Var'Unk was the last surviving member of the Whiphids following the Yuuzhan Vong War.

He had grown up with the knowledge that the best friend of his people was the Avenger of the Jedi. Since he had relocated them to a better home after the devastation brought to their home by the Vong. He was very joyful when he encountered the Avenger in person and was even more excited when he became his padawan.

It seemed that Var'Unk had surprising high Force-potential, as he was able to grasp tough concepts easily, and was it was so easily understood to him, that, he became bratty around other Padawans and Knights when his Master was not watching, and often teased them for their follies and mistakes. One time Nathan caught him doing so, and was scolded and punished.

One of the funniest things he had ever done was accidentally Ghosting into a Reaver Flagship. While Nathan and Astram were fighting on the ground, he was running from Reavers, when he accidentally and unintentionally Ghosted into the Reaver Flagship, and landed on a vulnerable piece of equipment, which he destroyed, and ghosted out of the ship and onto the planet's surface as the Flagship exploded.

Var'Unk was surprisingly close to obtaining Knighthood about the time of the Battle of Coruscant. He grabbed the late Zack's cloak from the Reavers, and wore it as his own. He replaced his old short lightsaber for a normal length one, and started to learn Soresu, as he thought that Defense would aid him considerably against Reavers.
