The Chosen Apprentice is the first novel in the Varicean Saga and continues the story from where the Jedi Padmé Trilogy left off. The novel is very much a departure from the Jedi Padmé Trilogy and sets up quite a number of plot details and characters for it's sequel Prelude of Fear. This story depicts the Transition Period, which was a time of much change from the Galactic Republic still recovering form the devistation of the Clone Wars which finished three years before.

Three years after the conclusion of the Clone Wars the Jedi Order and the Republic have moved on, yet Anakin Skywalker has not. While he still struggles to come to terms with Padmé’s death, the relative peace caused by the end of the war looks to dissolve in petty bickering over the continued role of the Jedi.
