Mara Solo Fel was the daughter of Jedi Knights Jaina Solo and Zekk, and the older twin sister of Solan Solo. At the time of her birth, the galaxy began experiencing another major war, which saw the deaths of many Jedi, including her parents and grandparents, and the rise of a new galactic Empire under the control of her estranged uncle, Darth Caedus. Following the massacre at Shedu Maad, Mara, under the belief that her brother was still alive, distanced herself from the Jedi Order, and, eventually, went rogue.

[edit] Biography
[edit] A family divided
Mara Solo was born in 40 ABY to Jaina Solo and Zekk, both prominent Jedi Knights of the New Jedi Order, and was named for her deceased maternal aunt, Mara Jade Skywalker. At that time, the galaxy experienced another major war which saw the succession of planets from the Galactic Alliance. Her uncle, Jacen Solo, had been leading the Alliance against the opposition; however, somewhere along the line, he’d succumbed to the dark side. Unable to bear the thought of letting the galaxy suffer for her brother's horrific actions, Jaina sought out the aid of retired bounty hunter, Boba Fett. When Jaina traveled to Mandalore, Zekk joined her, and so Mara and her younger twin brother Solan were born. Although their birth had been the result of an unplanned pregnancy, both parents gladly welcomed their children into the world, cherishing one of the very few happy moments the war had ever allowed them. However, the event was kept a secret from the rest of the family. The only ones who knew of the twins' existence were Fett and members of his close-knit family.
One month after their birth, her mother left Mandalore to confront her uncle, who had taken up the Sith mantle and renamed himself Darth Caedus. Her father, meanwhile, remained on the planet until he received a transmission from Jagged Fel, urging him to return to the Jedi base on Endor. Despite wanting to wait for the opportune moment to reveal their secret, the situation couldn’t be helped. Zekk gathered Mara and Solan and traveled to the forest moon of Endor.
As they began down the boarding ramp of their ship, Fel, accompanied by her grandparents, Leia and Han Solo, appeared on the landing strip to greet them. They were quite curious about the "bundle" in his hands, but he evaded their quizzical looks and inquired of Jaina. Leia, was the first to speak; she informed him that she had felt what seemed Jaina had died aboard the Anakin Solo, having sacrificed herself during her attempt to redeem Caedus. The news didn't not come as a shock to her father, who had felt her presence in the Force disappear just prior to the call, though, he felt bitter towards himself for letting Jaina face him alone. He was interrupted from his thoughts when Mara and Solan started crying from within the layers of blankets. Fully aware of the eyes on him and his “bundle”, he cautiously slid the blankets from their faces and handed them over to Han and Leia, stating that the twins were their grandchildren. The two, especially Han, were taken aback by the revelation, but, after considering what had happened thus far, allowed themselves to cherish the moment.
Holding onto the twins, Han and Leia led the group to the Jedi base that housed the Master’s Council. There, they found a distraught Luke Skywalker and his young son Ben, as well as the entire council. Skywalker informed the group that with Jaina’s apparent death at the hands of Caedus, he and the other Masters would be forced to take extreme measures to take him down. However, with the Order scattered across the galaxy, the Jedi stood little chance against the Sith Lord and his new apprentice, fallen Jedi Tahiri Veila. Leia and Han, convinced that the man that had once been known as Jacen Solo was truly dead, volunteered to aid Chief of State Niathal in putting an end to Caedus' short-lived reign. Luke, however, refused to take further part in the mission, fearing that he too would fall to the dark side.
Once the preparations were complete, Mara's grandparents set off to face her uncle, leaving her father and Fel to aid in the evacuation of Jedi students to a new Jedi base. After the week-long process, the Jedi Order settled on Shedu Maad, a planet in the Transitory Mists. By that time, the Galactic Alliance faction led by Niathal managed to overcome Darth Caedus at the Battle of Fondor; however, the victory came bittersweet as her grandparents perished during the mission, having been killed by Darth Caedus during the climatic battle.
