  • Hey there people! Wikia has introduced a new feature called "Discussions". You can read about it here and here. Long story short, it'll replace the current forums with a new way for users to have forum-like discussions. I would highly encourage you all to check out Wookieepedia's use of the feature here.

I think this could be great for Star Wars Fanon. It's not like we use forums that much, but this could be an easier way for users to collaborate on things. (And yes, I've actually seen users collaborating on things lately.) Beyond that it could also be used for community discussions like this!

I'd love to hear thoughts on this from anyone and everyone. This feature is going to come eventually, but we have a chance to implement it now and offer feedback on how the system could be improved. I think this is a great opportunity for us to get in on the ground floor. How do you all feel about implementing it?

    • I support this initiative. The feature is intuitive and user-friendly. 10/10 would implement again.

    • I, the great and noble Lord Sharky of the Bytesz, Warden of the Game of Thrones Fanon Wiki and professional idiot, approve of this.

    • This looks like an interesting feature! I personally do not use the forums much, I would probably be using discussions a lot if Star Wars Fanon were to enable this. I approve!

I am enthusiastically indifferent about this proposal, for I haven't used the forums in years and therefore doubt I would suddenly pick this up. So let the people have what they want.

    • I am also indifferent to it.

    • A third vote from the neutral planet. However, if it's coming either way, and it's merely a question of sooner or later, it might be to our advantage to kneel now rather than to be forced to our knees later.

    • Forums is garbage from an engineering perspective. The sooner it's replaced with a purpose-built product, the better.

    • From the bits that I read, it seems like Discussions (more interactive and collaborative) would function differently and for a different purpose than Forums currently do (more of a database and archive for questions).  Not sure how this'll be implemented. I kinda like the Forums to refer back to, rather than a collaboration tool.  Just a personal opinion.

    • TBH I think for stuff like CT old wiki page forums have always been inherently superior to this incarnation. Look at any old CT and you can instantly survey what the question was, who answered what, how many people supported, how many opposed etc., as opposed to this thread-based solution where you have to scroll down half a page and manually count the amount of votes.

I think it'd be fitting to just use wiki page forums for that, and use Discussions for... well, discussions.

    • It seems like the general consensus here ranges from relative apathy through tentative support to pretty strong agreement. Given that, I'm going to send in the request for implementation. I have no idea how long it will take Staff to turn the feature on, but I'll make sure everyone is aware once it has been activated. (I assume Staff will leave some wiki-wide notification or alert, but that's purely speculative on my part.)

I know Staff is still looking for feedback on the feature, so if/when you use Discussions, please let them know what you like, what you feel is missing, etc. I know it can be tempting to focus just on the negative (and I'm not saying you shouldn't tell them what you dislike or feel is lacking) but don't forget that emphasizing what you like lets them know that they should keep focused on improving those areas as well. Positive feedback lets them know what they're doing right.

Enough preaching from me. Smile. Let's have some great Discussions!

    • So, should CT live in Discussions or the wiki-style forums afterwards?

        Loading editor
    • I don't have a strong preference. We can try using Discussions for them, and if that doesn't work out, we can fall back on the older wiki-style.

    • Discussions is now live here!
