Zayne Carrick, also known as the Jedi Exile, was a Human male and Jedi during the Mandalorian Wars. After he defeated the Masters who had framed him for the murder of his fellow Padawans, he chose to disobey the orders of the Jedi High Council and aid the Galactic Republic in its struggle against the invading Mandalorian Neo-Crusaders. Rising to the rank of Jedi Knight during the war, he served with distinction under the command of her fellow crusaders Revan and Malak, and was eventually commissioned as a General in the Republic Military. Zayne played a vital role in defeating the Mandalorians during the latter stages of the conflict, but at Malachor V, when the Mass Shadow Generator was activated, like the other Jedi, he was forced to either turn to the dark side of the Force or die. He chose to cut himself off from the Force, and because he had gone against the will of the Force, something considered impossible to do, he effectively spawned another being, which was raw power and dark side energy that became known as Darth Nihilus. Afterward, he was the only Jedi, out of all those who went to war, to avoid the call of the dark side and return to the Jedi Council to be judged for his crimes.
Exiled from the Jedi Order, Zayne wandered the periphery of known space for almost a decade before returning to the Republic at the height of the First Jedi Purge. Caught up in the schemes of various mysterious factions, he was swiftly drawn into the ongoing conflict and became instrumental in engineering the defeat of the Sith Triumvirate ruled by Darth Sion, Darth Nihilus, and Darth Traya. Able to sense the Force once more, the Exile emerged victorious from her campaign against the Sith Lords and immediately began a search for the long absent Jedi Revan. In the following years, he and the Jedi that he trained during his travels would prove essential to the process of rebuilding the Jedi Order in the wake of its near annihilation at the hands of the Sith, followed by a second Jedi Civil War started by Darth Haagen.
