The Hutt Cartel was a vast criminal syndicate the operated primarily in the Outer Rim Territories. The Cartel was controlled by the Hutts and employed numerous species to carry out its criminal operations. The Hutt Cartel was in existence as early as the Great Galactic War, when it remained neutral in the war; the Hutts were displeased that the Sith did not include the Hutts in their plans, and the Galactic Republic was unsuccessful in bringing the Hutts to their side.
During its later years, the Hutt Cartel remained a force throughout the Outer Rim. It allied with the Galactic Republic against the Confederacy of Independent Systems during the Clone Wars. Later, during the Galactic Civil War, the Cartel waged war with the Zann Consortium. One of the primary members of the Cartel at the time was Jabba the Hutt, before he was killed during the Battle of the Great Pit of Carkoon. During the Yuuzhan Vong War, Hutt Space was demolished by the Yuuzhan Vong.
