Syral Saganu was a female Chiss officer of the Confederacy of Independent Systems navy and later of the Alliance to Restore the Republic. Hailing from a family of Chiss exiles in the Outer Rim Territories, Saganu was trained in different styles of combat in her youth, becoming a skilled combatant. However, she was later captured and forced into serving a group of pirates, becoming a member of their crew. The event she witnessed and took part in horrified Saganu, and scarred her for life. During a raid against a Trade Federation "freighter", she was captured, along with the rest of the pirates. The Chiss woman got her revenge by giving away all of the information she knew on the pirates to the Federation, who had the pirates executed. However, afterwards, Saganu was pressed into service in the Confederate Navy. Becoming a gunnery officer, the Chiss was given the rank of lieutenant.

Early life[]
Saganu was a female Chiss who was born into a family of exiles from the Chiss Ascendancy, on an unnamed planet located at the edge of the Outer Rim Territories. Due to the hardship of their situation, Saganu was taught by her parents in using various weapons, melee and ranged, as well as styles of unarmed combat. They came in useful when the Chiss woman got herself in trouble with gangs or the local authorities. Eventually, after saving up enought credits, she purchased a passage off of her home planet aboard an armed freighter. However, as Saganu later found out, the ship was actually owned by a group of pirates, not merchants that they claimed to be. She was pressed into serving them (in more than one way), becoming a gunner aboard their freighter and helping them attack ships and pillage communities. The Chiss woman began horrified with what she saw while with the pirates, and the events scarred her for life. At the same time, while with the pirate crew, Saganu learned skills in the operation of starships. But she nonetheless hated them for holding her captive, and looked for a possible way out of the situation.
But around 23 BBY, in a failed raid on a Lucrehulk-class battleship, Saganu was captured by the Trade Federation. Since she liked her new captors more than her old ones, the Chiss gave away all of the information she knew on the pirates, as well as information on the acts they committed. The thankful Trade Federation let her go free, while executing the rest of the pirates. But the Trad Federation, looking for personnel to serve in the recently formed Confederate Navy, instead decided to press Saganu into service with the Confederacy of Independent Systems. Not having a choice or any other options, the Chiss decided to accept it, and became a gunnery officer in the navy, holding the rank of lieutenant.
