Supreme Chancellor (JPT)
The Star Wars wiki of fan invention.
Supreme Chancellor, usually simply known as Chancellor and also known as Chancellor of the Republic, Grand Chancellor or President of the Senate, was the title of the Head of State and Government as well as Senate President and Senate Chair of the Galactic Republic. The Chancellor was properly addressed "Your Excellency".
[edit] Appointment
The Chancellor was elected by and from senators and representatives of the Galactic Senate and could serve two four-year terms. The Chancellor could be removed from office at any time by the Senate with a Vote of No Confidence
[edit] Power and functions
The Chancellor served mainly as an officiator of parliamentary procedure and the first among equals in the Senate. However, it had the authority to call an Extraordinary Session of the Senate, and could invoke "Chancellor's prerogative" in circumventing minor aspects of the Senate's parliamentary procedure. When in the Main Chamber, the Chancellor usually wore a Veda cloth robe. The Chancellor was elected from among the Senators who made up the Galactic Senate and served a term of office that lasted for four standard years. A Chancellor could legally serve only two consecutive four-year terms before he or she had to step down due to term limits. There were exception to this rule, one was Palpatine who served an additional seven years to his term following the Secession Crisis in 24 BBY due to emergency powers given to him by the Senate at his own manipulation. Another was his immediate successor, Mas Amedda, who came to office after Palpatine's death under the provisions of the constitution. Amedda served only three years during the Transition Period and stepped down in favor of new elections.
