The Collective Administration: How may we assist you today?

The Administrators, also known as System Operators (SyOps) and formerly known as The Cabal, are users who have been given extended technical privileges on Star Wars Fanon. Administrators have been elected by the community because they are trusted, seen as ready and able, and have proven themselves to be the best choice in their respective elections. Despite having these special administrative editing tools, Administrators are no different than any other user. They have no authority to assert over members, nor is their influence meant to be greater than anyone else’s. As of August 2008, there an indefinite election being held.

Administrators are meant to provide assistance to newcomers and amateur writers, just as any other member can. Administrators are able to help show their skills by guiding new users on how to format, properly write, and how to categorize their articles. Administrators also help with technical difficulties, such as creating templates and editing mark up codes. Administrators have the advantage to delete unwanted or unused articles, templates, categories and images. The most important task of all, however, is to watch over the recent changes list for vandalism and to take action against vandals appropriately.

Another duty that the Administrators must handle is arguments amongst the members and writers of Star Wars Fanon. If a user has a dispute with another user, they must settle it in a civil manner. However, if an Administrator must intervene, it is usually because a personal attack or perhaps vandalism has occurred, in which the Administrator must take action. Administrators are elected to make the Wiki a fun, friendly and quality place for everyone. They are elected through requests for adminship.

[edit] Responsibilities

[edit] Page protection

Administrators have a duty to protect pages when necessary. However, some pages have already been protected by default due to the fact that they are main targets for vandals and vandalism in general. The main page, for example, is one of those pages that has been protected to prevent vandalism, so that only administrators can change the content within it. MediaWiki pages, however, have automatically been protected so only administrators can edit those pages, which format the style of all of Star Wars Fanon.

During a dispute, it might be necessary for an administrator to protect a page. For example, if a user's page is a target for vandalism, and is continually vandalized, then an administrator can temporarily protect the user's page to prevent further vandalism. Or, if there is a heated debate going on in a forum, which results in the exchange of personal attacks, the administrator must step in and protect the page to prevent further editing so the administrator can have time to punish rule breakers appropriately.

Images, like pages, can be protected for the same reasons. If a user requests for a page to be protected, it might not be. It's up to the administrator to decide when or not to protect a page, depending on the circumstance.

[edit] Deletion/restoration

Administrators also have the ability to delete articles, images, user pages, templates, and categories. According to consensus reached by the community, administrators now have the right of way to delete articles that are junk, such as most joke articles, or articles that contain barely or no information at all. It's completely up to the administrator whether or not to delete an article. There is no tolerance for vandal articles, which would immediately be deleted and redirected to prevent recreation.

Administrators can also undelete items they have deleted in the past. If an article was accidentally deleted, it should be restored by the administrators, but if a template that was inappropriate was deleted, it would not be brought back. Administrators and users can agree to bringing an article or template back, but only if it is appropriate for the community and serves a purpose. However, pure canon articles will instantly be deleted and they will not be undeleted unless the article's creator adds fanon to it.

[edit] Block/unblock

Like all other administrative privileges, the Administrators have the say in who gets banned and for how long, as long as they have broken a rule that is worthy of a punishment. Generally, an administrator would not ban a user unfairly. However, if a user objects to his ban, their talk page is still open for them to edit it, which is where they can complain. Vandals usually will get banned infinitely, but it also depends on the severity of the vandalism.

Regular users can be banned too however. Users who break the rules, such as making personal attacks or stealing other's fanon can be punished for defiance and for being uncivilized. Uploading obscene images or posting obscene language could also obtain users a ban. It will usually depend on the situation, but it is ultimately up to the administrator to decide how long a user is to be banned.

[edit] MediaWiki namespace

Administrators also have the privilege of updating and modifying the MediaWiki pages as they see fit. MediaWiki pages determine what appearance Star Wars Fanon will take on, as well as what text will appear in certain special pages and other notification pages. Administrators can also use the MediaWiki namespace pages to notify users, all at once, of some announcement or to display news on certain pages. The MediaWiki pages are usually not edited much, however, they do give Star Wars Fanon a lot of things to improve its general look.
