For almost two-hundred years the Decreto-class Super Star Destroyer has represented the pinnacle of starship design…
—Darth Wyyrlok, 250 ABY
Originally based upon the designs of the The Soiyo (but scaled down) very few of these ships, in comparison to the number of warships of other classes, were ever built. They served as command & control vessels; being the flagships of various Sith Knights throughout the Sith Crusade and well into the Zao tenj War.
Even by the time of Caedus Wars the Decreto-class remained the most technologically advance warships in the galaxy. With many Sith Knights such as Darth Krayt and Darth Wyyrlok owning multiple vessels.
Dwarfing the frigates and cruisers in the Galactic Federation of Free Alliance's standard warship scale, the Dectreto-class was, until the introduction of its successor – the Ultima-class Super Star Destroyer – the largest warship in the Sith fleet, and the galaxy at a whole.
During the Clone Wars, Star Destroyers were considered medium-weight warships. With the extensive increase in warship-sizes in the Empire, Star Destroyers gradually came to be considered as smaller vessels. This continued well on into the Yuuzhan Vong War, so the Galaxy-class (as it was known then) was built to rectify this. But the vessels large size and power requirements meant that only one was ever built before the Sith Crusade.
Many versions of the class were built, serving as carriers and other roles.
The Galaxy-class' were built during the Yuuzhan Vong War to counter the increasing threat posed by the Yuuzhan Vong and their allies, the Peace Brigade. Construction of the Galaxy-class began many years before hand as an experimental void ship, but with the outbreak of war quickly turned into a "Mega Star Destroyer".
The Galaxy-class design proved a massive success and inflicted more casualties on the Yuuzhan Vong than any other single warship throughout the entire war. The Yuuzhan Vong named the ship the abomination and made it their top priority to destroy the warship, and its captain.
Following the Yuuzhan Vong war, the future of the Galaxy-class was brought into question. With the seduction of its captain Jasca Ducato towards the dark side of the Force, the GFFA faced a serious threat. The Soiyo caused major damage to the Outer rim planets and it wasn't for almost an entire year that The Soio was reclaimed by the Jedi.
During the Second Corellian Insurrection, with the first away in the Unknown Regions, Cal Omas ordered the construction of yet another Galaxy-class Super Star Destroyer. The Defender wouldn't be finished until the year 65 ABY, well over half way through the Sith Crusade, but once it had, it spear-headed the GFFA defense of many planets and proved more than a match for its predecessor, The Soiyo; although, on many occasions, the battle-hardened The Soiyo proved the better of the two.
Even though the Sith Order of Decreto continued to use and produce Decreto-class Super Star Destroyers, they decided to begin construction of much larger, more powerful versions. Thus, the idea of the Ultima-class was born.