Nearly a week after their self—imposed exile on Shedu Maad, the Galactic Alliance won the war, defeating the Confederation in the final battle above Roche. Darth Caedus was commended for his efforts and was made the Chief of State of the Alliance. After assuming power, he revealed his true identity to the entire galaxy and reconstructed the entire government. The Alliance soon became a tyrannical authority figure, much like the Empire of the old during the Galactic Civil War. Caedus, determined to rid the galaxy of "scum and villainy", declared the Jedi Order as enemies of the Alliance. The Jedi Order, unable to stop his momentum, disappeared off the map completely and went into hiding on various settlements.
[edit] To have lost
Mara remained in hiding with her family on Shedu Maad, where she spent the first six years of her life. Her childhood was nonexistent outside Shedu Maan; the only people that Mara ever came in contact with were her intermediate family, the droids, C-3PO and R2-D2, and the Jedi. Though she enjoyed their company, Mara deeply missed the presence of her mother, who she only met once as an infant. At night, she often experienced palpable dreams, in which she had conversed with her mother in the familiar setting of the Jedi Temple. Though she felt these "dreams" had some meaning to them, Mara simply chose not to tell her father, who had a hard time coping with her mother’s death. She did, however, confide in Solan, though he dismissed them as "nonsense". When their father was too busy with council meetings, Mara would often drag Solan to their mother’s makeshift grave. There, Mara voiced her wish that she was right there with them, enjoying Shedu Maad's beautiful scenery. Solan, however, remained contemplative; though he didn’t admit it, Mara felt through their twin bond that he was suffering just as much as she was.
After returning from her mother’s grave one dusky afternoon, she experienced yet another vision of her mother, telling her to run. Confused, Mara rushed to catch up with her brother, who had gone on ahead, to him what she had witnessed. As she reached the main road, Mara heard a loud explosive sound coming from the direction of the base. Fearing the worse, she ran towards the commotion and was surprised to find the Jedi base surrounded by black armored stormtroopers. Careful to remain out of sight, Mara crept closer to the vicinity and saw that the stormtroopers were taking the Jedi and the civilians as hostages. However, as she scanned the area, Mara saw no sign of her family. She opened up to the Force and stretched her awareness to them, but it was to no avail, she couldn't detect them anywhere. She did, however, feel an unfamiliar presence nearby; the presence was unlike anything she had felt before—it was frightening and full of anger. Mara quickly closed the connection and ran deeper into the forests, hoping that the presence she had felt did not sense her. She came to a halt near a stream, however, she ultimately decided against resting there, afraid that she'd be captured and imprisoned like the others. As she ambled down the forest's rocky road, Mara was suddenly grabbed from behind; she tried to wiggle her way free, but, after seeing that it was her father, ceased. Solan and Ben appeared from behind him and rushed to give her an insufferable embrace. Their father, however, remained stern and advised the children to stay out of sight while he and the other Masters dealt with the intruders. The children did as they were told and stayed behind in the forest, where they waited for their father’s return.
While they were waiting in the forest, Solan revealed to Mara what had their father had told him, that someone within their circle had betrayed their location to Darth Caedus. As soon as she heard the name, Mara recalled the vision of her mother telling her to run, and surmised that it was related to their present situation. She began to tell Solan and Ben what she had witness in the vision, and, to her surprise, Solan stood still and alert. Without saying one word, he took Mara by the arm and led her towards the direction of the base, claiming that they had to warn their father and the other Jedi Masters before they fell into a trap. However, they were stopped by Ben, who was rather determined to obey their father's command. The older boy started to argue against the idea, but stopped after realizing that something was amiss about the area. He brandished his lightsaber and advised the two to follow him; the children obliged and clung onto to Skywalker as he started down a winding path. Although they were less attuned to the Force than Ben was, both Mara and Solan perceived that there were enemies nearby.
