The Merak campaign was a series of battles the prototype Super Star Destroyer Asperity, which was being built at Kuat Drive Yards by the Galactic Republic but was hijacked by the Confederacy of Independent Systems during a raid. After acquiring such a powerful new warship, the Mon Calamari Separatist Admiral Merak began a new offensive against the Republic. His forces destroyed much of the shipyard at Fondor, ambushed a Republic task force at Abregado-rae, bombarded factories on Rothana, and captured the Outer Rim world of Byss. After those successful assaults, Merak had gained the Republic's full attention, which sent the Victory Fleet, led by Jedi Masters Mace Windu and Plo Koon, to hunt him down.

By 20 BBY, the war between the Republic and the Confederacy had reached a stalemate. A Mon Calamari naval officer fighting for the Confederacy, Admiral Merak, decided to break the stalemate with something drastic. His spies reported on a new warship prototype reaching completion at Kuat. Supreme Chancellor Palpatine had commissioned Kuati engineers in 22 BBY to work on a massive new warship for the Republic Navy. This warship would have changed the tide of the war in the Republic's favor. However, Separatist spies on Kuat learned of this reported to Admiral Merak of the ship and its location. His fleet entered the system and quickly dispatched the Kuati security forces, while droid marines boarded the ship, a prototype Super Star Destroyer called the Asperity. They quickly took control of the vessel and left the system along with the Separatist fleet.
