This reboot was directed by Christopher Nolan and stars James McAvoy, Dane DeHaan and Brad Dourif among others. It is a sequel to Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace and Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones.

Plot[]

The Clone Wars have been raging for three years. In this time, the droid general, Grievous (Keith David), has emerged and in a bold move, his forces have invaded the capital of the Republica Galactica, Coruscant, and kidnapped Supreme Chancellor Palpatine (Brad Dourif).

Obi-Wan Kenobi (James McAvoy) and his apprentice, Anakin Skywalker (Dane DeHaan), are assigned to rescue the Chancellor from the General's flagship, the Invisible Hand. Both on Coruscant and in the sky, numerous Jedi and clone troopers lead the assault against the droid army.

After infiltrating the ship, Obi-Wan and Anakin must traverse a series of elevators under attack from buzz droids in order to gain access to the chamber where the Chancellor is being held. Before they can free him, however, Count Dooku (Ben Kingsley) make his presence known. The trio duel for the first time in three years. During the fight, Obi-Wan is knocked out and Dooku taps into Anakin's anger, causing it to overwhelm him. Anakin viciously attacks Dooku, managing to slash at his throat, silencing him. With Dooku at his mercy, Anakin holds his lightsaber to his neck. Suddenly, to Dooku's horror, Palpatine encourages Anakin to finish Dooku. Anakin is torn, but Palpatine also seems to tap into Anakin's rage, enticing the young Jedi to behead the Sith Lord. He then frees Palpatine and carries Obi-Wan to safety.

In an adjacent corridor, the group find themselves surrounded by droids. They are escorted to the ship's bridge, where General Grievous is holding Shaak Ti (Alice Braga) hostage. The terrified Jedi sadly tells Obi-Wan that she has failed, when suddenly Grievous stabs her through the heart with her own lightsaber.

Obi-Wan and Anakin manage to retrieve their lightsabers and a battle breaks out on the bridge. In the chaos, Grievous shatters a window and leaps out, managing to escape by crawling to the escape pods and getting inside. The Guarlara, a large Republic ship, opens fire on the Invisible Hand, sending it into a steep decline. The ship's captain, Lushros Dofine, is subsequently sucked out. Anakin manages to steer the ship into a crash landing, saving himself, Obi-Wan and Palpatine.

Returning to Coruscant, Anakin and Obi-Wan are welcomed as heroes. Anakin is reunited with his secret wife, Padme Naberrie (Anne Hathaway), and they share a kiss in the shadows. Anakin notices that Padme seems worried, and that something isn't right. Padme explains that she is pregnant, and Anakin appears to be overjoyed.

That night, however, Anakin begins to suffer from nightmares and hallucinations, in which he sees Padme dying in childbirth. Anakin wakes up and walks out onto the balcony, and Padme follows, where he explains his dreams, and vows not to let them come true,

Meanwhile, the Jedi Council assign Anakin to be Palpatine's personal bodyguard. Yoda (Andy Serkis) announces that he is going to visit Kashyyk, the home world of his friends, the Wookies, which has come under siege from the Confederacy. Obi-Wan has received intel that General Grievous and the Seperatist Council have retreated to Utapau, and decides to head there.

On Coruscant, Anakin and Palpatine begin to grow closer. Palpatine confides in Anakin that he does not trust the Jedi Council, and Anakin agrees that he also has doubts about their intentions, but assures Palpatine that they can be trusted.

Before Obi-Wan leaves for Utapua, he informs Anakin that the Jedi Council want him to report on all of the Chancellor's dealings, effectively spying on him and thus explaining why Anakin was selected to protect Palpatine. Anakin is disgusted and torn between his loyalty to the Chancellor and to the Council.

Palpatine takes Anakin to visit the Galaxies Opera House, where Palpatine tells him about the Tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise. He was once a powerful Muun Sith Lord, who learn the secrets of life and death. The only person to which he confided this information was his apprentice. His apprentice, however, betrayed his master and murdered Darth Plagueis. Anakin then warns Palpatine that the Council sent him to spy on him.