As they continued further down the trail, Mara couldn’t help but feel their presence getting closer to their location. Mara tugged at Ben’s sleeve to tell warn him of the imminent danger, though, he seemed to know what she had been fixing to tell him. He bent lower to face Mara and Solan, and told them that everything was going to be okay now that they were close to the location of hidden shelter, which housed both Padawans and Knights alike. Puzzled, Mara inquired of the shelter and how it managed to remain hidden for a long period of time. Ben explained that it was never really hidden to begin with—like the main base, the Sith were bound to discover the location of the shelter soon enough. Darth Caedus only attacked the main base to spite his father, who had been neglecting to face him in battle. After the explanation, Skywalker pulled out his datapad and handed it over to Mara, stating if they were to get lost along the way, they could use it as a guide.
Along the way, the three were ambushed by Caedus’ apprentice, Veila, and a pair of G.A.G troopers, who had been performing a sweep of the area. Knowing that Veila was after the twins, Ben ordered the children to go on without him. Veila, however, refused to let the children get away; she ordered her troopers to locate and capture the children while she dealt with Skywalker. Fully aware that they were being followed, the two picked up their pace, hoping to make to the shelter before sunrise. The odds were against them, however; the stormtroopers managed to catch up to them faster than they thought, cornering them. Solan released himself from her grip and advised Mara to run away while he created a distraction. Mara was rather reluctant to leave her brother behind, but she knew her protests wouldn’t change his mind as he was just as stubborn as their father. As she started down a winding path, Mara sent a telepathic message to Solan, wishing him luck and to catch up with her at the shelter.
Utilizing the datapad that Ben gave her, Mara managed to locate the hidden shelter, though she collapsed from dehydration upon finding it. She was taken in by Jedi Master Dania Garrett, who had been put in charge of the shelter, and immediately treated. Mara awoke to find Garrett looming over her as she the older woman began to check her vital signs. She started to protest and informed the Jedi Master that her brother and older cousin were still outside, fending off the intruders. Though she expressed great sympathy for the young girl, Garrett refused to further prolong their stay at the shelter, which would soon come under attack by Darth Caedus. After finishing her medical examination, Mara followed Garrett to the shelter's hangar bay, which housed the New Jedi Order's newest ship, the Endeavor.
Mara, along with the other Padawans, was guided onboard by the older, more experienced Jedi; like her, they found the entire experience to be disconcerting, though, their faces betrayed no expression. She was interrupted from her thoughts as her guide, a woman named Seha Dorvald, ushered her down the corridors and into a grandiose passenger compartment. There, Mara found a seat next to the viewport and strapped herself to her seat, which was much larger than she was. Though it looked quite remarkable on the outside, the interior of the ship was less appealing; despite occasional fowl smells from her seat every so often, Mara clamped down the urge to unbuckle her crashwebbing and run off the ship. She more focused on finding her brother and father, who were still in the forest. With each passing second, Mara grew more and more worried. Unable to convince the proctors to let her off the ship, Mara remained in her seat, and watched as the Endeavor began its ascent, leaving the planet to be pillaged by the Galactic Alliance. Mara kept her eyes on the viewport, hoping that her father and Solan had made it off the planet in time.
[edit] The ties that bond
In the weeks following the massacre at Shedu Maad, remnants of the Jedi Order and the Galactic Alliance gathered at the Jedi Praxeum on the planet of Dathomir, where the Master's Council held their first Jedi Conclave since the resolution of the Swarm War. After meeting Masters Streen and Kirana Ti, Mara joined her fellow Padawans in the crowd as the Master's Council presented their arguments to their attentive audience. Mara, however, found her attention divided, as she began focusing on the people in the crowd. She began to open up to the Force once more; stretching awareness as far as her untrained senses had allowed it to. Mara felt a rush of emotions, some pleasant and some not so much, though she paid it no mind and concentrated even harder. However, a light tap of the shoulder disrupted her concentration and she came out of her trance. She was surprised to see that it had been Ben, clad in brown and tan robes, bearing scratches and bruises from his duel with Tahiri. He gestured for Mara follow him; though she was disinterested in conducting a conversation, Mara felt inclined to follow.
