The Transition Period was the name given to the period following the end of the Clone Wars in 17 BBY. This period involved a revision of the Galactic Republic's constitution following the rather draconian amendments made by Palpatine during the war. Also during this period was the trial of the members of the Seperatist Council as well as the events orchestrated by Senator Triev Stokra and the consequences of these.

Even though the Transition Period began proper with the death of Palpatine, its origins occured slightly before that event due to transmissions of Palpatine in communication with General Grievous discovered by C-3PO and R2-D2 in their investigation of Grievous' ship the Invisible Hand which revealed the Chancellor as the Sith Lord Darth Sidious. The droids gave this information to Padmé Naberrie who had them transmit this to Senator Bail Organa of Alderaan [1]. Naberrie later died in the confrontation with Sidious, yet Organa exposed Palpatine's treachery to the Senate with the help of Senators Mon Mothma of Chandrilla and Danta Pela of Naboo[2].

Following the precepts of the constitution, Speaker of the Senate Mas Amedda quickly succeeded Palpatine with the approval of the Senate and quickly began a program of reform, undoing many of Palpatine's stringent poliices. A much more decentralised form of government was also beginning to form. [3]
This also involved a dramatic revision of the constitution, a process which was dragged on rather more than necessary due to the actions of Senator Stokra of the Corporate Sector who headed the Varicean Comittee. [4] Eventually, in 14 BBY, stokra was made to back down by the Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker, Amedda stepped down as Chancellor and new elections were called. [5]
[edit] The Trial of Nute Gunray

Nute Gunray was the last of the Seperatist Council to be captured and tried for war crimes. Skywalker located him on Etti IV and later testified at the trial. [6] However, this was terminated by his sudden murder by former Jedi Shinai Stel-Ardak, who had been hired by Stokra to make it appear a Jedi had done the deed. [7] Skywalker failed to apprhend Stel-Ardak, reporting him as dead yet he was able to use the information he had gathered as leverage to threaten Stokra.[8]

Following Stokra's withdrawl of opposition to the new constitution, Amedda stepped aside as he had promised to do [9] and an election was called for a new Supreme Chancellor. Not surprisingly, Stokra was nominated but Senator Perenine or Avingnon put forward Organa's name, much to the Alderaanian's surprise. Organa won the election by a very close margin and the transition period drew to a close.[10]
[edit] Aftermath
The transition period was to have dramatic repucussions for the galaxy that were unexpected. Many of the events were to have consequences later that led to the Galactic Civil War between the Republic and the Varicean Imperium.