Meanwhile, Obi-Wan arrives on Utapau and is greeted by Tion Medon (Doug Jones), ruler of Pau City, who was the one who contacted Obi-Wan and informed him of Grievous' presence. Obi-Wan locates Grievous on the tenth level, just after hearing from Grievous that he had sent the Seperatists to another planet, but did find out which. Obi-Wan and Grievous engage in a bitter duel, during which all seems lost for Obi-Wan. Suddenly, Commander Cody (Jason Isaacs) and a battalion of clones lay siege to Pau City and chases Grievous away, enticing Obi-Wan to give chase. Grievous flees to a landing platform where his ship is located, hoping to escape the planet. During the chase,Obi-Wan's lightsaber falls into the pit. On the platform, Grievous mercilessly beats Obi-Wan and throws him over the edge. As Grievous approaches him, Obi-Wan uses the Force to grab a lightsaber off of Grievous' belt and then uses it to impale him. Grievous' body then falls into the sinkhole.

Back on Coruscant, Anakin further quizzes Palpatine on the Dark Side of the Force, and the secrets Darth Plagueis uncovered. Palpatine reveals the name of the apprentice was one Darth Sidious. Palpatine tries to further secude Anakin to the Dark Side, reminding Anakin of his fear of Padme's death. Palpatine then reveals that he is Darth Sidious. Anakin, outraged by the presence of a Sith Lord in the Senate, rushes to inform Mace Windu.

Anakin finds Windu (Michael Jai White) on a landing platform and tells him that he wishes to discuss Palpatine. Windu informs Anakin of Grievous' defeat, and as such, the Chancellor should be prepared to give up his emergency powers. Anakin remarks that he won't be willing to; he is a Sith Lord. A shocked Windu tells Anakin not to worry, and gathers his fellow Jedi Agen Kolar, Saesee Tiin and Kit Fisto to arrest the Chancellor.

While Anakin sits alone in the empty council chamber, Windu and the other Jedi march into Palpatine's office. Suddenly, Palpatine draws a lightsaber and attacks the Jedi, quickly slaying both Kolar and Tiin. A duel ensues, during which Kit Fisto is beheaded. Anakin, having been contemplating his decision, finally runs from the council chamber and heads for Palpatine's office.

Anakin arrives just in time to witness Windu kicking Palpatine to the floor and disarming him. Windu warns Anakin that Palpatine is to dangerous to be let live, and must be struck down immediately. Palpatine unleashes the power of the Dark Side with Force Lightning, but Windu uses his lightsaber to deflect it back at Palpatine, badly scarring his face. As Windu prepares to deliver the final blow, Anakin leaps to Palpatine's defence and swings his own lightsaber, cutting Windu's hand off. As such, he is left defenceless against Palpatine's force lightning, and Windu is blasted out of the window to his death.

Distraught by his own actions, Anakin breaks down. The viciously scarred Palpatine stands and makes Anakin an offer; in return for his apprenticeship, Palpatine will teach Anakin how to save Padme. Anakin then pledges himself to the Dark Side, and Palpatine declares that he shall henceforth be known as Darth Vader.

Palpatine explains to Anakin that the Jedi have been conspiring to rebel and take over the Republica Galactica, so he sends him with a legion of clone troopers to assault the Jedi Temple and wipe out all who are within. Then, he reveals to Anakin the location of the Confederacy leaders; the volcanic planet of Mustafar. Once he is done in the Jedi Temple, he is to kill the remaining Seperatists.

Anakin and the clones march to the Jedi Temple and lay siege to it. The battle soon becomes a massacre, as Anakin slaughters Jedi after Jedi. Amongst those killed are Cin Drallig and his apprentice, Serra Keto, as well as his friend Olana Chion and her apprentice Whie Malreaux. In the early hours of the morning as the sun comes up, Anakin leaves the Temple and makes his way to his own ship, taking one final look back on the burning Temple.

Meanwhile, Palpatine issues "Order 66," which activates something hidden deep within the clone trooper design code. They follow the order without hesitation or question; their mission is to kill every single Jedi, now deemed enemies of the Republic. Similar to the bloodbath on Coruscant, mass genocide sweeps throughout the Galaxy as the Great Jedi Purge begins.