They walked past the indistinguishable corridors and into a rather large room, which Mara assumed to be a meditation chamber. Releasing his grip on Mara, Ben knelt down on his knee and cupped her face in his palms. As he did so, Mara abruptly wiped the tears from her face, not wanting him to see how vulnerable and insecure she was. Risking a glance, she started to say something, though, the most she could utter was a hoarse, inaudible whisper. Coming onto his feet, Ben gently hoisted the girl onto a large round seat and lifted her head to meet his gaze. Mara surmised that he was fixing to tell her what she had already suspected—that her father and Solan had seemingly perished alongside the rest of the Jedi who were unfortunate to die by Caedus' blade during the onslaught. As much as she tried to keep her composure, Mara, upon realizing this, could no longer mask her sadness and broke into uncontrollable tears.
As the Jedi Conclave came to an end, Mara and Ben returned to their respective dorms. Having been worn out by the long, eventful day, Mara trudged slowly past the fussy members of the Bantha Clan, with whom she had been coercively grouped with, to her kempt and lavishly decorated room. There, she traded her Jedi robes for more appropriate night attire and headed straight to bed. However, later that night, Mara was awoken from her deep slumber by what appeared to be a light tap on the head. Believing it to be some sort of a prank conjured up by one of the Banthas, she climbed out of her bed and started down a narrow corridor, half-expecting to hear the laughter of two little five year olds who had forsaken sleep to wreak havoc on their unsuspecting prey; however, she was unable to detect anything of the sort. She rounded a corner and found herself in the common room, an area favored by the older academy students. Neglecting the seats by the entrance, Mara walked towards the window, entranced by the beauty of Dathomir's four moons. Reveling in the beautiful sight, Mara let her mind wander, hoping that the soothing sight would help her relax. After calming her nerves, she focused her attention on the familiar presence; judging from the childlike aura emitted from it, Mara surmised that it had been Solan, who was likely captured by the Sith during the massacre. However, she didn't dare return the touch, for a fear that she might attract some unwanted attention.
With newfound hope, Mara stalked quietly down the corridor and into her room, where she began to plot her next course of action. She knew very well that Ben and the other Jedi were highly unlikely to believe her claim, and would only dismiss it as pure speculation. Mara ran through her list of other potential candidates, but, after reconsidering the situation, came to conclusion that she would have to be the one to locate and rescue her twin. After gathering her belongings, Mara departed from her room, however not before leaving behind a goodbye note for Ben. She made her way down to the hangar bay, hoping to find at least one active transport. Luckily for her, a cargo pilot had been in the vicinity finishing up the last of his rounds. Keeping her eyes on the pilot, Mara quietly crept behind a stack of crates, and began contemplating different methods on how best to enter the ship unnoticed. Since there were was only one way to get onto the ship, Mara surmised that she needed a distraction; thinking quickly, Mara reached into her backpack and pulled out a little stuffed tantaun that her father had given her for her sixth birthday, and hurtled it at the pilot as he trudged up the boarding ramp. The pilot quickly ran down the ramp and called for the persons responsible to reveal themselves. Mara, however, ignored his threat and began using her powers to make the stuffed tantaun “come to life”. She moved the tantaun across the room and into the corridors, while the pilot kept pursuit, clearly annoyed by her little stunt. Once the area was clear, Mara grabbed her backpack and boarded the ship. She managed to locate a small compartment within the interior and remained there.
As the pilot started the engines, Mara sat in the shadows, pondering whether or not her decision had been justified; though the thought of running away terrified Mara, her lingering guilt for leaving her brother behind weighed heavily on her heart. Curling into a fetal position, Mara allowed herself to relax and drifted into a deep sleep. After a few hours of rest, Mara awoke to find herself in the company of the cargo pilot. She sat herself upright and asked the man if he was planning to take her back to the base, afraid of facing the repercussions for her rash action. The man only waived off her concerns, however, and introduced himself as Iago Hart. Mara noted that his demeanor was entirely different than it was before but shook his offered hand anyway, relieved that he was not planning to bring her back Dathomir. The two then went into a lengthy discussion, with each telling the other about their experiences and greatest aspirations.
