Forum:Quote of the Week
The Star Wars wiki of fan invention.
This is a historical archive of a proposal to create a Quote of the Week system and selection process. The proposal passed.
Please do not edit this page. If you have any further comments, add them to the talk page.
OFFICIAL Proposal:
- All users may nominate a quote from any article, although only users who meet the requirements of the voting policy may vote.
- Voting will carry on every week, and winning quotes will be placed into an "upcoming quotes" queue. One quote per week. (Quote of the Week)
- Winning quotes will be determined by the community. Once a quote reaches five (5) net votes (which is determined after adding the Support/Oppose votes), it will be added to the queue.
- Quotes may not contain profanity that exceeds a PG-13 rating.
- Users may use any reason they desire, such as "I don't like the quote" or "Too unbelievable" or "The quote is too long," to oppose a nomination. All reasons are acceptable, as long as civility is kept in check.
--Victor (talk) 03:19, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
It has come to my attention that we do not have a Quote of the Day. SWF has an enormous amount of quotes, some of which would be great for this award. I believe that, although we are not here to directly mimic Wookieepedia, we should have a QOTD, and that we should allow users to nominate and vote for quotes. We could work out the details later, for example how many votes would be needed to feature a quote. -- Joe Butler (Obi Maul12) talk 00:50, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
Per Vic, I'll propose a voting system. I believe that a quote should receive a total of four votes to be featured on the main page. One one hand, we can prevent the friends of the quote's author from successfully nominating a quote simply because it is their friend's. On the other hand, we won't be going overboard on a matter which isn't incredibly important. Plus, with the number of members we currently have here that are both active and can vote, going any higher on the required number of votes would make nominations likely drag on, meaning it would take a long time to successfully nominate a quote, simply because of a lack of steady users here. The voting proposal is subject to change, if the need arises. -- Joe Butler (Obi Maul12) talk 03:14, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

- I have always wanted to see this done, and there are some good quotes out their on many articles including Narod Antrell and I believe on Darth Abeonis. But in order to work, people need to start making some good ones to achieve a decent sized queue. X-Wing 327 18:55, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Neutral
- You're right, SWF does have a large amount of quotes. What you've neglected to mention is that most of them are garbage. Until I see a very compelling argument from either side, though, I'm staying neutral. I also need to stay neutral because you, Joe, have given really no reasons for anyone to support this. All I see up there is yet another "Wookieepedia has this, so we should too" proposal. - President Brandon Rhea
(Pressroom) (Record) 01:03, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
- While I agree that most quotes are garbage, there are quite a few that would be great great for this. And, I do have a reason to support this, though I didn't really state it above: it would help to serve as another reminder/promotion of the possibilities on SWFanon to new users. If we added some of your quotes, for example, they would show new users that they, too, could create compelling and interesting content. -- Joe Butler (Obi Maul12) talk 01:31, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
- But until that compelling and interesting content is created, how are we supposed to continue this? If there was a quote of the day, how long is this going to last? Two months? If there's a quote of the week, will it last a few months? A year? Basically, there's not enough good quotes, in my opinion, to sustain something like this, despite the fact that I do like the concept of having this. - President Brandon Rhea
(Pressroom) (Record) 01:34, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
- Then we could have...a Quote Drive?
I personally believe that we have enough quotes to last, at least for Quote of the Week. If we as a community feel we are running short, and come to a point where there isn't a single quote nominated, we could have some sort of drive requesting the creation of creative quotes, or something along that line. Besides, I could give you links to many excellent quotes which would be suitable for this. I myself will be creating quite a few in the coming weeks and months (Quotes and articles that I won't blast.) -- Joe Butler (Obi Maul12) talk 01:46, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
- Please keep in mind Brandon, I'm not the kind of person that would be vouching for quotes like the ones in here. -- Joe Butler (Obi Maul12) talk 02:04, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

- I respect that you're staying neutral, but do you really think that five members of our community would think a quote like that to be good enough? - He's right? Right is a matter of opinion, and at least Joe was mature enough in this situation to say that he respects mine, as I do is. And I don't give a damn how many people vote for something, I'll say what I believe and I won't change it until I feel that I actually believe in the proposal. I don't, so I won't vote. So, Arav, he's not 'right'. In your opinion, and his opinion, maybe, but, in this situation, I'm entitled to my opinion just as much as anyone else.
My page iChat What I've done 08:42, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
- I disagree that right is entirely a matter of opinion. Not that I'm giving a commentary on this topic or particular discussion, but just something that I felt needed to be said. -MPK 14:41, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
- Fair 'nuff, but I'm not saying right is always a matter of opinion. In subjects such as maths there is an answer, but in debates there's not.

# This is just another opportunity for the "cool kids" to show off to the world how much more eloquent they are than everyone. All a quote of the week would do is strengthen the already adamantine oligarchy that this wiki has become. Riddikulus (Riddikulus!) 01:01, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Discussion
- I could set up the pages necessary to make this happen. I am in support. -- Joe Butler (Obi Maul12) talk 00:50, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
- I have brought this up before with Brandon. I am in full support. As Obi has said we have many quotes and I think we should share that with the SWFanon community. Hey, there really is no down side to this. Obi is willing to set up the pages for it and we have many quotes. I say quote of the week because it is good to find really good quality ones, insead of rushing every day for 365 days a year for a quote. 52 quotes a year is better. Instead of voting for a quote a day then just list a quote and do that one each day if you want it a Quote of the Day. For a week, that requires voting, I think. I cant vote but i am in full support for a Quote of the Week.--

- I don't know how many quotes we have which are worth reading, but I'm just going to take a wild stab in the dark and say that we'd run out of them in short order. -MPK 02:03, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
- I don't necessarily think so, at least, if we're talking about Quote of the Week. -- Joe Butler (Obi Maul12) talk 02:05, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

I don't believe we're into deciding on the quote. I still believe w're into deciding if we should have one or not.

- As Tom said, we're not voting on quotes. I will set up all those pages for voting and what not later, so talking about quotes now is pointless. This still has to pass. --Victor (talk) 17:08, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
