[edit] Biography

[edit] Jedi Master

"The Force is not a key you use to open every door you find. Or that is at least what Master Nju told me at least three times each lightsaber training class."
Padmé Naberrie to Anakin Skywalker[src]

Nju was a lightsaber instructor of the Jedi Order, he trained many Jedi in lightsaber combat including Padmé Naberrie and Anakin Skywalker. The Lethan Twi'lek Teya Carsise was his apprentice, and after the trials she would assist him with instruction.

By 32 BBY he was a member of the High Jedi Council, below only Mace Windu and Yoda in seniority. He was skeptical of the assertions that Qui-Gon Jinn had made at the time of the Naboo Crisis:that the Sith had returned and that the prophecy of the Chosen One would be fulfiled in the form of Anakin Skywalker. After the death of Darth Maxah, it was agreed unanimously among the Council that the Sith had indeed returned, yet it is unknown if Nju supported Skywalker's training following the events of the Battle of Naboo.

[edit] Sith Apprentice

"Why have you done this? Why have you sold out to the Sith? I trusted you!"
Padmé Naberrie upon finding out Nju's identity as Darth Typhon[src]

Nju's defection to the Sith is shrouded in mystery, while it can be safely assumed that it took place following the death of Sidious' first apprentice Maxah in 32 BBY, it is unknown exactly when Sidious approached Nju and how he managed to convince the Jedi Master to not only turn to the dark side of the Force by becoming a spy for him on the Council. He took on the name Darth Typhon, but retain the blue colour of his lightsabers. It is possible that it involved the death of Nju's former apprentice, Teya Carsice, as her death was around this time, but those are speculations. What is known, is that Sidious' other apprentice, the former Jedi Dooku knew of Nju's defection, though the two almost never crossed paths.

In keeping with his subterefuge, Nju did not play an active part in the Secession Crisis but was one of the Jedi that Supreme Chancellor Palpatine often consulted for advice. Given that Palpatine was actually Sidious, Nju's Sith Master, it is possible that this was how the two communicated as it would not have been suspsicious for Nju to see the Chancellor.

[edit] Discovery (22 BBY)

"Master Nju!"
Padmé Naberrie[src]

During the Imbroglio Summit, he was sent on in advance of Windu's Jedi strike team to monitor the situation, but made the mistake of communicating with Sidious while he was there and was consequentially dsicovered by Padmé Naberrie, who was tracking a disturbance in the Force she had sensed. The two fought, and Naberrie resisted Nju's attempts to turn her over to the dark side. Nju had intended to kill Naberrie, but he realised that it was a much worse fate to spare her as his betrayal would not be able to be believed. He cut off part of her right arm with her own lightsaber and left her to join the arrivng Jedi. While Naberrie was having her cybernatic arm fitted, Nju explained that she had fought Count Dooku and this was unquestioningly accepted by the Council.

[edit] Clone Wars (22 BBY-17 BBY)

Nju was a Jedi High General during the Clone Wars and assisted Mace Windu and Yoda with the ground defense. It can be argued, that Nju's influence may have lengthened the war as he was able to subtly direct Jedi efforts to where the Sith intended.

He was also the Council's liason with the Senate, having several insiders that passed him information. It is possible that Sidious was his "source" and he merely passed on information to his apprentice that he wanted revealed to the Jedi Council.

[edit] Battle of the Jedi Temple

"It’s time?"
"Yes.
"
Dooku and Renust Nju before the Battle of the Jedi Temple[src]

Following the capture of Count Dooku by Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Naberrie, Nju interrogated the former Jedi at the request of Windu as Nju had not known Dooku very well. The interrogation was slow, perhaps deliberately slow, despite Windu's effotts to convince Nju that Dooku had to be brought to trial.

If Nju was stalling, the plan worked for Sidious contacted him shortly after revealing himself as a Sith Lord to Skywalker, Nju entered Dooku's cell to tell him of this news and then arranged for him to escape. While Dooku began to the purge of the Temple, Nju encountered Kuan Yin Nevu whom had been told of his real identity. She was trying to find Windu along with Skywalker and Naberrie, buy Nju prevented her, engaging her in combat and then killing her as Skywalker and Naberrie fled.

"You…too…Nju?"
"Yes, I have long looked forward to this,
friend."
Mace Windu and Renust Nju before the former's death [src]

Later, Nju found Windu and Dooku duelling and stabbed the Jedi Master in the back just as he was preparing to kill Dooku. Windu died, shocked beyond belief at Nju's betrayal, but after that the two Sith were attacked by a large number of Jedi headed by Yoda. In the confusion, Nju managed to slip away but Yoda followed him and the two duelled, Yoda clearly having the upper hand and the duel moved to the Temple Memorial Room where Yoda, after slicing Nju's hand and one of his lightsabers in half, use the force to summon lightsabers from the memorials to various Jedi and encased him in a cage. Nju was skeptical of Yoda's offers of mercy, convinced that there limits to compassion and that the Jedi Master wanted him killed, and took his own life with his one remaining lightsaber.

[edit] Personality

"Haven’t I taught you anything?"
—Renust Nju to Padmé Naberrie[src]

Despite his staus as a Jedi Master and member of the High Jedi Council, Nju never seemed to have grasped the Jedi teachings of humilty and self-restraint. He was known for his arrogance, particularly by the Jedi who trained under him. Nju also seemed to be a stickler for procedure, completely rejecting the idea of accepting Anakin Skywalker for training due to his age and the fact there were proven legitimate reasons for training Jedi from infancy.

These traits seem to have intensified after his turn to the dark side of the Force.

[edit] Power and Abilities

"Even you, with all your knowledge of the Force, will never truly know what the dark side truly is and why it ensnared me."
—Renust Nju to Yoda shortly before his death[src]

Nju was competent in all forms of lightsaber combat but favoured Jar'Kai, or dual-lightsaber combat, for which he developed a variant of his own based on Form V: Djem So. He also utilised Force speed during combat along with Force push and telekinesis, which meant he was virtually unstoppable, as Padmé Naberrie and Kuan Yin Nevu discovered, though both Yoda and Mace Windu could best him.

Nju was also had a very strong connection to the Force and was capable of a powerful Force concealment that he used to mask his true identity as a Sith. He could also conjure Force lightning that he used on Naberrie during their encounter on Imbroglio.

[edit] Behind the Scenes

[edit] Origin

Renust Nju was a relatively late character to be added to the Jedi Padmé Trilogy, brought in after the sub-plot of his betrayal was realised in Attack of the Clones (AU). He was then retroactively added to The Phantom Menace (AU). Some of the lines he speaks in the Jedi Council scenes in The Phantom Menace (AU) were first spoken by Mace Windu, which explains why Windu does not say much in that scene.

[edit] Name

His name, "Renust Nju" was taken from a shortened anagram of the words "just betrayal", the name originally being "Brenust Njual". Nju's Sith name of Typhon is named after a mythological Greek mobster of the same name who is the god of storms and where the word "typhoon" is derived.