After their conversation, Hart informed Mara that the ship had come out of hyperspace, and gestured for her to follow him to the cockpit; she obliged and strapped herself to the copilot's seat as he took the controls. Mara watched as the planet came into view, feeling the ship jink as Hart initiated its landing cycle. Once they touched the surface, Mara, fascinated by the enticing scenery, inquired of the planet that they were on. Hart told her that they were on his homeworld, Bespin, a planet known for its massive production of tibanna gas and luxurious casinos. He went on to explain that he had some important business to take care of, and, sensing her growing discomfort, gently advised the young girl to remain patient. Mara reluctantly followed Hart through the bustling spaceport and into the heart of Cloud City. They made their way to a large building complex; as they came to a stop in front of the entrance, Hart informed Mara that he would enter the building alone as the office environment didn't tolerate the presence of children. After promising that she'll remain on her best behavior, Hart entered the building. In the meantime, Mara waited by the gardens, watching the crowd rush by as they traveled to their destinations.
After an hour of waiting, Mara decided to search for Hart, no longer regarding the promise that she had made to him earlier. She entered the building and approached the security desk; perching herself on the counter, Mara asked the guard if he'd seen Hart around the building. The guard, a stubby Ugnaught, bluntly told her that Hart had left sometime prior to her arrival and called for another security to guard to escort her off of the property. However, before the security guard could act, Mara ran out of the building. She roamed the streets aimlessly as she tried to come to terms with Hart's abandonment, though, the more she thought about, the bitterer she became. His stunt did, however, teach her a valuable lesson about trust. She came to the conclusion that the only person she could trust was herself, and became more determined than ever to rescue her brother on her own—without any outside help. Mara returned to the outskirts of the city, and, upon finding the spaceport, boarded a transport headed for the Galactic Core.
[edit] Solace
For the past eight years, Mara found herself jumping from ship to ship, often posing as a cabin boy in order to avoid detection by the Galactic Alliance Guard, who had become the galaxy's primary law enforcement organization. From her voyages aboard various starships, she had seen first-hand the ruthlessness of their conduct and their total disregard for denizens' safety—a fact that Mara found to be entirely ironic, considering their main priority was to protect the citizens, not use their authority to take advantage. However, even with her abilities, she was unable to help them, for a fear that she would be executed along with the rest of the Jedi who had managed to survive her uncle’s scourge.
One day, while attempting to sneak aboard a refugee ship at a Corellian spaceport, Mara stumbled across a struggle between a G.A.G trooper and a young woman who appeared a few years older than herself. Without any forethought, she rushed to woman's aid as the trooper began to overpower the girl, and attempted to fend him off. However, the soldier, well-versed in hand-to-hand combat, fought off her feeble attacks and countered with his own, knocking her onto the ground. As he was about to deliver another blow, Mara reacted with an instinctive force-push, sending the soldier flying into the hull of the ship. The woman, unscathed by the attack, appeared by her side and helped her onto her feet, though, before she could tend to Mara's wounds, the two were forced to flee the docking bay when the injured soldier managed to send out a distress signal, calling for immediate backup. The two managed to avoid the fray of soldiers, though they had separated during the process.
Despite the painful ache in her ankle, Mara kept running, hoping to evade the G.A.G squad entirely. While taking a detour through an abandoned street, she collided with a male civilian, who had been monitoring the situation. Noticing the bad wounds on her hand and ankle, the civilian proceeded to ask her what had happened, however, before she could respond, two G.A.G stormtroopers appeared, demanding that the man relinquish Mara to them. The man refused to obey their orders and revealed to the group that he was a high-ranking law enforcement officer, much to theirs and Mara's dismay. He then went to explain that the Guard had no right to interfere with his base of operations, and warned them that their actions would bring about dire consequences. To her surprise, the soldiers heeded his warning and agreed to a retreat. When they were gone, Mara bluntly inquired of the man's motives, believing the stranger to be one of Darth Caedus' lackeys. The man could only say that he was an ally of hers, however, and introduced himself as Major Armin Telfur of CorSec. After a moment of uncomfortable silence, Armin offered to house Mara at his apartment in Tyrena until her injuries fully healed; she reluctantly accepted his offer, though made it very clear that she was still distrusting of him. The two then made their way to his speeder, got in, and drove off.
