The Human Mafia (often referred to as just the mafia) was a large, vast criminal society that came into existence sometime during the Great Sith War and was not completely eradicated until thousands of years later after the Second Galactic Civil War. It was a loose association of criminal groups composed almost entirely of Humans that shared a common organizational structure and code of conduct. Each group, known as a "family," claimed sovereignty over a territory in which it operated its rackets — with territories varying in size from neighborhoods and towns to entire cities and planets.[1]

EtymologyEdit

The Human Mafia came from the criminal society known as the Galactic Mafia, which was fragmented before the Great Sith War. Three crime families from the Galactic Mafia, all of which were Human supremacists, combined together to form the Human Mafia, giving it is name due to its exclusiveness to Humans. While eventually some alien species were allowed to associate and join the Human Mafia (but not past the rank of Enforcer), the name remained the same.[1]

The Human Mafia was formed during the Great Sith War in 3,997 BBY. It was created from the remnants of the Galactic Mafia, which had been destroyed several years earlier. The mafia quickly spread and became one of the most powerful criminal societies in the galaxy. The Human Mafia was led by the Commission, which served as a government body.[1]

It was composed almost entirely of Humans, and alien races received prejudice, although some families, such as the Trapani Crime Family, allowed alien races to serve in the family up to the rank of enforcer. Don Jirebon Trapani, head of the Trapani Family, even once allowed a Twi'lek to serve as a made man in his family, defying the Commission in the process. It was a rare exception, and the Twi'lek was allowed to remain as a made man.[1]

The Human Mafia would remain as the most powerful criminal society throughout the entire galaxy until the Second Galactic Civil War, when it was fragmented and never restored.[1]

Rank systemEdit

Every crime family had a similar ranking system which was universal for the entire mafia. Ranks in Human Mafia crime families were as follows:

  • The Don, or boss, was the head of a family. He controlled the family's business and his word was law. None may have refuse to carry out his will.[1]
  • The underboss was the “general” for the family – he was the second-in-command and organized the family and carried out the Don's orders. He was often the one to take over the family if the Don should die, or be out of commission. Some families only had underbosses during times of war.[1]
  • The consigliere, or counselor, was the right hand of the Don. He acted as an adviser for the Don, giving advise on how plans should be carried out etc., and often also have knowledge of the law, to guide the Don on how to avoid prosecution by the police or other legal problems.[1]
  • The caporegimes, or captains, led the soldiers and were often the one who, along with the underboss, planned and organized hits, rackets, operations, etc., as well as performing some of the aforementioned tasks personally. There were often a couple capos in a family.[1]
  • The soldiers, or soldatos, were the muscleman of the family. They carried out hits, racket collecting, day-to-day operations, etc. for the Don and the capos. It is the lowest “made man” rank in a family. Most large families had between 10 to 15 soldiers.[1]
  • The enforcers, or button-men, were the lower-ranked musclemen of a family. They were not “made men” and were often expendable. Most enforcers were guards, bodyguards, assassins, money-collectors, etc. and often commanded by either soldiers or capos. Most large families had between 100 to 500 enforcers.[1]
  • The associates were the non-member individuals that either worked for or assisted the family. Associates were either be corrupt officials, informants, contacts, spies, hired mercenaries, or low-ranked musclemen.[1]
