"How can we trust you when you've already gone around normal procedures and carried out a reckless mission without consulting us first?"
Rana Quemin to Mace about his unauthorized trip to Kamino.[src]

Mace Windy was a Human Jedi Master, revered by most within the Jedi Order although distrusted by some others, who sat on the Jedi High Council during the Invasion of Utapau. At the time of his appointment, he was the youngest person in the history of the Jedi Order to sit upon the Jedi High Council. Trained by T'ra Saa after being born on Haruun Kal, during which time he discovered he had the ability to detect shatterpoints in the Force, he was also the master of Padmé Naberrie, referring to her on many occasions as the best student he had ever trained, although it was unknown how many students he had trained prior to accepting her.

One week after hearing reports about a Kaminoan-created clone army to be used against the Galactic Republic, Mace traveled to Kamino where he learned that the army was to be used for the Republic, not against it. He also uncovered what were mysteries to him about the supposed Jedi Master Sido-Dyas who was said to have ordered the clones, and a possible Mandalorian leader named Jango Fett, the latter of whom had been the host for the clones. Mace flew to Nar Shaddaa to find Fett, and questioned him in Fett's office once the suspect was located. After a brief fight in the streets, Mace arrested Fett and brought him to Coruscant, where Mace lost control of his emotions while interrogating Fett about the army and the Mandalorians. Fett later escaped from the Jedi Temple, causing Mace to issue an immediate lock down of the surrounding areas.

[edit] Biography

[edit] Early life

As an infant, Mace is taken by the Jedi Order after the death of his parents.

Mace Windy was born on the planet Haruun Kal fifty years before the Invasion of Utapau. After his parents died when he was six months old, Mace was turned over to the custody of the Jedi Order, where he was taken in as a youngling at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. While he was a youngling, Mace was trained by Jedi Master Yoda in the basics of the Force, such as core Force powers and early lightsaber skills. Throughout his childhood, he held no memories of his home planet or his family, which he later recounted as making it easier for him to live in the Jedi Order due to the Jedi emphasis on a lack of attachments.[1]

When Mace was thirteen years old, he became the Padawan of Jedi Master T'ra Saa. During his training, he became aware of his seemingly rare ability to detect shatterpoints, a Force ability that allowed a user to detect actions that could supposedly alter destiny. With this ability, he was able to glimpse parts of the future, including the building of his violet-colored lightsaber that he built sometime thereafter.[1]

After facing his Jedi Trials and becoming a Jedi Knight, Mace began working on a combat form called Vaapad, which was an alteration of the seventh lightsaber combat form, Juyo. He sometimes found it difficult to find a balance between the light side and the dark side of the Force, as the form required him to enjoy battle and find winning to be thrilling. During the early days of his practices with the form, Mace was sent on a mission with Jedi Master Rana Quemin to settle a territorial dispute on New Holstice, where two neighboring cities were threatening to begin what could have become a small war. They spent many days attempting to negotiate between the two sides, although they were not able to accomplish anything.[2]

After spending several days on New Holstice, Mace and Quemin discovered that the situation was being manipulated by an unknown Dark Jedi. While the Dark Jedi’s reasons for playing both sides were unknown to them, Mace and Quemin were able to track him down, though the Dark Jedi attacked him. Mace tried to use Vaapad against the Dark Jedi, and he later noted that he became cocky during the duel and used too much anger and rage. The Dark Jedi nearly exploited this, though Quemin was able to help Mace keep from falling to the dark side. Shortly thereafter, the two Jedi were able to run the Dark Jedi off of the planet and end the conflict, though Quemin never fully trusted Mace or his judgment after the event.[2]

Because of his abilities, Mace was appointed to the Jedi High Council at the age of twenty-eight standard years, making him the youngest Jedi to ever sit on the council. He also sat on the Jedi Council with Yoda and, later, Ki-Adi Mundi. Mace frequently sparred with Mundi and never lost a match.[1]

In 40 BBY, Mace was sent to Ultaar in an attempt to end a civil war that had broken out on the planet after the bombing of the planet's capital. While he was in a shelter, he found an orphaned baby named Padmé Naberrie and realized that she was Force-sensitive. When Mace left the planet, he brought Padmé with him to Coruscant and had her placed into the care of the Jedi Order as a youngling. Twelve years later, Mace took Padmé as his Jedi Padawan.[3]

