The Kirid Ground Forces (commonly abbreviated as KGF) was the primary division of the Kirid Grand Army, alongside the airborne forces and the naval forces. It was formed in 624 BBY, after the First War for Kiridak. It was the nation of Kiridak's main infantry and armored warfare organization, but also contained a small number of airborne elements. As of the Third War for Kiridak in 146 BBY, the entire KGF consisted of approximately 480,000 troops with 52,600 in reserve.

Any standard infantry member of the KGF was universally called a 'Trooper', regardless of rank. The Kirid Ground Forces were organized as follows:

[edit] Regiment

The largest body of troops in the KGF was the Regiment. Each Regiment consisted of approximately 50,000 troops, and was organized into battalions. There were 8 Regiments under full fighting strength at the beginning of the Third War for Kiridak, with several others reporting half or three-quarters strength.

A Regiment was not originally an official organizational level, and still isn't. It was the unofficial name given to a group of Battalions working in co-operation with each other. As a result of this, a Regiment had no formal leader. Rather, the most experienced Battalion leader was nominated to lead the Regiment.

A regiment did not have any support staff or vehicles of its own, as these would have been provided by whichever Battalion's leader was in command of the Regiment.

[edit] Battalion

A battalion was the second largest military body in the KGF. At optimal strength a Battalion would have contained 10,000 soldiers, split between standard infantry, vehicle crew and support staff. Each battalion was lead by a General or Lieutenant-General, with a non-fixed number of Majors and First and Second class Lieutenants as well.

A Battalion maintained its own vehicle pool and support staff. Each Battalion would commonly have had one or two separate Companies (see below) devoted to artillery support.

Each Battalion was not numbered based on its position in the Regiment, rather all the Battalions in the KGF were numbered as a single body. So rather than having a 1st, 2nd, 5th etc Battalion in every Regiment, there were 40 Battalions numbered in order. This was because it was not uncommon for a Battalion to be moved to a different Regiment or replaced by another.

[edit] Company

Every Battalion was split into Companies. At full strength, these would have consisted of approximately 2,500 troops. Each Company would have normally been led by a First Lieutenant, or a Second Lieutenant if none were available. Note, that in addition to the normal Companies, every Company would have contained a Command Company, led by a Major and consisting of the most skilled troops in the Company.

The Company was again organized into smaller units, named:

  • Platoon: Each Company would have 8 of these. Each was led by a Lieutenant. The platoon is split into:
    • Command Squad: This was the squad led by the Lieutenant and had precedance over the infantry squads.
    • Squads: This would have commonly been an indefinite number of normal Squads. A Squad consisted of 10 troops.

[edit] Armor

Unlike most conventional armies, armored support was not permanently assigned to individual Companies or Platoons. Instead, each Battalion would have maintained its own separate pool of motor vehicles. The General (or Lieutenant-General) would have distributed armored support between Companies as was needed, and withdrew them when the need was over.

[edit] Airborne units

As well as the standard regimental organization, there was one loose Company, with no numerical code. Instead, it was universally named 'Eagle Company' due to the nature of the Company. Every Platoon, every Squad was mounted into FX-TT1 Dropships. Its strength was similar to a standard infantry Company, with the exception that there would rarely be vehicle support.

The members of Eagle Company were something of an elite within the KGF. They were highly-trained, and extremely adept at urban warfare and aerial assaults. However, in sustained assaults Eagle Company struggled, as they lacked the numbers or the support to maintain a lengthy attack.

Eagle Company maintained around 300 FX-TT1s, and 100 FX-9R Gunships.

[edit] Uniform

The Kiridak Ground Force's uniform was an imposing and dark affair. The standard Kirid infantryman wears full black uniform, normally with webbing over it to hold ammunition or water flasks etc. The standard helmet was a black bowl-helmet that covered the base of the neck. A flak vest would be worn underneath the webbing, complete with shoulder pads.

The colors of the Kirid army were black and gold, although the gold was only worn on elite units and on ceremonial occasions. The purpose of the pure black uniform was to strike fear into the enemies's hearts. This image was exaggerated by the dust-masks and orange-glowing goggles worn during heavy dust-storms.

During desert operations, which were frequent, the uniform would be rather different. Wearing black in a desert was not a very sensible idea, and so every soldier was also given a uniform in khaki to blend in with the surrounding desert.

[edit] Major Conflicts

Kiridak, although an important Republic world, remained fairly isolated over the centuries since it joined in 200 BBY. Therefore, it had not partaken in any outside conflicts, other than sending the occasional relief force to a nearby planet. However, there had been three major wars on Kiridak itself.

[edit] The First War for Kiridak (630 BBY - 624 BBY)

Unlike its two successor wars, the First War for Kiridak was not between the Kiridakian High Government and the Grishara Alliance. At this point, Kiridak was far from a unified planet, and was actually named Kiris 3. The three major landmasses were split into countless city-states and provinces, warring with each other. The three most powerful of these were Vrakis, Kiridak and Grishara, each on different continents.

Kiridak and Grishara both had ambitions for unification of the planet, and set about conquering their neighbors. Both achieved unity of their continents through war in 629 and 628 BBY, and they became aware of their respective powers. Hostility rose between the two as their nationalist ambitions clashed. Kiridak made a move on the middle continent, occupied by Vrakis. Grishara answered, and the two great nations met in war on the continent. The war lasted for four more years, and countless millions of lives were lost. The smaller nation of Vrakis was all but wiped out in the middle of this conflict, but by the end of the war, Kiridak was forced to retreat from the continent, leaving Grishara in control.

Over the next two centuries, the Kiridak reformed into the Kiridakian High Government, whereas the Grishara remained the Grishara Alliance. The Kiridakian Grand Army was formed. There were countless minor territory disputes over the middle continent, but no real conflict. However, all-out war was to break out again.

[edit] Second War for Kiridak (426 BBY - 201 BBY)

War broke out again, and the Kiridakian Grand Army was thrown into combat over the middle continent once more. The two factions fought brutally over the middle continent, with both sides gaining and losing territory every few months. As well as this, the two factions began to send forces over each other borders into the homelands, in an effort to subjugate the opposition.

The war continued for nearly 200 years with no real headway either way, and eventually the successors to those who had started the war forgot why they were even fighting, knowing only that they had to win. There was heavy conscription on both sides, and populations began to fall.

Eventually, in 202 BBY, the Republic sent reinforcements to the aid of the Kiridakian high Government. With these reinforcements, the Kiridakians began to make a lot of ground, and conquered the majority of the middle continent. The Republic general wished to complete the campaign, but he could not. The Kiridakian and Grisharan leadership came to an agreement that to survive, they would have to stop fighting. The middle continent was divided evenly between the two factions.

With the planet apparently in peace, the Republic general made a successful report to the Senate. A vote was passed to include the planet into the Republic, and Kiris 3 prospered. Despite this, the peace between Kiridak and Grishara was strenuous. When a Senate vote was passed to rename the planet to Kiridak, this was made even more strenuous.

[edit] Third War for Kiridak (146 BBY)

In 146 BBY, a Sith Lord named Darth Sarmosck discovered the planet, and its political insecurity. For decades he had been spreading dissent for the Republic, and here he saw a prime target. He manipulated the Grisharan leader, and started an extremely bloody war.

Thankfully, due to the two Jedi Karis Janak and Borask Fett, the war was ended only a week after it started. Sarmosck had fled the planet when it became clear the Jedi would win, and the Grishara leadership immediately requested a ceasefire.

In this particular war, elements of the KGF were utterly devastated by unexpected AGA attacks, but they did have victories of their own.
