  • Hey. Could you inform the community about that thread in some way? :) I know it couldn't be shown as a message, because it's the Discussions forum.

  • Hello SavageOpress1138. I was the creator of the content on Santh Degoi's page here on Fanon. However, I lost may login information for that account and returned years later, with other account, to revisit the story of my beloved character, in the Fanon universe.

I am editing the page according to modifications I made on the character's story. If it is against the regulations of the community, please, let me know.

    Sincerely

    • Sav, see this thread for my progress on the issue so far. It's an unusual case and, though I recoil from the idea in theory, given the overlap of edits on the first day of the article's life, apparently with JackMarvel's tacit consent, my instinct is to give Santh "ownership" of the article unless and until JackMarvel comes back. We have some precedent for the "transfer of ownership" of an abandoned article in The Gray Jedi Order. Your thoughts?

        Loading editor
    • I second your instincts here, in particular the point about The Gray Jedi Order ruling. I don’t mind allowing the ownership transfer at this point. Of course, if the original author were to return, we would be obligated to follow their wishes, but sans that, I think the circumstances are flexible enough as to allow it.

Jumping in here to point out that you knowing the source, or even sharing it here, is not enough. The Image Policy requires the use of the Information template, with the description, source, and license listed. So far you have the license (the relevant image being here), which is a good start, but not enough. Please consult the tutorial for a step-by-step walkthrough, with pictures, of everything required.

Hi there. You’ll need to follow the Image Policy as noted by Sak, but as long as you do so, your image should be fine. If you have any questions, please let us know. Cheers!

    • I'm sorry to hear that and would urge you to reconsider, but it is, of course, ultimately your choice. Best of luck.

I read it and I kinda liked it. I have no other feedback at the moment, but I just thought I'd mention it and say hello. Hope you're well.

  • I was leaving this message when the question in the second paragraph occurred to me. Why do we still have that category (and/or why do any of the articles in it still exist)? If there isn't a reason, I can go through and clean them out.

      Loading editor
    • Ah, yes, an old nemesis of mine rears its head again. There’s no need for the category, but I’d caution you that I’m fairly certain not everything currently in it would actually violate the policy.

Im sorry...I just thought it be best to mention it so it can be nipped in the bud...as its making me extreemly uncomfortable

    • Hi there. I've looked over the message thread you linked to, and while I'm sincerely sorry you're nervous and anxious, I don't see anything that has crossed a line. The thing about assuming good faith is that it is a choice: Sak assumes you're willing to put in the work, and you assume that Sak is genuinely trying to help you in his capacity as a Moderator. Neither of you has given the other any reason to doubt that.

The fact of the matter is that we would like to help you as much as possible, but there's only so much help we can give. The administration cannot and does not give actual counsel on the copyright status of images—that goes beyond what we're comfortable with/qualified to do. In general, we don't seek out all of the sourcing information either. That's typically the job of the image uploader ("Images are a privilege, not a right"). In this case, Sak did go beyond what he would normally do in providing the source. While from a purely linguistic perspective I can understand how you might think "freebie" implies future payment, I would hope that context clues show that's not what was really meant. (First and foremost, there is no system by which he could ask for payment nor receive it. Beyond that, it simply isn't how things are done here). "Freebie" could just as easily have been "leg up" or any other colloquialism indicative of his extra assistance. If it helps, imagine you're having a conversation with an acquaintance or casual friend. If they said they'd give you a "freebie," you probably wouldn't immediately assume they intend to charge you the next time you exchange advice.

To specifically speak to your image policy issues for a moment, I would encourage you (as Sak has) to read the tutorial. It walks you step-by-step through the entire process of uploading and sourcing/licensing. At the very least, if there is a particular section you find confusing, you can reference it that way for further clarifications. Additionally, I'm afraid your analogy doesn't actually hold up. I don't want to go too far down this rabbit hole—because quite candidly, I'm not a copyright law expert and will get out of my depth very quickly—but taking a screenshot does not, legally, make it yours. That's just not how copyright law works.

I'm sorry for the very long message, but I wanted to give you a reply that adequately addressed all of the issues. I hope this alleviates some of your concerns. If not, or if you have other questions, please don't hesitate to ask. I'm here to help, and first and foremost, I serve the community. Cheers!

  • Hey, Sav, how's it going?

I just began putting together the page for the Wiki Awards with the full details and everything, and I was just wondering about the 13th Wiki Awards logo, and whether or not I need to make one myself. If I do, that's completely fine, I love editing images. Other than clarification on that, I don't think I have any other Awards-related questions.

    Thanks!

    • You certainly don't need to do it yourself, but if you love editing images and have experience, you're likely to do a much better job that I would—I'd love to see what you'd do. If you want to make it yourself, you can take a look at some of the old ones and go from there. Cheers!
