Humble Beginnings
Jacen Wayland was a smuggler and occasional pirate (hey, who hasn't had a bad month or two?) who operated between the Corellian System and the Outer Rim, piloting a customized YT-1930 freighter named the MidKnight Son or a heavily-modified HLAF-500 called Stalker. He was known to work for the Rebel Alliance at times (i.e. when they could afford his services), but he could never manage to take either side seriously enough to throw his allegiance behind them completely. For weaponry, he was known to prefer a scoped SoroSuub SSK-7 heavy blaster pistol and a BlasTech DC-15S blaster carbine, modified for burst-firing. Though he displayed a certain amount of Force-sensitivity, he never received any training in its use, and was for the most part unaware of his gifts, knowing only that things sometimes had a way for falling into place for him, an advantage that seems to be disproportionately common among Corellian smugglers (see Han Solo). He could nearly always be found with one of the members of a group of freelance spacers he regularly finds employment with, including the Barabel bounty hunter, Miyr Kosshe, Wayland's Mon Cal co-pilot, Barak Quall, a young Tatooinian pilot named Taran Allantis, and a pair of minor, fugitive Jedi: the Alderaanian Jesko Balta and his pupil, Lara Haddon, a human born in the Rishi system. The MidKnight Son, like all of Wayland's ships, received many of its modifications at the hands of the outlaw mechanic, Syd N'aanzi, who became the official chief engineer for Wayland's Wilders.
"Respectable" Fleet Captain
Despite his unwillingness to commit to the Rebel Alliance during the Galactic Civil War, Wayland profited considerably by becoming one of the first "free traders" to sign a contract providing shipping for the fledgling New Republic. By getting in on the ground floor, he managed to negotiate a pair of ships into his asking price, arguing that they would enable him to perform his contracted services more efficiently. While the Mon Cal star cruiser that he had his eye on was deemed off-limits, he managed to add a Sentinel-class landing craft, called the Krak'jya, and a GR-75 transport named the Space Slug, in honor of the craft's less-than-blazing speed. Wayland continued to expand his fleet, and while he had primarily become a semi-respectable shipping captain, he still dabbled in privateer work, harassing Imperial Remnant ships whenever he could. By about 14 ABY, Jacen Wayland was commanding a small privateer fleet known as Wayland's Wilders (all the ships being extensively modified, as any self-respecting smuggler's would be), with a Consular-class space cruiser] (the Red Dwarf), a Corellian DP-20 gunship (the Overkill), the Fury, a Carrack-class light cruiser, the Drake, a Nebulon-B frigate, the Halberd, a Strike-class medium cruiser, and two CR90 corvettes (the Ringer and the Ranger), in addition to the other ships (the MidKnight Son, Stalker, Naiad, Krak'jya, and Space Slug) already in his service. The group's tactics were altered with the addition of the Angler, a Star Galleon modified to incorporate a gravity well projector that allowed the Wilders to wrench ships out of hyperspace and ambush them at will. The discovery of the Phoenix allowed the Angler to go back to being the Archer, rebuilt once again, this time as a troop carrier and escort frigate.
Ground Campaign
Since not everyone can be convinced to fight fairly (i.e. in space), Wayland developed a secondary force designed for operation on planetary raids or boarding attempts. Calling themselves Wayland's Warhammer, the organization consisted of 8,000 mercenary infantry, 2,000 hired marines, and a wide variety of support personnel and vehicles, designed to emphasize speed and technical superiority.