On Utapau, Obi-Wan, now armed with a new lightsaber, ascends the sinkhole as the battle for Pau City begins to draw to a close. Just then, Clone Commander Cody receives a message from Palpatine informing him that it is time to execute Order 66. He focuses fire from a large tank on Obi-Wan's location, resulting in an explosion which sends Obi-Wan into the sinkhole. During his free fall, Obi-Wan manages to briefly become one with the Force, saving his life when he lands in the water. Obi-Wan realises that is no longer safe in Pau City, as it is crawling with both battle droids and clone troopers.

Meanwhile, Ki-Adi Mundi (Ron Perlman) is forcing Confederacy forces back across a bridge on Mygeeto, which could prove a vital victory on the planet. Suddenly, Clone Commander Bacara (Jason Isaacs) and his men walk up behind him. Sensing something is wrong, the Jedi Master turns around and manages to deflect their fire with his ligthsaber before he is shot in the chest. His last act is throw his lightsaber into the ground, igniting a fuel line which causes the bridge to collapse just before he falls into the ravine below.

On Cato Nemoidia, Plo Koon (Eric Bana) and Captain Jag are driving back Confederacy forces. They run a bombing raid on a vital Confederacy control point, crippling their forces. As they fly triumphantly through the skies, Bacara is interrupted by Palpatine's message, and he opens fire. Plo Koon's ship is badly damaged and put into a dive, eventually crashing into a Republic base and engulfing it in a fireball.

On Saleucami, Stass Allie and Commander Neyo (Jason Isaacs) are flying on speeders through the swamp lands, targeting any Confederacy resistance they encounter. Just as the order comes in, Allie spots a Confederacy encampment up ahead, and speeds up. As she opens fire on the camp, Neyo in turn opens fire on her, causing her speeder to crash, with Allie perishing in the collision.

On Felucia, Aayla Secura arrives in just in time to save Commander Bly from an Acklay. A wave of clone troopers pour into the marshes, exterminating much resistance. After a brief and light hearted talk with Bly, Secura turns to lead her men into battle. As she steps forward, Bly orders his squad to shoot her. Secura survives, but is badly injured. Bly sadly executes his old friend by shooting her through the head.

On Kashyyk, Luminara Unduli is giving a speech to her men when Commander Gree has her shot. As the same time, on Felucia, Unduli's apprentice, Bariss Offee, tries to escape from the carnage by running through a mine field with Force Speed, being chased by Lieutenant Galle. An AT-TE opened fire and destroyed the mine field, taing the lives of both Offee and Galle.

Yoda, also stationed on Kashyyk, feels the horror through the Force and collapses. As he is helped back to his feet by his Wookie friends, Gree arrives behind them. The Wookies think nothing of it and step aside to allow him to speak with Yoda, accidentally allowing him a clear shot. Suddenly, Yoda jumps into the air and uses his lightsaber to decapitate Gree.

On Coruscant, Alderaan Senator Bail Organa (Hugo Weaving) watches as the Temple burns and decides to approach it. Arriving on an upper landing platform, Organa is greeted by Commander Appo, who tells him to turn his back. Organa spies the troops walking with a cuffed Jedi Padawan, Zett Jukassa, and realises that he is to be executed. Jukassa manages to retrieve his lightsaber and free himself, slashing at several of the troopers. Organa jumps into his speeder and watches Appo ruthlessly shoot Jukassa. Organa retrieves a blaster from his speeder and shoots Appo dead in retaliation.

In Pau City, Commander Cody receives information that Obi-Wan was sighted alive in the lower levels, and sets off after him. Meanwhile, Obi-Wan locates Tion Medon, who agrees to try and help Obi-Wan. As they arrive at the landing platform where Obi-Wan's ship is located, the clones arrive and Medon forces Obi-Wan to hide. Cody apprehends Medon and correctly deduces that Obi-Wan is presented, knowing the way he thinks and moves. In order to coax Obi-Wan out, Cody shoots Medon in the face, killing him. Obi-Wan leaps out of his hiding place and attacks the clone squadron, felling most of them. Obi-Wan and Cody both fall onto a large clone transport passing below them, losing both of their weapons in the struggle. Obi-Wan manages to press his hilt to Cody's chin, but Cody continues to grab for his weapon while Obi-Wan begs him not to. Cody manages to get a hold of it and turns it towards Obi-Wan's face, leaving the Jedi Master without much choice. Obi-Wan ignites his lightsaber through his old friend's head, killing him. Obi-Wan howls with grief and pain, before leaping from the transport onto the landing platform and escaping.

