New Republic era

The Skirmish on Ryloth was a three-sided battle in the Dark Order War.

Prelude[]

Over a decade after the failure of the Dark Trooper Project, a spy working for the Zann Consortium, under orders from the criminal empire's leader, infiltrated the Imperial Remnant and managed to gather several details on the project, which was designed for construction of advanced Imperial battle droids. The most important information gathered was several technical characteristics of the Assault cannon, which was capable of punching through heavy armor in a single blast. Assault cannons were the primary weapon of the Dark troopers, and were demonstrated as highly effective against foot soldiers, vehicles, and even entire buildings in engagements such as the Battle of Talay.

On the Zann Consortium's capital world of Ryloth, an expensive facility was ordered by Tyber Zann to be constructed for the purpose of producing assault cannons for the Consortium, which would be modified for ease of use as well as other possible additions. Although progress was slow, several prototypes were completed in the year 14 ABY shortly after the beginning of the Dark Order War.

Not long after the Kuat Disaster, Imperial spies reporting to Dark Jedi Jaden Korr pinpointed the location of the production facility. Fearing the damage that the Consortium could inflict if their project was ever completed, Jaden ordered a covert strike force to be immediately deployed to put the base out of commission. Unknown to Jaden, however, the New Republic had simultaneously discovered the weapons facility as well. Both sides covertly deployed a team of reservists to attack the base.

Infiltration[]

The Weapons Research Facility had two main entrances, one on the east side and the other on the south, both of which were accessed via a canyon. The canyons were monitored by hourly patrols. The main Imperial attack force of 21 Sandtroopers commanded by Darth Imperious and 2 other Shadowtroopers landed in the east canyon and approached the base. The Republic commandos landed in and took the southern canyon. Due to Consortium sensor jammers, both sides were unaware of each others' presence.

While en route, the Republic troops were spotted by Zann Consortium scouts, who reported the intruders back to their superiors. In preparation for the battle, additional men were posted at the southern entrance and the defensive turrets were activated. Meanwhile, Storm commando team Epsilon were deployed from a Lambda-class T-4a shuttle to the north. They were instructed to find a way to enter the the base undetected, which meant both of the main entrances were not applicable. After scanning the northern wall, Epsilon squad discovered a maintenance shaft, which they used to infiltrate the compound.

New Republic ground forces reached the southern entrance and engaged the mercenary troops and turrets. Although the Consortium men held their ground, they were eventually overran due to the superior training of the attackers. After the turrets were destroyed, the Republic troops blew the door down and charged through. Consortium snipers were posted in the hallways and inflicted moderate casualties, but were mostly outmatched by the superior training of the Republic troops, who secured a control room. Using a terminal inside the room, they pinpointed the location of three Main Power Generators, which stored and regulated energy throughout the entire facility. If destroyed, the loss of power and collateral damage would wreck the complex. They then left the room and headed toward the generators, which were heavily guarded in the western section of the base.

Final Assault[]

As the Republic troops moved further into the base, defenders at the east entrance were forced to abandon their position to help slow the attackers' advance. Shortly after, the Imperial troops, led by the Dark Jedi, were able to break through the defenses and penetrate the east door with no casualties and swept through the base, eliminating surprised guards. Meanwhile, Epsilon Squad managed to hack into one of the base's terminals, which they used to find the location of the Power Generators. They relayed this information to the rest of the Imperial troops, all of whom rendezvoused in a hallway near the center of the base and converged on the Generators immediately as the Republic soldiers reached them.

Having taken heavy losses, the Consortium personnel deployed a group of Mark II Droidekas to wipe out the intruders. The Imperial and Republic troops reached the nexus hallway which led to each of the generator rooms, and a three-sided firefight erupted. Supported by additional turrets and armed with several E-web heavy repeating blasters, the defenders were far more tenacious in their defense, spraying the area with automatic weapon fire. Despite heavy losses, the Republic troops managed to place and detonate charges in two of the three Power Generators, which caused power losses, blackouts, and destroyed equipment in multiple sectors of the base.

Endgame[]

After the charges were set off, the Droidekas reached the generator area. Utilizing flanking maneuvers and additional heavy fire, all remaining Imperial and Republic forces were surrounded and wiped out. The only survivor was the Sith apprentice Darth Imperious, who managed to escape during the ensuing chaos and concealed himself in the dark in one of the blacked-out sections. Once the Droidekas were returned to their charging stations, Imperious evaded the remaining guards and made his way to an exit. He then reached the landing craft that he arrived in and took off accompanied by the commando squad's advisor, who was the only other survivor of the battle.

Although the charges set by the New Republic troops heavily damaged the facility, its structural integrity was maintained and most of its prototype components, testing equipment, and resource storage containers survived the attack. Several military leaders in the Dark Order, most notably General Persia, thought it was a poor decision of Jaden Korr's to hastily cobble together a small force in enemy territory in a direct assault on a well-defended installation. Adding to the mission's status as a failure was the loss of two Shadowtroopers and a team of dedicated Storm commandos. This and other strategic failures of Jaden would lead to his eventual death. Meanwhile, reconstruction of the facility began. The Consortium's leader, Tyber Zann, was furious that both the Imperial Remnant and the New Republic were able to launch a nearly fatal attack on an important facility, and especially on his throne world. Along with the repairs, the complex was reinforced with more men and substantially more powerful defenses. Zann's subordinates assured him that the base would not be so easily attacked again.