After an hour-long drive, Mara and Armin arrived at his apartment, and, upon entry, were greeted by his wife, Lucenda. Once he relayed the story to her, Lucenda quickly ushered Mara into the kitchen and immediately tended her injuries, using an emergency kit she had found in Armin's office. Mara was initially hesitant against the idea of letting Lucenda treat her wounds, but, after the older woman revealed that she was an experienced doctor, followed through with it. In short order, her injuries were bandaged and she was set to make a full recovery in a week's time. Immediately after hearing that Mara was going to be alright, Armin left the apartment, stating that he'd received a transmission from his superior, urging him to return to headquarters. In the meantime, Mara and Lucenda engaged in a lengthy conversation, while getting acquainted with one another—though she had been careful not to reveal her Jedi heritage.
That evening during dinner, Mara met the couple's two teenage children, Dana and Xander; they were somewhat flustered by her sudden appearance in their home, though, judging by the dazed look that he'd given her, Mara perceived that Xander had took a liking to her. For the duration of the dinner, she remained utterly aloof to the familial setting, only smiling when a comment was directed at her. After the dinner, she quickly returned to her designated room and attempted to get some much needed rest. However, Mara found relaxation difficult as she was overcome with somber visions, in which she had been taunted by a dark apparition of her brother. She awoke shortly thereafter to find Xander towering over her in awed silence. While she was grateful that he had bothered to check up on her, Mara angrily suggested that stalking her would not guarantee him a date. Xander retorted that he had been woken out of bed by her audible murmurs, fearing that something was wrong. He then urged Mara to discuss her dream, claiming that she'd been talking nonstop in her sleep. However, Mara was unwilling to divulge any details to the latter and told him to drop the topic and return to bed. She sensed that he was deeply saddened by her cold response, but was too frustrated to care.
Unable to get a decent amount of sleep, Mara awoke early the next morning and ventured into the terrace to be alone. While striding down the garden, Mara caught a glimpse of Xander and, feeling guilty for snapping at him that night, headed in his direction. She found him skipping pebbles near a large fountain and eagerly joined him, hoping that her presence would spark a conversation between the two. When that plan failed, however, Mara went blocked his view and blurted out an apology. As she turned to leave, she felt herself trip over a rough object and instantly fell into the fountain. She managed to pull herself out of the fountain and found Xander bursting into crude laughter, which made her flush even more. He stopped laughing long enough to tell her that they were now even, and offered her a helping hand. Despite being embarrassed about the situation, Mara couldn't help but laugh at her own clumsiness. She readily took his hand and allowed him to take her back to the apartment to change her clothes and bandages. During the walk, the two happened to discuss their interests and other embarrassing moments, forming a sibling-like bond in the process.
[edit] Back into the fold
- "Alright, I'll help you out just this once. I do hope you realize that you can't run away from your problems forever, but what ever you decide to do, always remember that your actions affect the people around you."
- —Armin Telfur imparting some advice to Mara
After a short walk back the apartment, Mara and Xander were greeted by Armin, who had requested a moment of her time. Both took the request as an indication that the matter was to be discussed between herself and the older Telfur; though Mara didn't like the idea of Xander leaving her side, she gestured for him to leave them alone. Once he was gone, Telfur informed Mara that he'd been looking into the incident that involved herself and a couple of Galactic Alliance soldiers and discovered that the Guard had placed a bounty on her head. She was taken aback by the discovery and, realizing that her identity had been discovered, urged Telfur to help her escape. He agreed to help her, however only this one time.