Eventually both Yoda, (with the help of Tarfull and Chewbacca (Doug Jones)) who escaped Kashyyk, and Obi-Wan are picked up by Senator Organa in his ship, the Sundered Heart. They learn that the beacon in the Jedi Temple is broadcasting a message telling all Jedi that the war is over, and they should gather at the Temple. Yoda deduces that is a trap and that there will be clones waiting to kill the Jedi. He and Obi-Wan decide that they must gain access to the Temple and shut the beacon down. Organa volunteers to join them, but is suddenly summoned to an emergency session in the Senate, held by Palpatine. He agrees to attend and find out what is happening.

Organa arrives and joins Padme, who is watching Palpatine's adress in shock. Palpatine, wearing a hood to conceal his scars, explains that the Jedi attempted to assassinate him and overthrow the Republica Galactica. Palpatine, however, managed to foil the rebellion ad the Jedi have been outlawed. In order to ensure the stability of the Republica Galactica, Palpatine intends to reorganize it into the First Galactic Empire. Palpatine then declares himself Emperor.

Anakin, meanwhile, arrives on Mustafar and is greeted on the landing platform by a group of Neimoidian aides. Palpatine had already contacted the Confederacy leaders and informed them that they have won the war, and his apprentice will be along shortly to take care of them. The aides escort Anakin to the central control chamber, when he then seals the doors, trapping the helpless leaders inside. As Anakin ignites his lightsaber, the leaders realise that Palpatine has betrayed them. Anakin begins to slaughter the Seperatist Council by first striking down their aides. He then slays San Hill, Shu Mai, Passel Argente, Po Nudo, Poggle the Lesser, Wat Tambor, Rune Haako and finally Nute Gunray (Ian Holm).

Yoda and Obi-Wan arrive in the destroyed Temple. They witness a young Jedi walking through the Temple and attempt to get her attention, when suddenly she is surrounded by clones and executed. The duo make their way to the Temple beacon, which Obi-Wan recalibrates so as to send a message informing all Jedi of what is happening, and recommends that they try to escape. Suddenly, they are attacked by Commander Fox and his men. Yoda kills Fox by throwing his lightsaber through his neck.

Yoda uncovers a recording taken from a secret device implanted in Palpatine's office, which reveals Anakin is now Palpatine's apprentice. Obi-Wan is horrified, but Yoda tells him that they now have no choice but to destroy the Sith, including Vader. As Yoda and Obi-Wan exit the Temple, they are confronted by Commander Faie. Another brief scuffle ensues, but Obi-Wan kills Faie by breaking neck.

While Yoda heads for the Senate to confront Palpatine, Obi-Wan arrives at Padme's apartment to inform her of Anakin's defection the Dark Side. Padme at refuses to believe it, while Obi-Wan tells her that he is on Mustafar. Obi-Wan then correctly deduces that she is pregnant with Anakin's child, and leaves.

Padme and her old friend and bodyguard Captain Panaka (Idris Elba) fly take her star skiff to leave Coruscant and head to Mustafar to find Anakin. Obi-Wan sneaks on board, unbeknownst to them.

The ship touches down on Mustafar, where Anakin is standing on the landing platform. He greets Padme warmly and silently acknowledges Panaka. As Anaki explains to Padme that he has ensured their future, she realizes that Obi-Wan was right and Anakin is now a Sith Lord. Padme reacts with horror to the news that Anakin slaughtered Younglings in the Temple. Anakin, angered and thinking that she had taken Obi-Wan's side and betray him, grabs her by the arm. Panaka reacts rashly and draws his blaster, but Anakin holds him in place with the Force. Despite Padme's pleas, Anakin tells Panaka that he always thought he was weak and breaks his neck with the Force. Suddenly, Obi-Wan emerges from the ship. Anakin finally snaps and blindly begins to choke Padme with the Force, releasing her just before he can kill her. However, she collapses to the ground, unconscious.

