[edit] Early life
Nothing was known of Shmi Skywalker's early life until she was twenty-two years old. She had been told that she was pregnant, although she did not believe it at first because she was a virgin. However, she was, in fact, pregnant, and for months she tried to figure out what might have happened. She finally accepted that she somehow conceived as a virgin, and she made the mistake of letting that fact slip out. A man named Sarus believed her story and told her about the Prophecy of the Chosen One, which spoke of a savior born to a virgin mother, but she dismissed it and asked him never to speak to her again. He agreed, though she knew that he kept a close eye on her, and in the end she became thankful for that. When she was nine months pregnant, she was attacked by a lightsaber-wielding assailant who intended to murder her and prevent the birth of her child, though she was able to escape with Sarus to the Ophuchi Sanctuary.[2]
Despite their escape, the assailant was able to find them. Sarus and his men chased the warrior outside into the rain, and while they were gone Shmi went into a painful labor. She had no idea what to expect, so the intensity of it took her by surprise. Sarus arrived just in time to help her, and even though the assailant was forced to retreat, the other Ophuchi did not survive. While Sarus was badly injured, he was able to help Shmi deliver Annikin, and he even suggested the name when she said she could not think of one.[2]
Shmi fell in love with the name and decided to give it to her son, and shortly thereafter Sarus brought her to the nearest medical center he could find. Before saying goodbye, he gave her a snippet of Japor and asked her to give it to Annikin when he was thirteen, something she decided not to do. She did not regret doing it, as she did not want Annikin somehow taken out of her life.[2]

Six years later, Shmi met Cliegg Lars, whom she eventually married, giving her a step-son named Owen Lars. She and Annikin moved into the Lars homestead where she lived for at least thirteen years. During the Invasion of Utapau, Annikin came before Shmi and Cliegg with Obi-Wan Kenobi, who requested permission for the people on his vessel to stay at their farm while Annikin helped repair the ship. Although Cliegg was initially reluctant, she was able to convince him to agree to it. Annikin opened up to her shortly thereafter about what he perceived to be Owen's arrogance regarding the situation, and she told Annikin that he needed to give Owen more time to open up to him.[1]
