The final novel of the Shadows of the Jedi Trilogy, the novel is based on the Role-Plays of TheStarWarsRP.Com. The novel takes place during the Great Sovereign Crusades and deals primarily with the title character’s relationships with the Jedi Order and Ein Nightblade, along with Kalel Esunkit, Isabella Dashin and Cos Jonathan Dashin. The novel as a whole serves as a prelude to events that happen later in the universe of the Alternative Star Wars Saga.

The author devotes much of the novel to the internal conflicts that Ussej Padric Bac III must deal with during the Bendu Holy War of the Great Sovereign Crusades, as well as his transformation into a character that helps influence thousands of years worth of events in the Star Wars Saga and the Alternative Star Wars Saga and the transformation of relationships with many other characters that will play a pivotal role in events to come. The novel deals solely with original characters, some of which are descendants of those seen in Shadows of the Jedi: The Legend of Ussej Padric Bac, Star Wars: The End of Life As We Know It and Shadows of the Jedi: The Legend of Ussej Padric Bac II.

“Over here, Kravin,” the elderly Jack Prime shouted. “Must you always run off when you see something new?”

He had brought his nephew Kravin on his first visit to the Grasslands of the Ashla, and the boy was as excited as ever. It had always been the young boy’s dream to become a Bendu Knight, and in his mind this brought him one step closer. Now that they were nearing the village and the Bendu Temple of Light, perhaps the time would come sooner rather than later.

“I’m sorry, uncle,” the young boy apologized. “I’m just so excited to finally be here. I just wish we could meditate inside.”

Kravin’s apology wasn’t truly sincere and his uncle could recognize that fact. The boy was excited and simply being able to look upon the ancient Bendu Temple of Light was truly overwhelming to him. Jack chuckled as his young nephew slowly walked over to him. His bones ached with every step, for he had been feeling ill as of late in his nearly sixty years of age. The two sat down, Kravin unable to take his eyes off of the beauty of the temple.

“Don’t worry, my boy,” Jack said. “Your time will come soon. You just need to learn patience, that is all.”

The boy sighed, as he was still disappointed. Patience was not his strong suit, nor did he want it to ever be. What he wanted, he wanted now. What he wanted was to be a Bendu Knight and to work side by side with the Bendu High Priest, perhaps even with a seat on the Council of Priests. That would be an even greater dream come true.

“I know, uncle,” Kravin said, “but am I know part of the Bendu Order now? When they came to our village, they said they would test me to see if I could be trained. I should at least have permission to pass beyond the gates.”

“Do not be so certain of yourself,” Jack reminded him. “To be a Bendu Knight is a proud and sacred honor, but just because you have been accepted for testing does not mean you have been guaranteed training. You’re twelve years old. Most children your age should have to wait another year. Be grateful that you are even being considered now.”

“Doesn’t that mean I’m stronger than the most,” Kravin asked, “that I should be guaranteed a master for training?”

“The Council simply needs to make sure that you can complete the necessary requirements,” he said. “It is to see if you will be able to endure their training. Training to become a Bendu is not an easy challenge. It demands much from you physically, mentally and spiritually. Don’t believe that it’s that they do not trust you. They simply just need to be sure that you are a strong warrior with an honest soul. You will be accepted soon, my young nephew, do not fear. Now, let us go. It is time that you pray within the Grasslands of the Ashla.”

Kravin’s head lowered, looking down towards the ground in what could almost be described as boredom. It was not the answer he wanted, though he knew it was the one he would have to accept for the time being. As he looked up, a boy a few years older than him approached. Wes Hohler, a seventeen year old Bendu Apprentice, was just making his way to the Temple of Light, a great deal of energy in his strides. He was filled with honor, that much Kravin could tell, as he made his way to the temple to begin yet another day. He stopped as he approached Kravin and Jack, smiling.

“Hello,” Wes said as he approached. “How are the two of you this morning?”

Kravin smiled, his large eyes looking up at the one who was but a few years older than him. He was puzzled at his kindness, to say the least. Everyone on Kal’Shabbol was a kind soul, that much was certain, but there were still times when it struck him as odd. Kravin looked ahead, noticing that his uncle had already continued on ahead, waiting for him at a nearby waterfall.

“Are you speaking to me,” Kravin asked.

“I am,” Wes told him, pondering what the boy was doing. Normally, he would assume that the boy was simply admiring the surroundings, but this one seemed to be overly excited for someone who had simply come to pray. Noticing the elderly man he was with walking away, Wes assumed that it would be a short conversation.

“You wish to join our order,” Wes continued, “don’t you?”

“Yes,” Kravin said, realizing now that the one standing before him was part of the Bendu Order. “You’re a Bendu warrior, aren’t you?”

“Now what would make you say that,” Wes asked, smiling.

“I can sense a lot of honor inside of you,” Kravin told him. “All that honor could only belong to a great Bendu warrior, right?”

“What is your name,” Wes asked, curious as to who he was speaking with.

“Kravin,” he responded. “Kravin Prime.”

“Well, young Kravin Prime,” Wes said, “if there is anything I can impart upon you today, let it be that a war does not make one great. War destroys part of a man’s soul, which is why it is best to be avoid it at all costs.”

“Kravin,” Jack shouted from afar, “come quick.”

“Sorry,” Kravin told Wes. “I have to get going. I hope to see you again soon!”

“And I you, Kravin Prime,” Wes said, smiling as he turned to head towards the temple.

“What is, Uncle,” Kravin asked as he finally caught up with Jack.

“There’s someone I would like you to meet,” Jack said, smiling as he pointed towards a man crossing over the bridge only a few meters away. “An old friend of mine.”

