The New Great Galactic War, also known as the New Great War or Great Galactic War, was a conflict that began in 567 ABY between Darth Hargrev's Sith Empire and the Galactic Federation Triumvirate, ending in 598 ABY.
Background[]
We will disperse into the galaxy in small numbers, masking ourselves, hiding amidst the enemy. We will infiltrate governments on every planet. All must be brought down for something new to be created. Together or alone, we will slip onto worlds and strike from the shadows. We will be invisible. We will be patient. All that exists will be torn apart from within. Darth Krayt's vision of the galaxy remade will be realized. He lives in us. The Sith will prevail.

During the Second Imperial Civil War, One Sith, led by Darth Krayt, were defeated by the combined forces of the Empire-in-exile, Galactic Alliance Remnant, and New Jedi Order. These factions entered an alliance and created the Galactic Federation Triumvirate, which, over time, became much like the old Galactic Alliance. With the defeat of Darth Krayt's Galactic Empire, as well as the main remnants of the One Sith—Darth Nihl's Sith Empire and Darth Wredd's insurgency—the Triumvirate became the dominant government in the galaxy. Eventually, the Empire-in-exile completely merged with the Triumvirate, becoming one unified state, with the New Jedi Order acting as its guardians, much like in the times of the New Republic more than a century ago.
Meanwhile, on the ancient Sith world of Dromund Kaas, the Sith Lord Darth Hargrev summoned the remaining Sith to his planet. He performed a dark side ritual that allowed him to live for centuries, and proclaimed himself to be the new Sith Emperor. Over the course of the next few centuries, Darth Hargrev's Sith Empire built up its military, and rebuilt Kaas City. It built up a large armada, in preparation for the war against the Triumvirate. Hargrev promised the Sith and their loyalists revenge on the Triumvirate and the Jedi for their defeat of the One Sith in the past. Hargrev's Sith slowly rebuilt their forces and prepared patiently for an invasion of the Triumvirate and the galaxy.
The Triumvirate built up its own strength as well, creating an large navy of warships to defend itself. The leadership of the Triumvirate was one Chief of State, with two Triumvirs below the chief, acting as his heads of government. Although the Triumvirate experienced growth during this time, it was also infiltrated by spies of Imperial Intelligence and the One Sith.
The Sith Empire reemerges[]
In 500 ABY, Sith Emperor Hargrev decided that the Empire was almost ready and would attack before the end of the century. The Triumvirate suffered minor internal problems, mostly instigated by Imperial agents, such as the slave revolt on Orvax IV. Agents of the Sith Emperor were not only organizing minor events, however. They also set up Imperial puppet governments in several systems on the edge of the Outer Rim Territories, and forged alliances with different factions in the galaxy.
The Chiss Ascendancy accepted an alliance with the Sith Empire secretly, and as did several other systems in the Outer Rim. Meanwhile, the Imperial military's war games became more constant, occurring every day. The massive Imperial armada was ready to be unleashed on the galaxy. In 567 ABY, the Sith Emperor gave the order for the invasion of the Triumvirate.

Initial Sith onslaught[]
Fall of Korriban[]

One of the first Sith targets was the ancient Sith homeworld of Korriban. The Imperial Navy attacked with a large fleet of ships. The planet was defended by a small Triumvirate garrison, and a few Triumvirate Navy ships. The Imperial armada destroyed most of the ships and captured some of them through boarding actions, and then landed ground troops, led by Darth Aigeus.
The Triumvirate garrison put up a fight, but was ultimately overwhelmed and defeated by the Sith Imperial forces. The Jedi Knight who commanded the garrison, Ven Assam, was able to escape the onslaught and reported back to Coruscant. It was a while before the Triumvirate even learned what happened, however, as everyone but the Jedi Knight had been wiped out.
Ambush in Far Indrexu[]
Not being aware of the fall of Korriban, the Triumvirate dispatched a fleet to the Far Indrexu region to investigate. The Emperor planned a trap for them, and an Imperial armada was already awaiting their arrival in the area. The Triumvirate did not know whether the ships were hostile or not, so they sent diplomatic vessels. The Imperial fleet allowed them to send images back to Coruscant before completely destroying them.
The fleet then proceeded to send ground forces to different planets in the region, including Raxus and Pakuuni. Meanwhile, the Triumvirate summoned a new fleet, under the command of Admiral Reldar Stazi. They entered the region to find themselves surrounded by the Imperials, and were forced to retreat to escape destruction.

With the destruction of Triumvirate forces in the Far Indrexu region, the Sith Empire turned its sights to a new target: the Sluis sector. The sector contained the Sluis Van Shipyards, one of the Triumvirate's main starship manufacturing facilities, making it a target of the Imperial invaders.
The Imperial naval forces quickly moved on Sluis Van, which was entirely undefended with the Triumvirate forces still scattered. Various Sith starfighter squadrons attacked the shipyards and destroyed the orbital ring that made up the station.
The Sith forces continued to press, and conquered the world itself. Much as would continue to be the case as the war pressed on, the Imperial forces executed any civilian or government workers who refused to swear fealty to the Empire. The token Triumvirate military personnel were not granted such mercy, they were simply hunted down and summarily executed as enemies of the Empire.
