Nute Gunray was Viceroy of the Trade Federation during the Naboo Crisis and was assisted by the Sith, an affiliation he would later come to regret.

Gunray rose through the ranks of the Trade Federation, manage to maneuver himself into the directorate and to the position of Viceroy. It was about this time that he first encountered Darth Sidious, though there are no details about their first meeting. It was following his disappointment at the lack of results of the Eriadu Trade Summit that Sidious suggested that the Federation blockade the planet of Naboo as a reaction. What Gunray did not count on was the presence of Sidious' apprentice Darth Maxah, who killed Shakya Devi, one of the Jedi ambassadors, who Supreme Chancellor Valorum had secretly sent to mediate the dispute between the two parties. The troops managed to secure the planet, yet Queen Nalanda managed to escape assisted by other Jedi that had arrived on the planet due to the actions of Devi's Padawan Padmé Naberrie . Gunray reported this to an incensed Sidious and secured their subjugation of the planet, yet this was to be short-lived as when Nalanda returned she formed an alliances with the Gungans, deactivated all battle droids and ended the Federation's occupation.
