Melany Baclaw was an underrated, virtually unknown officer in the Imperial Navy who came into her own long after Palpatine's Empire came to a close. Once she was able, as a woman, to be taken as seriously as her male colleagues, she rose quickly through the ranks and by the time of the rise of the Stellar Imperium, it was not only the Galactic Remnant that took notice. She joined the Stellar Imperial armed forces and was given rudimentary Force training by her younger sister, Darth Inferna.

Melany was the daughter of Spencer Baclaw and Luryana Quoll. Spencer's older brother, Timras Baclaw, was a Jedi of the Old Order, and Spencer spoke of him only to warn his daughters about the evils of the Jedi and to make them aware that some people might find out about their connection to the Jedi and use it against them.

Melany followed her father's footsteps and joined the Imperial Navy as soon as she turned sixteen. She was a tall, large-framed girl and it was difficult for her commanders to overlook her in favor of the boys, for she was brutal and intimidating. She eventually graduated from the Academy in 3 ABY, because of her own merits and the fact that her father was an Imperial Admiral. If either had not been true, she probably would not have been allowed to graduate.

After the Emperor's death in 4 ABY, in the Battle of Endor which also claimed her father's life, Melany declared that she would never join the New Republic, and she stayed with the Imperial Remnant for many years, to and beyond the command of Grand Admiral Thrawn. Her mother died in the intervening years and her sister Prille had disappeared during anti-Imperial riots on Coruscant. However, Prille was still alive, and training under the tutelage of Darth Trefitz. Now known as Darth Inferna, Prille found her older sister and invited her to leave the fading Imperial Remnant and join the rising star of the galaxy, the Stellar Imperium.

Melany received some Force training from Inferna, and used this training to make better use of her body in combat. She was already a big woman, tougher and stronger than most galactic-class female wrestlers, and she also wore heavy cleated boots that strengthened her legs and turned them into weapons.

She was eventually promoted to the rank of General, and selected by Empress Shira - Lady Lumiya - to go to a remote planet called G0-CVII where a pair of Jedi were rumored to have escaped to after receiving some information about Imperial activity on Dantooine - the accidental release of a deadly plague (Dantooine Virus), the forerunner to the non-lethal Jedi-targeting Cyalax Virus. General Melany Baclaw, Lord Welk, and Lieutenant Odact took twenty-two troopers and went to the planet.

Jacen and Anakin Solo were discovered there, and the Imperial troops fought them. However, a group of wild walkers killed most of the troops and Jacen and Anakin escaped in the chaos. Welk and Melany survived long enough to pursue them; Welk dueled Jacen, and Melany fought Anakin. Melany was able to shoot close enough to Anakin to burn his hand and destroy his lightsaber, and once her blaster ran out of charges she chased him and fought him hand-to-hand. A decimeter taller and more than twenty-five kilograms heavier, Melany was stronger than Anakin, and she injured him severely. Jacen, however, defeated Welk, and Welk escaped him - minus his arm - when Jacen ran to help Anakin. Jacen cut off Melany's legs and the walker queen devoured her.
