R2-D2, also known as Artoo was an astromech droid and perhaps the most famous of the R2-series. He first served on board Queen Nalanda's starship and accompanied Qui-Gon Jinn, Padmé Naberrie and Danta Pela to Mos Eisley on Tatooine and assisted the young Anakin Skywalker with his podracer. It was on Tatooine that Artoo first met C-3PO who was to become his life-long friend. Artoo was involved in the Battle of Naboo, helping Anakin Skywalker when they found themselves in the cockpit of a starfighter flying towards a space battle.
