- "...all eyes tell a story, and that story is fear. Fear attracts the fearful and those foolish enough to believe that they're fearless. It brings out the strong, the weak, the innocent and the corrupt...Fear is my strongest ally. It tells me everything I need to know about a victim."
- —Maul taunts Trade Federation Viceroy Nute Gunray while torturing him[src]
Maul, generally referred to as Lord Maul, was a Zabrak Dark Jedi Master during the Trade Federation Invasion of Utapau. One year earlier, he assisted Federation Viceroy Nute Gunray in assuming full control over the Trade Federation Directorate by organization an assassination of the non-Neimoidian members. During that same year, the Galactic Republic passed a law that said Republic companies could not use slave workers in non-Republic territories, so Maul assisted the outraged Gunray in organization a blockade of Utapau, as the planet’s leadership had been the principal players in the law’s passage.

[edit] Biography
[edit] Early life
Maul was a Zabrak of unknown origins. Sometime during his life, he proclaimed himself to be a Dark Jedi Master. After learning about the Neimoidian Nute Gunray’s promotion to Viceroy of the Trade Federation, Maul contacted Gunray and promised to make him the sole leader of the Federation, as well as unlimited expansion for the Federation’s droid army. Gunray, who wanted full control of the mostly non-Neimoidian Trade Federation Directorate, agreed and the two formed an alliance with one another. One year later, during a summit on Eriadu, Federation battle droids guarding the directorate opened fire on all of the non-Neimoidian directorate members. After only two Neimoidians, including Gunray, remained alive, Maul aided Gunray in selecting Neimoidian puppets to fill the empty seats, thus giving Gunray full control of the Federation.[1]
[edit] Utapau blockade
Over the next year, Utapau Senator Malus Palpatine and the planet’s queen, Sabé Arcadia, created a bill in the Galactic Senate proposing the outlawing of the use of slave workers by Galactic Republic corporations in non-Republic territories. Gunray and the Federation were outraged by the bill’s proposal, but they were even more so after the bill passed on the Senate and became law. Because Gunray wished to find a way to overturn the law, Maul again offered to render his assistance. The two began planning an invasion of a planet in the hopes of forcing the Republic to rescind the law, and they chose Utapau as it had been the primary player in the law’s creation. Shortly thereafter, the Federation moved their blockade forces to Utapau, where Maul oversaw the overall command of the blockade.[1]
After one month of negotiations between Utapau, the Republic and the Federation, Republic Supreme Chancellor Finis Valorum sent two Jedi ambassadors, Jard Dooku and Obi-Wan Kenobi, to Utapau to force the Federation into a settlement agreement. Maul knew that the ambassadors were to be Jedi, but he did not tell Gunray or Gunray’s chief adviser Rune Haako. When the Jedi arrived, Gunray requested orders for how to deal with them, and Maul told Gunray to let them continue on their way. Gunray violated the order and attempted to kill the Jedi, who eventually escaped. Because of the insubordination, Maul had Gunray dragged off the bridge so he could punish the Viceroy later on. Once Gunray was off of the bridge, Maul was contacted by Queen Arcadia, who believed the blockade was over due to the arrival of the ambassadors. Maul claimed to know nothing of any ambassadors so Arcadia ended the transmission, prompting Maul to order the beginning of the invasion.[1]