[edit] Clone investigation

Shortly before the Invasion of Utapau, Mace began to hear rumors from the Galactic Senate that referred to a planet called Kamino that was developing a clone army to use against the Republic, although he did not have anymore information than the limited amount the Jedi Archives provided for him. Shortly thereafter, Mace traveled with Ki-Adi Mundi and Yoda on a mission to Ansion aboard the Jedi flagship Chu'unthor. After a sparring match with Mundi on the return trip to Coruscant, Mace spoke with Yoda about the cloners on Kamino and Mace agreed with Yoda when Yoda said that the matter needed to be investigated. In order to speed up the process, Mace chose to travel to Kamino, with Yoda’s blessing though without the approval of the Jedi Council, in the hopes of finding the truth about the rumors.[1]

Two days later, Mace arrived on Kamino and was brought before Kaminoan Supreme Leader Lama Su. Lama Su told him that he was expecting Mace and that he believed Mace was the Jedi Master Sido-Dyas. Mace informed him that there was no one in the Jedi Order by that name, leading to curiosity between the two. After a few minutes, Lama Su informed Mace that five hundred thousand clone units were ready with two million more still being created for the army that was to be used for the Republic, not against it. When Mace learned of this, he stepped back out of the facility and went to his starfighter where he sent Yoda and Ki-Adi a progress report on the situation.[4]

Kaminoan ruler Lama Su escorts Mace through the main clone military complex.

When Mace returned to the facility, Lama Su gave him a tour of the entire cloning and military training facility. During the tour, he learned how the clones were created, particularly about their growth acceleration, and why the Kaminoans began cloning experiments to begin with. Mace was somewhat disturbed by the revelation that Jango Fett, a person Mace assumed was a Mandalorian due to his surname, was the host of the clone soldiers. Shortly thereafter, Mace was able to see the clones during the training exercises on a vast parade field.[4]

Upon leaving the facility once again, Mace went back to his starfighter where he contacted Yoda and Ki-Adi again to give them another progress report. He informed them about how the army was to be used for the Republic rather than against it, as well as the supposed mysteries surrounding Sido-Dyas and Jango Fett. Yoda ordered him to find Fett, as they both knew the Republic would be in danger if the Mandalorians were involved. When the transmission ended, Mace returned to the Supreme Ruler to obtain a genetic readout of the clones in order to be able to confirm Jango Fett’s identity if and when he found him.[4] Before leaving Kamino, Mace was able to use the Kaminoan computer systems to learn that Fett had traveled to Nar Shaddaa.[5]

[edit] Interrogations

Nearly twenty-four hours later, Mace arrived on Nar Shaddaa and enlisted the help of a young criminal named Lannik Racto by offering him one hundred credits if he could help find Fett. Racto was able to provide Mace with the information, leading him to the offices of the Fett Consortium. Mace introduced himself to the secretary, Reelo Baruk, as being Aay Zavos, who was actually an obese and red-haired Republic diplomat. Using a Force mind trick, Mace gained entry into Fett’s office, where the two began talking about the clones. Mace questioned him on Sido-Dyas, though Fett claimed that he had actually been recruited by a man called Nightblade.[5]

Fett, in full body armor, attacks Mace on Nar Shaddaa before Mace is able to arrest him and bring him to Coruscant.

After Fett left for what he said was another appointment, Mace witnessed him fleeing the area, so he took off after Fett on foot. They engaged in a fight where Fett had the advantage of flight with his jetpack, although Mace was able to apprehend him after members of the Coruscant Security Force, led by Commander Reylan Aadaeil, arrived under orders to assist with the arrest. Shortly thereafter, Fett was loaded into a transport headed for Coruscant, and as they were taking off Mace noticed Baruk running into a back alley, which worried him considering he did not know what Baruk was going to attempt.[5]

