- "This was the formal weapon of a Jedi Knight. Not as clumsy or random as a blaster. More skill than simple sight was required for its use. An elegant weapon. It was a symbol as well. Anyone can use a blaster or a fusioncutter—but to use a lightsaber well was a mark of someone a cut above the ordinary."
- —Obi-Wan Kenobi[src]
Designed as much for elegance in combat as for ceremony, the lightsaber was a distinctive weapon, the very image of which was inextricably bound with the mythos of the Jedi and the Sith.
It was a blade of pure energy emitted from a hilt most often crafted by the wielder to match their own needs, preferences, and style. Because of the unique balance of the saber, with all its weight in the hilt, and a strong gyroscopic effect it was very difficult for the untrained to wield. In the hands of an expert in tune with the Force, such as the Jedi or their fallen brethren, the Sith, the lightsaber was a weapon to be greatly respected, even feared. To wield a lightsaber was to demonstrate incredible skill and confidence, as well as masterful dexterity and atonement to the Force.
Through the millennia of their use, the lightsaber became synonymous with the Jedi and their values to uphold peace and justice throughout the galaxy. This perception endured despite the many early conflicts with Sith and Dark Jedi who also wielded what the general populace often called laser swords.

[edit] Hilt types
There were numerous types of hilts available to those who constructed lightsabers throughout time. The standard single-bladed lightsaber was the most common, with only the crystal color and hilt design varying. Another, less common type was the double-bladed lightsaber, that had a longer hilt with one bladed extending from each side. Like with a standard saber, the crystal color and hilt design varied. Another lightsaber hilt available was known as the "U-bladed" lightsaber, which was essentially a double-bladed lightsaber with a curved lightsaber hilt. Lastly, there was the lightsaber cane, which was a long, cane-like hilt that only protruded one blade.
[edit] Individual lightsabers
[edit] Darth Deus
Specifically, Deus wielded the traditional Lightsabers of the Jedi and the Sith however upon being apointed as Darth Deus to be Supreme Commander of the Separatist Fleet he made his own custom Lightsaber that had a Long-Handle (enough so that it can be wielded with two hands) with Cortosis and Phrik spine guards on both the bottom and the top, the blade was a Black blade and in actuality was twice the length of a normal Lightsaber that could be lengthened even more or shortened by a hidden Dual-Phase switch.
[edit] Nathaniel Kenobi Solo
Originally, Nathan wielded two cyan lightsabers—a family heirloom—but after Darth Mutatos destroyed them during the Mission to Korriban, he created new ones with two distinct crystals.
One of them was white and the other black. They each caused their own prospective colors to emerge, but when combined into a double-bladed lightsaber, they turned into grey.
Nathan would use these for the rest of his life, until he handed them down to his killer, Cragen Karr, or Darth Aemulus.
[edit] Ebak Sison
A uniquely designed saber that held many secrets within its metal hilt. It had a basic shape of a saber but within a few seconds a blaster stock, trigger and holder could be retracted from the side of the saber and following immediate deactivation of the saber could activate a bypass mechanism in the chamber that activated the blaster technology in the hilt allowing Ebak to use his Lightsaber not just as a saber itself but as a blaster, using this he was able to get the upper hand and even kill a dark Jedi utilizing this uniquely built saber. The saber blade was green but the blaster bolt were red.
Ebak kept this with him for the rest of his life, all that is known is that he never released the technology, that allowed a saber such as this to be built, to anyone and that the Saber was not on him at the time of his death, it is rumored to be located somewhere at the Valley of the Jedi.
[edit] Darth Galdon
Darth Galdon's Lightsaber was very unique. At his command, it could do many things. After Galdon died from the duel with Jaina Solo, his final request was to give it to the next Jedi Master. After many attempts by the sith to steal it, it was given to a new jedi master. But during a battle with the sith, The sith hit it with a Sun Djem Strike and it went into a black hole. It hasnt ever been seen since.
[edit] Variations
The Whitesaber, used by Michael Blox, was a variation to the ordinary lightsaber design, and was used by top Jedi Masters.
