"You cannot prevent what you did not see coming. You can only do what you think is right at each moment you live it. We can plan, hope and dread the future. What we cannot do is know it."
Qui-Gon Jinn[src]

The Phantom Menace (AU) is the first novel in the Jedi Padmé Trilogy and was the first serious Star Wars story written by Katana Geldar. The story is a re-imagining of the film of the same name, and there are many differences and similarities between the two.

[edit] Behind the scenes

  • Due to the fact that this was Katana Geldar's first serious Star Wars story, there are a lot of parallels with the canon film that she was unable to eliminate, such as the podrace and the death of Qui-Gon Jinn.
  • TPM (AU) was going to be more original, with Anakin Skywalker as one of the Naboo refugees that is discovered by Obi-Wan Kenobi. Padmé was going to be trained by Obi-Wan and Anakin by Qui-Gon, but it would not have worked out.
  • The podrace was the last scene to be written, as Katana Geldar says she found it "boring". Attack of the Clones (AU) had been started before TPM (AU) had been finished.
  • The goff birds Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi ride into Theed were thought to resemble giant magpies, this was before pictures of them were revealed in later books. The sequence is reminiscent of Lord of the Rings.

[edit] Dislaimer