Once he was back on Coruscant, Mace had Fett placed into a Force cage in the Jedi Temple prison wing. Mace then attended a meeting of the Jedi High Council, where Quemin chastised him for not consulting the Council before going to Kamino, although Mace argued that what he did was in the best interest of the Republic. The topic was placed on hold when Jedi Master Jard Dooku and Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi came before them, during which time Obi-Wan reported that he had been attacked by a Sith Lord on Tatooine. Mace was skeptical of the claim, as the Sith had been reported extinct for one thousand years, but what came as a much larger surprise to Mace was Obi-Wan's belief that a young man named Annikin Skywalker would fulfill the Prophecy of the Chosen One, which stated that a savior would bring balance to the Force. Although unsure about the claim, Mace and the rest of the Council agreed to test Annikin to see if he could be accepted for Jedi training.[6]

After the meeting, and despite his protests, Mace went with Master Quemin to the prison wing to question Jango about his involvement with the Mandalorians. When they arrived, Mace found Commander Aadaeil there along with fellow Coruscant Security Force officer Vendere Dashin, both of whom told Mace that the hierarchy in the Coruscant Security Force considered all information about the Mandalorians and all possible threats regarding them to be credible. Upon hearing their report, Mace began to question Jango in the nearby interrogation room, though Jango did not answer his questions. Mace became frustrated when Jango began to purposely taunt him, and that frustration eventually turned to anger when Jango compared the Jedi to Dark Jedi and the Sith. Mace detected what he felt was a shatterpoint surrounding Jango, so after leaving the interrogation room and being chided by Quemin, Mace left to mediate in his quarters.[2]

Mace, in his quarters, contemplates his uncontrolled actions hours after the interrogation of Jango Fett.

Instead of meditating, Mace decided to train all day, hoping to keep his mind off of what happened. That night, after realizing that his efforts to distract himself were unsuccessful, he returned to his quarters where Yoda soon joined him. Yoda knew what had happened during the interrogation and calmly lectured Mace on what he said was the importance of maintaining control, although their discussion was interrupted when Aadaeil contacted him and reported that Fett had escaped from the prison wing, leading Mace to rush down to find the fugitive.[7]

[edit] Personality and traits

Throughout the Jedi Order, Mace was revered as a Jedi Master, which in turn caused him to always remain cognizant of that fact in an effort to maintain his stature within the Jedi Order. In public, he was known as a good friend, one example being his training duels with Ki-Adi Mundi where, instead of gloating about his constant winning, Mace would assure Ki-Adi that Ki-Adi’s skills would continue to improve.[1] Mace was also respected by his apprentice, Padmé Naberrie, for being what she felt was a warm and competent teacher,[7] although she did not agree with his teachings on love and personal attachments.[3] His method of teaching her later caused Yoda to remark that Padmé would become a great Jedi, which did fill Mace with a degree of satisfaction, as well as what he felt could be considered “fatherly” pride.[1]

Mace listens as fellow Council members lecture him for his unauthorized investigations.

Mace had a sense of duty not only directed towards the Jedi Order, but towards the Galactic Republic as a whole. Although he knew he should have consulted the Jedi Council before traveling to Kamino to investigate the clone army that was being created there, he instead decided to avoid what he believed would be a days-long debate and travel without authorization. When he was being questioned by the Jedi Council for the breach in protocol, Mace defended his actions by saying what he did was for the good of the entire Republic, although Rana Quemin remarked that it was difficult for them to trust his word because of his unauthorized act.[6]

Despite trying to maintain a balance between the light side and dark side of the Force that he was required to use for his lightsaber form Vaapad, there were infrequent instances when he lost control. The first was when he was a young Jedi Knight on New Holstice when he was fighting the Dark Jedi responsible for nearly igniting a planetary civil war, although there was not another reported instance until his interrogation of Jango Fett at the Jedi Temple. This caused some tension between Mace and other Jedi Masters, although he continued to remain on the Jedi High Council.[2]

The reason Mace lost control on the two occasions was due to Vaapad requiring him to border the light side and dark side of the Force, as well as the fact that he was required to enjoy battles that he took part in. This helped cause a struggle between the light side and the dark side within him, although he did attempt to master and concentrate fully on the light side to little avail.[2]

