Sera Gormain

Leiraya Moran was a Human Jedi born on Corellia in 3986 BBY, the only daughter to Ti'ana and Davin Moran. The Moran family ran an organic farm in the community of Silver Hills, one of two communities containing a Jedi training centre, and favouring a non-traditional approach to training. This approach treated early Jedi training much as any extra-curricular activity. Her advanced training began in 3970 BBY, training with Master Sera Gormain. Being of a particularly nonviolent persuasion, she mainly studied lightsaber combat as a form of dance. She was also easily identified by the other trainees as she was the only one of them who refused outright to wear shoes.

Her adventures took her farther than she ever intended- expecting to spend her life on Corellia, eventually taking over the family farm, she instead found herself involved with some of the most important figures in the Jedi Civil War. While she sometimes found herself at odds with them, due to her comparatively strange background, she eventually managed to work well with the crew, and even become close friends with some of them. It was a far cry from her home life, but she took to it with style and flair as befits a Corellian.

[edit] Biography

[edit] Early life

Leiraya grew up as a fairly carefree child on the farm. Her father cultivated many varieties of organic fruit, and she spent many hours climbing into the trees and running around the yard. Her mother specialized in flowers, and had a beautiful garden that was unrivaled in Silver Hills. Her best friend growing up was Skyler Ducharme, a softspoken boy who moved to Silver Hills from Coronet. She intimidated him a little at first with her impetuous personality, but he soon came to realise the advantages of coming over to a house where there was always fresh-baked food to be had.

Her Force powers manifested themselves early on, but with no regularity at first. Her father was the first to discover her abilities, when he watched in horror as she fell out of a tree, then miraculously slowed herself down before she hit the ground. She simply got up and ran off to another tree as her father stood, gaping at the scene. She underwent basic training with other students her age when she started attending the local school, and through these lessons she learned some modicum of control over her powers. There would still be an occasional outburst of uncontrolled Force, but this happened with less and less frequency.

Her advanced training began in 3970 BBY. While she inherited her father's pacifistic streak, she learned to love lightsaber combat and treated it much as a form of dance. While most trainees had more brute force than she, few had her speed and grace. Her refusal to wear shoes allowed her a certain nimbleness that was impossible to replicate in combat boots, and so even though she was not as strong as most of the other Jedi, she could hold her own in most practice duels. Her style was in most stark contrast to that of the traditional and somewhat militaristic Kylan Sheffield, and so their Masters directed them to be sparring partners. The friendship they formed would prove to be among the strongest of their peers, even though nobody could quite understand why they got along in the first place.

[edit] The Selonian Conflict

Upon the completion of her advanced training in 3966 BBY, the Selonian Conflict began rather explosively when the Selonians pointed their new set of warships at the Dralls. Many of her fellow Jedi took it upon themselves to protect the Dralls from the Selonian onslaught, among these her two friends Kylan Sheffield and Skyler Ducharme. She vehemently protested any violent response, and advocated a peaceful solution. Even though she tried to talk both her friends out of going, they felt it their duty to protect those who could not protect themselves. And so they departed, leaving a fuming Leiraya behind them.

Leiraya, not to be outdone by her peers, began working with the advocates for a peaceful solution. Through their research they managed to discover what had gone wrong- the Dralls were the main keepers of records in the Corellian system. The yearly information update package was sent to Selonia as usual, but a failure in communication did not let them know that the file format had changed to one that, while it could convey much more specific information, took up more space. The Selonians, using older computers, were not prepared for the new data format and when they did their normal download routine, the data overwrote large portions of their memory, including those containing passcodes. The Selonians, suddenly unable to access any of their vital information, were infuriated. Czerka Corporation, seeing their troubles, offered them a deal on warships. The Selonians took it, and immediately took retribution to what they thought was a deliberate act of vandalism.

Leiraya's team quickly sent an envoy to present this information to the Selonians. Upon realizing what had happened, they called a cease-fire and vowed to disarm, seeing the harm they had done.

This cease-fire, however, did not come soon enough. Kylan returned home, but Skyler was killed in one of the final battles of the conflict.