The man he was referring to stepped off of the bridge, kneeling down at the river to gently help a small water creature back into the slowly moving stream. As he stood back up, he looked up to the sun and the nearby planets that hung overhead with a smile. His white cloak ran from his neck to the ground itself and his long, brown hair flowed in the Ashlan breeze as he scratched his brown beard, the very brown beard that had already started to gray.

“An old friend,” Kravin asked his uncle.

“Yes,” Jack replied, smiling. “It is the Bendu High Priest.”

Kravin’s jaw dropped as he realized that it was the High Priest of the Bendu Order, the man he had seen in pictures a few dozen times in school. His name was Ussej Padric Bac III, the grandson of the legendary Ussej Padric Bac. His grandfather was a hero to all members of the Bendu Order and the citizens of Kal’Shabbol as he had saved the planet from unspeakable peril at the time of his historic sacrifice. Many, however, still did not believe that he had died. Legend suggested that his immortal soul was taken by The Skywalker to dwell within the light of the Ashlan Nebula on Ashlan Four, the planet of the Whills. However, none of that could be proven. Kravin was not concerned with past history, but rather with the fact that such a famous man was now standing before him. This Ussej had already achieved much in his life, considering that he was already the head of the Bendu Order at the age of thirty-three. It was as if Kravin was staring up at a superhero.

As he finally stepped into the Grasslands of the Ashla, Ussej smiled as he noticed the dozens of travelers in the area. He always loved to see these people as it gave him great joy knowing that he was doing the right thing by protecting, leading and watching over them. He saw one of his apprentices, Wes Hohler, in the area and gave him a compassionate nod as the boy continued his journey towards the temple. As he stepped further into the Grasslands, he saw the face of his old friend, Jack Prime, and his young nephew, Kravin. He and Jack had met years ago in the small, eastern village of Sinead and how been friends for fifteen years. He bowed to his friend who courteously returned the gesture.

“I must talk with Sir Bac privately for a moment,” Jack said to his nephew. “Stay here for a few moments until I return.”

Now that the formalities were out of the way, Ussej and Jack tightly shook each others hands with a smile on their faces. Ussej was concerned as he saw the face of his old friend, however, as he looked pale and almost weak.

“Hello, Jack,” Ussej said. “How have you been?”

“I’m sick, Ussej,” Jack said quietly, not wanting Kravin to hear.

“Oh,” Ussej said, distraught. “How bad?”

“It’s only in an early stage,” Jack told him, “but it’s far enough along to where they don’t think they can stop it. I have five, maybe six years tops.”

“That’s horrible,” Ussej said. “How did your nephew respond to the news?”

“He doesn’t know yet,” Jack replied. “I know that you’re deliberating on whether or not you should accept Kravin into your order, and I’m here now to beg you to accept him. He needs to become part of a larger family so that he is not left alone if and when I die. I don’t want to see his destiny destroyed because of me.”

“We were preparing to test him within a few weeks,” Ussej said, his voice still distraught with the news of his friends imminent death, “though I suppose as a favor to you I can speed the process along. Bring him to the Gates of Light tomorrow at sunrise. It is there that he will find his first test.”

“Thank you, my old friend,” Jack said jubilantly. “Thank you so much. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Ussej smiled as the old man slowly walked back towards his nephew. Ussej turned and began to walk back to the Temple of Light, as he now had to quickly prepare a test for the young Bendu Hopeful. As he passed through the gates and began to walk up the ancient spiraling staircase, he suddenly stopped. His eyes flinched for a moment and his face became pale as he collapsed onto the stairs. Before losing all sense of his surroundings, he could feel that a vision was coming upon him, most likely the same one that he had been seeing for the past few months. He did not know why it was happening, but it was. All suddenly went dark and then it came....

It was as if he had been living a dream as he walked through an area completely blanketed in nothing but white. However, his surroundings quickly changed to that of a large control room. There were two other people in the area and half a dozen dead bodies, one of them of a young woman. To his left was a young man crouching over the young woman, most likely in mourning. To his right was a tall, demon-like figure locked behind what looked to be a steel cage. However, he knew not who these people were. Unable to see their faces, they were nothing more than a blur to him. He looked at his torso, finding that he had been stabbed. By the look of the wound, it was a cauterized lightsaber wound. Other, smaller wounds were stained across his arms and legs.

His eyes flinched, the vision playing with his mind just as it always did. However, in the labyrinth of his subconscious he knew that the vision was not yet over.

Though he was still in the same cold, dark, metallic control room, the circumstances ad changed. The young man and the dead women were gone while the dark demon was forcing himself out from the cage he had found himself behind. Ussej now stood at a computer console, working the controls as the demon grabbed his neck and forced him down onto the console. The demon uttered something to him, something that he could not make out, and just as the demon finished speaking the room lit up. All went white, and suddenly his father was standing before him with his arms wide open....

He returned to normal consciousness, quickly shooting up from the stairs while a cold sweat made its way down his face. He was surrounded my numbers Bendu Knights and Apprentices, all of them worried. One of them was Wes Hohler, who looked even more concerned than the rest of them had. Ussej was still a bit dazed, looking around to be sure that he really was standing within the Temple of Light.

“Are you alright, your highness,” Wes asked, gravely concerned.

“Yes,” Ussej slowly replied, though he was unsure if he had just made a liar out of himself. “Yes, I believe so.”

The worst part of what he had just said was that he didn’t believe he was alright. He had seen bits and pieces of that in visions before, but never as powerful as it just was. It was if he had just seen an omen, something warning him. Of what, however, he did not know. The one thing that truly worried him was not what he saw in the vision but the fact that he had such a strong vision. It was a vision of the future that had caused his grandfather to turn to the Dark Side, and it was because of his grandfather’s choice that he vowed not to let that happen to him.
