IG-50 combat droids were special droids designed by the Banking Clan for close combat attacks against the Jedi. Darth Sidious also requested the Banking Clan to construct these droids out of phrik alloys to have a higher success rate in taking out Jedi.

These droids lasted long in the Clone Wars, even though they were deactivated permanently after one year of their creation. Although some were deactivated, they fell into the hands of the early Galactic Empire as combat droids used to handle any Jedi who survived Order 66. They later inspired the Imperial Dark Troopers by Rom Mohc.

As the galaxy was in Civil War, the Galactic Droid Empire was formed and IG-50 combat droids returned once again to harass Jedi and even Sith living in the galaxy. As with Flame battle droids, these droids were used until the demise of the New CIS/Galactic Droid Empire.

Description[]

Created on the planet Eos, IG-50 combat droids were trained to handle many harsh conditions. They were also trained by General Grievous to learn the ways of the Jedi. Grievous usually trained with them and his own Magnaguards to teach them how to battle Jedi. For Grievous, he was shocked at how these droids attacked and behaved, being a formidable foe as he watched them battling Jedi combat droids. These droids were also skilled at hacking, able to hack into many databases in a matter of minutes.

Their weaponry was pretty basic, only wielding a pair of vibro-blades, a pair of rocket launchers located below their wrists, and two poison dart launchers, poisoning organic foes such as Clone troopers and Jedi. Unlike most droids of the Confederacy Army, these droids, like Magnaguards and Droidekas, had a higher intelligence rate and were smarter compared to other droids. This made them harder to defeat for the Jedi and with a phrik alloy, they were invincible to a Jedi's lightsaber. Fortunately for the Jedi, they had two flaws, they were able to be destroyed by various force powers and most clone weaponry could destroy them. Yet, IG-50 combat droids had retractable shields to protect themselves from clone trooper attacks so they only had to fear force powers by the Jedi. Later in the Clone Wars, IG-50 combat droids had their shields outfitted with a force reflector, that deflected force powers back to the one that used it.

History[]

Clone Wars[]

Eos[]

These new combat droids should prove to be a formidable foe to those... Jedi Scums!
—General Grievous[src]

IG-50 combat droids were first constructed at the secret droid factory on the volcanic planet of Eos. General Grievous was there to witness the creation of the IG-50 combat droids to personally train them. After finishing his training of the independent Magnaguards, Grievous would spend his free time training the IG-50 battle droids to get them familiar with Jedi attacks and defenses. When Grievous had to leave for important missions, San Hill decided to send in Jedi combat droids, who were trained like Jedi and used lightsabers and even some native Eosians. Pollux assassin droids were also sent in to aid in training and the IG-50 combat droid defeated all three foes.

Jedi Temple[]

What is that? A new kind of battle droid?
—Mace Windu[src]

When the Confederacy decided to make a small attack on the Jedi Temple, they decided to use IG-50 combat droids, IG-100 Magnaguards, and Droidekas to lead the attack and support Count Dooku. For the Jedi, they were in need of help as many droids started to overrun the Jedi Temple. The Republic sent clone troopers to aid the Jedi yet they were no match for the forces there. A group of IG-50 battle droids later hacked into the Jedi Temple computer and gained access to many important information about the Jedi. This battle debuted the use of IG-50 combat droid and a victory for the Separatists.

Coruscant[]

Organize your army, we will unleash our powers on the Jedi here and soon.
—Darth Sidious[src]

When Darth Sidious planned the attack on Coruscant, Dooku planned to unleash the IG-50 combat droids again onto the planet and inside the flagship of Grievous. When the battle began to favor the Republic, Dooku was killed and many IG-50 combat droids were outwitted by the Jedi's force powers and the Separatists lost the battle and their sieged hostage. A few months later, IG-50 battle droids had their combat shields outfitted with a force reflector, protecting them from force powers and deflecting them back at Jedi.

Utapau[]

Blast, these droids are too much.
—Obi-Wan Kenobi[src]

When General Grievous arrived to Utapau, where the Separatist Council was waiting, IG-50 combat droids were being constructed on Utapau. Obi-Wan Kenobi later arrived on Utapau, where the natives slipped the secret of the Separatists. Obi-Wan was later greeted with a swarm of IG-50 combat droids, who were waiting for him. For Obi-Wan, he was having much trouble, yet he was able to defeat all the droids by using on tactic, using the Force to slam the walls and pipes to smash the droids to pieces. A group of combat droids were also present with Grievous when he dueled Kenobi, yet Grievous didn't use these droids as he wanted to kill Kenobi due to personal matters. IG-50 combat droids were later scattered around Utapau, battling clone troopers across many levels on Utapau.

Mustafar[]

These droids are no match for the power of the Dark side
—Darth Vader[src]

When Darth Vader arrived on Mustafar, he had to slash his way through many Neimondian Guards and battle droids, where some of them were IG-50 combat droids. The dark side's power easily took out the IG-50 combat droids and he easily got to the Separatist Council and slaughtered them. Darth Vader later de-activated the Separatist Army and the lethal IG-50 combat droids. Before his duel with Obi-Wan, Darth Vader salvaged some IG-50 combat droids and shipped them to Coruscant for research by Palpatine and his scientists.

After the War[]

Imperial Use[]

These droids seem to be useful, re-activate them for our use.
—Palpatine[src]

Palpatine later used the IG-50 combat droids to make Separatist worlds surrender and become part of the Galactic Empire's collection of planets, where some species became enslaved. During the invasion of Kashyyyk, IG-50 combat droids were used to destroy Wookiee resistance and try to hunt down any Jedi in the area. For a few years, these droids served the Empire, where they would fight their last battle at Naboo. Rom Mohc later used these droids to come up with the first phase of lethal dark troopers. The IG-50's however, fell into the hands of Tyber Zann and the Galactic Droid Empire.

Fighting the Alliance and Empire[]

Alas, we have found them.
—Darth Tyler[src]
What on Earth is that? Some kind of new Imperial droid?
—Luke Skywalker[src]

With the birth of the Galactic Droid Empire, IG-50 combat droids returned under the command of Darth Tyler and Troyb. Fortunately for them, their new enemies were nothing compared to the Republic's clone troopers and Jedi. At Agon Nine, IG-50 combat droids were easily able to defeat any Rebel soldier or Imperial Stormtrooper that stood in their way. The IG-50s remained in use of the New CIS and Galactic Droid Empire until their dissolution. The Zann Consortium still used IG-50s to harass the Galactic Empire, Rebel Alliance, and even the Galactic Droid Empire.

Behind the scenes[]

The IG-50 bears a similar appearance to the Decepticon Frenzy from the 2007 film, Transformers.