Anakin and Obi-Wan have a bitter argument over the situation, until Obi-Wan finally sees that Anakin cannot be redeemed, and draws his lightsaber. Anakin then draws his and leaps into the air, initiating a final showdown.

Meanwhile on Coruscant, Yoda finds Palpatine beneath the Senate. Palpatine mocks Yoda and states that while he may have survived Order 66, he will now die at his own hands. The two engage in a vicious lightsaber duel, during which they climb onto the Chancellor's podium and they are taken up into the Senate Chamber. Both lose their weapons, but Palpatine uses the Force to throw Senate pods at Yoda. Eventually, Yoda falls to the floor on the chamber to his seeming death, while Palpatine laughs and proclaims his victory. Afterwards, however, a sweep by clone troopers turn up no body, and Palpatine deduces that Yoda survived. Outside of the Senate, Yoda is rescued by Organa.

During Anakin and Obi-Wan's duel, the control panel in the council chamber is damaged and the bunker's shields are deactivated. allowing the volcanic nature of the planet to begin destroying it. Their duel takes them across the facility, climaxing when they both jump onto a moving platform which carries them down a river. Obi-Wan leaps off onto a nearby bank and begs Anakin not to follow. Anakin jumps anyway, but Obi-Wan slices off Anakin's left arm and both legs. Anakin's body slides down the bank and catches fire from the lava. Obi-Wan sadly picks up Anakin's lightsaber and walks away, leaving Anakin to be immolated.

Obi-Wan brings Padme's body back onto her ship and flies to the isolated asteroid Polis Massa to meet Organa and Yoda. Palpatine senses that Anakin is in danger and takes a squad of clones led by Commander Thire to Mustafar, where they rescue Anakin. They return to Coruscant, where Anakin is rebuilt as a cyborg. His missing limbs and damaged lungs are replaced with mechanical variants. A tightly sealed mask is placed over his face to keep his breathing functional. When the procedure is done, nothing of the original Anakin is left.

On Polis Massa, the medical droids fight to save Padme's life and reveal that she is pregnant. Padme gives birth to a baby boy just before she dies, her final words being "Luke." The group is left to decide what to do with the child.

Yoda meditates alone, and is contacted by Qui-Gon Jinn (Sean Bean). Qui-Gon reveals to Yoda that he has found a way to maintain conciousness after death by becoming one with the Force. Obi-Wan then enters with Organa and they reveal their plan to Yoda. Obi-Wan will take Luke to the Lars family on Tattooine so that they can watch over him, and the Empire will not find him. Obi-Wan will also hide out on Tattooine, watching over Luke from afar. Yoda agrees and reveals his decision to flee to Dagobah to live the rest of his life peacefully.

Anakin, through his new suit, questions Palpatine on Padme, and the Emperor takes sadistic delight in telling his apprentice that he killed her. Anakin howls in pain and destroys the medical lab where he was rebuilt, before competely resigning himself to the Dark Side. Anakin Skywalker is no more; now, there is only Darth Vader.

Yoda and Obi-Wan bid each other farewell and part ways, but not before Yoda informs him of what he has learned from Qui-Gon. The two agree to use their time in exile to learn what Qui-Gon has mastered in order to become one with the Force upon death. Yoda flies to Dagobah, while Obi-Wan parts ways with Organa and brings Luke with him as he flies to Tattooine.

On Naboo, a funeral procession is held in the streets for Padme. Amongst those present are her Gungan allies, Jar Jar Binks and Boss Nass, as well as her successor Corde Apailana and Captain Panaka's successor, Gregar Typho.

Palpatine and Vader arrive on the bridge on a ship overseeing the construction of a large, planet sized superweapon based on Confederacy schematics. Palpatine then activates something else hidden within the clone design code, which effectively wipes all of the clones out, destroying one of the last remnants of the old Republica Galactica. Palpatine orders Governor Wilhuff Tarkin (Gary Oldman) to rename the Clone Troopers to Stormtroopers and using them for the Galactic Army.

In the final scene, Obi-Wan arrives on Tattooine and brings the infant Luke to the Lars family, where he is taken in by his uncle Owen (Alfred Molina) and aunt Beru (Jamie Lee Curtis). As Obi-Wan leaves, the Lars sit with Luke and watch Tattoine's twin suns rise.