[edit] Powers and abilities

As a Jedi Master, Mace had a mastery over many Force powers as well as the Force itself, leading him to have been deemed capable enough to be granted a seat on the Jedi High Council. He was the youngest person ever appointed to the Council, leading many to note that it reflected highly upon his skills and abilities as a Jedi. He was also a teacher to many Jedi, although the only known apprentice he trained was Padmé Naberrie. Yoda indirectly noted Mace’s skills as a teacher by praising Padmé’s accomplishments, expressing his belief that Padmé would one day be a great Jedi.[1]

Mace was referred to as having been a competent duelist, his unorthodox purple-bladed lightsaber drawing the attention of many Jedi when he first constructed it. He was victorious over Ki-Adi Mundi in each sparring session they had with one another, although he used orthodox lightsaber combat forms during such occasions.[1] When not sparring against another Jedi, Mace practiced with his self-created form of Vaapad, a modification of the form Juyo. Despite his decades of work, he still often times found it difficult to balance himself in his required bordering of the light side and dark side of the Force, although he only lost control on New Holstice and against Jango Fett.[2]

[edit] Behind the scenes

[edit] Development

Star Wars Fanon has a collection of images related to Mace Windy.

Mace Windy was created as an Alternative Star Wars Saga version of the canon Mace Windu when author Brandon Rhea began work on Star Wars: Episode I - The Chosen One. He selected the name Mace Windy rather than the canon name as he not only liked the name better, but also because it was the original name found in the original drafts of The Star Wars. One of the first lines for the Star Wars Saga ever written spoke about how it was the story of Mace Windy, who was a revered Jedi Bendu of Ophuchi. The story was told by C.J. Thorpe, “padawaan learner to the famed Jedi”.[8]

One decision Rhea made when writing the character was that he would not make it a supposedly cliché Samuel L. Jackson, Pulp Fiction-type character. He also decided to add more depth into Windy, particularly in regards to the lightsaber form of Vaapad. One criticism Rhea had of the canon Mace Windu was that there was not enough depth in the character in terms of how Vaapad forced a user to border on the light side and the dark side of the Force, along with the fact that it caused a user to enjoy battle.[9] Rhea felt that this should cause what he felt considered to be a more realistic and evident struggle between the two sides of the Force.[10]

A test image of Mace Windy in the now-canceled film titled The Chosen One: The Animated Movie.

The Star Wars canon suggests that the reason Mace Windu prevented him from falling to the dark side or having a more evident struggle was his “mastery and concentration of the light side”.[9] Rhea felt that this was written just to “explain away why Mace was not falling to the dark side” rather than for any actual character development. This contributed to Rhea’s decision to create what will supposedly be a more obvious struggle between the two sides.[10] The struggle has already been shown briefly in the interrogation scene between Mace Windy and Jango Fett in The Chosen One.[2]

Along with all other characters in The Chosen One, Mace was set to appear in the now-canceled film called The Chosen One: The Animated Movie which was to be based on the novel. Unlike other characters, aside from Annikin Skywalker, test images of Mace were developed in animated form, and there were four of him in total. Animation tests were also conducted on Mace. In these tests, Mace was sitting in a Jedi High Council chair, although he was shown as a hologram. This was done to test the abilities of the designer in creating holograms as well as characters.

[edit] Reception

The decision to create a more evident struggle between the light side and the dark side in the character has been met with both praise and criticism. Matthew Tarrant, a Role-Play Administrator and veteran role-player on TheStarWarsRP.Com, believed the decision was a good one. Tarrant said that, “Mace Windy is very much like the Mace...in Shatterpoint but seems to focus more on his emotional turmoil that I don’t feel is touched on as much as it should be in Shatterpoint or the movies”. Tarrant also said it was a “very Jedi problem done in a great way” in The Chosen One.[11] Other readers, while not remarking on Mace Windy specifically, did show a positive reaction to the scenes where this plot element is shown.

Others, however, did not approve of the change. Andrew Barton, a Star Wars Administrator, stated that he did not “like the conflict [Rhea] added to Mace Wind[y]’s character”.[10] Atarumaster88, a Decreton Lord on Star Wars Fanon and a Wookieepedia Administrator, stated that along with “the ‘u’ from his last name”, “Mace lost his coolness” in the Alternative Saga. Atarumaster88 also stated that “he’s nothing like Mace Windu from, say, Shatterpoint or Episode III, or several of the comics in which he appears”. Rhea responded to both by stating his intentions for the character.[12]
