Mamphra was a core world, the fourth planet in the Mamphra system and a major trading port during the Galactic Republic.

[edit] Early Republic

One of the Core Founders of the Galactic Republic, Mamphra began as a monarchy yet the blantant corruption kings of Mamphra saw them deposed and a republic was formed. The Mamphran Senate, formerly an advisory body, formed the main legislative body of the government. Later years saw the election of the Consuls of Mamphra: the Second Consuls who were elected to government the cities of Mamphra and the First Cosnul, who resided in the Stateship as were not affiliated to any particular city.

Due to it's strategic location, where the hyperspace route the Corellian Run intersects with the Hydrian Way, Mamohra was a major trading port throughout the history of the Republic. The planet was also known for the high quality of the starships it produced, a reputation that was only added to by the reputed invincibility of the Mamphran Navy.

[edit] Secession Crisis and Clone Wars

Amid loud protests and surprise, Mamphra withdrew from the Republic in 22 BBY during the Secession Crisis due to pressure from the Mamphran Senate. However, it never did become part of the Confederacy of Independent Systems, despite the efforts made to bring it over to the Seperatist cause. Mamphra was neutral during the Clone Wars and used its navy for defensive purposes, yet there were cases of ships assisted either side, unbeknownst to the government until afterwards (where the perosns involved would usually be reprimanded). The planet was also nominated to be the site of the discussions between the Seperatist and Republic forces, yet there was a blantant refusal by the Mamphran Senate and Avingnon was chosen instead.

[edit] Society and Culture

Mamphran government is an elected democacy comprising of the Mamphran Senate as the legislative branch and the Consuls as the executive. The Senate is elected by popular vote, sufferage can be granted to naturalised Mamphrans, though only those Mamphran born can stand for office. Only those who have served as Senators may stand for the position of consul, and while the Second Consul is elected by the Senators affiliated with that partoicular city, the First Consul is elected by popular vote. Due to the Mamphrans aversion to monarchs, consuls are not aloud to remain in office longer than their term limits (although some First Consuls have tried to revoke this). This may explain why Mamphra left the Republic when it did, after Supreme Chancellor Palpatine's term was extended.

Aside from the starships, Mamphra is known for its crafts (particularly glass making) and literature. It is also said , though mostly by Mamphrans, that the first actor to grace a stage in a Republic world was a Mamphran.

• Mamphra was based along the lines of Republican and Imperial Rome, much of the dress as well as names have Roman influences though its people's history as staunch supporters of democracy is more reminiscent of Classical Greece.
• The Mamphran crest and the acronym SPQM is of course derrived from Rome's SPQR: the Senate and the people of Rome.