[edit] The Mandalorian Wars

When the Mandalorians invaded the Galactic Republic in 3963 BBY, she again supported a peaceful solution, which was even less palatable to those around her than it had been before. Leiraya and Kylan, who were now in charge of Waterfront Safety at the Jedi Enclave, spent many hours debating viable solutions to the Mandalorian problem. Unable to come to a consensus, they eventually agreed to leave the subject alone. However, in 3961 BBY Kylan left without a word, leaving only a handwritten note and a mobius ring behind for her. She rushed to the spaceport to see if she could catch him, but he had long since left. Communications from Kylan were few and far between, and stopped after only a few months. His family suspected the worse, but the Jedi Council would only say he was "missing." Leiraya, while concerned for his safety, was sure he was still alive. There was, however, little evidence to prove it.

[edit] The Jedi Civil War

Leiraya, determined to find Kylan, left Corellia in 3957 BBY. With the Jedi Civil War in full swing, she did her best to maintain a low profile. However, when she found herself stranded on Taris due to Sith quarantine, her days of having a low profile were over. Desperate to find a way off-planet, she resorted to using what little slicing skill she had to try to obtain access to a ship. She elected to go after the Ebon Hawk, property of the planet's most well-known crime lord. Hopeless of an effort as it was, she didn't feel she could conscionably steal from anyone else, and the Hawk was rumored to be the only ship fast enough to get off the planet, in any case. Her attempts to find the information she needed were clumsy, but successful. Unfortunately, while she was formulating a plan to get to the ship, reality caught up with her. Her artless intrusion was easily detected by the crime lord, and she was brought in for questioning.

Either they forgot she was there, or she was low on their priority list because she sat there for days. It wasn't until a strange group of infiltrators made it in that she was released- they wanted to steal the Ebon Hawk, and were willing to give her passage off the planet if she could provide the codes. She could, and so they barely escaped Taris as the Sith bombarded the planet.

She and her newfound traveling companions made their way to the Jedi Enclave on Dantooine, where Bastila Shan recommended they regroup. Leiraya, whose main interest was to find Kylan, rather expected she'd be expected to find her own way off the planet. Given the tensions between the Corellian Jedi and the rest of the Jedi, she did not think that anyone would desire her help or continued company. The Dantooine Council, however, surprised everyone by requesting that she join the mission in search of the Star Forge. The Council hoped that her nontraditional backgrounds and nonviolent conflict resolution strategies would be of use to the party. She was also given access to any information that might aid in her search for Kylan. Surprised, but grateful to be able to stay with the people she was just getting to know, she accepted and joined the mission.

She was of help to the group on many occasions, though her temper exploded sometimes at inopportune moments. Her companions quickly learned to avoid the subject of large corporations when she was around.

[edit] Personality and traits

"I will not hobble around on a cane that supports slavery!"
—Leiraya Moran[src]

Raised on an organic orchard by one of Corellia's more well-known social malcontents, Leiraya was raised to question the status quo. Further than just questioning the beliefs of others, she was brought up to be active about it. Nothing, she was taught, was more useless than a person who sat around complaining but never tried to change anything. Thus she was steadfast in her convictions, and was willing to do something about it.

Her firm belief in taking a stand and being active was a trait that was simultaneously admirable and annoying to her peers. She could come off as mildly abrasive to those who did not share her convictions, and she instigated more than her share of heated debates. For this reason, she was not universally liked, but she was fairly universally respected as her ability to listen improved over the years.

Her strident advocacy for the downtrodden made her an odd friend to Kylan Sheffield, one of the most traditional individuals of her acquaintance. But their shared love of intellectual discussion and debating made them both examine their positions carefully, and brought them together as friends.

She took great pleasure in the simpler things in life, such as playing music and dancing barefoot in the grass. Though others often found it strange, she stopped caring about their opinions early in life, and was decidedly happier for it.

[edit] Powers and abilities

Aside from being a Jedi, Leiraya was an accomplished dancer. She was skilled in many traditional forms of dancing, both individual and those that require a partner. This skill aided her greatly in her lightsaber training, which she worked into an art form.

[edit] Behind the scenes

Leiraya Moran started her life as a light side female Revan in Knights of the Old Republic. However, the author responsible for her did not like the direction the game took Revan in the second game. In a fit of stubbornness, she took Leiraya straight out of her boots, plopped her on Corellia in a light side male Revan universe, and made her even more rebellious.

Leiraya's character is heavily influenced by the students of Oberlin College, the free-thinking, placard-waving, Birkenstock-wearing hippies of the academic world. She has been described by the author as "everything I love about Oberlin and a few things about it that I can't stand."
