The Force will be with you. Always.
—Obi-Wan Kenobi to Luke Skywalker
Obi-Wan Kenobi was a Jedi Master in the final days of the Galactic Republic. He was renowned for having been the mentor of both Anakin Skywalker and Luke Skywalker, whom he trained in the ways of the Force. He first became the mentor of Anakin Skywalker after the Second Battle of Theed, when Kenobi agreed to take Anakin as his apprentice in honor of the dying wish of Kenobi’s master, Qui-Gon Jinn. They trained together as student and teacher, as well as friends, for years, all the way into the Clone Wars when Anakin became a Jedi Knight.
With Anakin, General Kenobi fought a number of battles in the Clone Wars, earning him the nickname "The Negotiator." He fought throughout the war, including in the Battle of Coruscant when he and Anakin rescued Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, who was secretly the Dark Lord of the Sith. After the battle, Kenobi tracked down the droid General Grievous on Utapau and killed him. Shortly thereafter, he was betrayed by his clone troopers when Palpatine issued Order 66 to eliminate the Jedi.
Kenobi regrouped with Grand Master Yoda, where they learned that only a handful of Jedi had survived the Chancellor’s assassinations. They also learned that Anakin had fallen to the dark side of the Force and had become Darth Vader, the apprentice to the newly-crowned Emperor Palpatine. Kenobi traveled to Mustafar where he confronted and defeated Vader, leaving him to die on the banks of a lava river. Leaving Mustafar, Kenobi traveled to Polis Massa with the injured Padme Amidala, Anakin’s wife, who died shortly after giving birth to twins: Luke and Leia. Kenobi took Luke to Tatooine to live with the Lars family and then went into exile in the desert wastes, taking on the name Ben Kenobi.
Nearly two decades later, Kenobi met up with Luke, whose aunt and uncle were killed by the Galactic Empire, and began to train him as a Jedi. Along with Han Solo and Chewbacca, Kenobi and Luke launched a mission to rescue Leia, whom Luke did not know was his sister, aboard the Death Star. Kenobi confronted Vader once more, allowing Vader to kill him and give the others a chance to escape. Kenobi vanished, later appearing as a spirit to help Luke in his training with Yoda, and also to later confirm to Luke that Vader was his father and Leia was his sister. Kenobi appeared to Luke a few more times, including with Anakin after Luke redeemed him, and later to tell Luke that his spirit would enter the netherworld of the Force and would no longer commune with him. Kenobi’s influence on Luke lived on into the New Jedi Order, and Luke named his own son, Ben Skywalker, in Kenobi’s honor.
