Rise of the Empire eraRebellion eraNew Republic era

Darth Imperious was the Sith title and identity of Jorus Kuun, a male Kel Dor Jedi Apprentice. Born to a family of merchants, Jorus lived on Dorin for the first nineteen years of his life. Unfortunately, his parents' jobs required frequent traveling, and Jorus could not see them much. After nineteen somewhat apathetic years, Kuun was discovered by a Jedi Knight from Luke Skywalker's Praxeum. The Jedi, detecting Jorus' high Force sensitivity, offered him to be taken to the academy for training. Jorus accepted, leaving his home and family behind.

Later, Jorus' parents were killed during an Imperial attack on Dorin. When the news reached him, Jorus became depressed, having not known his family nearly as much as he wanted to. Eventually, Kuun's destiny would be changed by Dark Jedi Jaden Korr, who, assisted by Imperial Remnant forces, led a raid on the Jedi Praxeum. Jorus was captured in the attack. Jaden, having sensed the Kel Dor's incredible potential, bent him to the dark side. Kuun was then sent to Thule, along with other captured Jedi, for survival training. While on the rocky world, Jorus' life was saved by Darth Persia, a Dark Lord of the Sith, who had also saw a potentially incredible underling in him. Persia convinced Jorus to join his cause, and Kuun survived the rest of his training course.

Jaden Korr accepted Jorus into his small cadre of Dark Jedi, and Jorus, having secretly been given the title of Darth Imperious, participated in missions and battles for the Dark Order of Korr. For months, he and Darth Persia waited and prepared for an opportunity to kill Jaden and take command of his forces. That opportunity came in the year 15 ABY, during a battle on Bakura, where Darth Persia was coordinating a fleet battle while Jaden was inside a military installation below. Deciding that the Order had gained enough planets and military strength that Jaden was no longer needed, Persia sent Imperious to Bakura's surface to kill Jaden. Although Imperious was severely wounded while battling Jaden and Jedi Master Kyle Katarn, he escaped and Jaden was killed in a massive orbital bombardment, which eventually destroyed the surface of the planet. Afterward, Imperious and Persia successfully took over the Dark Order, replacing it with a new Sith Empire, which would expand across the Outer Rim.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Jorus was born on Dorin into a wealthy family that operated a shipping company. When he was nineteen years old, a Jedi discovered his strong sensitivity to the Force and offered to take him to Yavin IV for Jedi training. He accepted, and was instructed by numerous Jedi throughout his life at the Jedi Praxeum, but was never sent on a mission nor assigned a permanent master. This, coupled with news of his parents' deaths in a recent Imperial attack, depressed Jorus and slowly molded him into a reclusive individual, quickly becoming bored with his life.

Kuun's life would change when a group of Imperial forces led by Dark Jedi Jaden Korr attacked the Jedi Academy, killing numerous students. After a very brief duel with Jaden himself, Jorus was incapacitated and captured. Because the primary goal of the attack was to capture Jedi apprentices for conversion (and also because of Kuun's great Force sensitivity), the Kel Dor was transported to the Star Destroyer Dark Hand above the planet when the Imperial forces pulled out. While aboard the Dark Hand, Jaden probed into Jorus' mind, discovering his past, and used this knowledge of his pain to easily twist him to the dark side.

Jorus was then sent to Thule for training as a Dark Jedi. He and other new students would be placed in the heart of a giant mine shaft, each with a lightsaber, shadowtrooper armor, and limited food for two weeks. Whoever the few that learned to be self-reliant and strong enough to survive would be allowed to serve as Dark Jedi. Jorus was not successful for the majority of his time there; another student incapacitated him and stole his supplies, leaving him only with his armor and lightsaber. Jorus was then forced to wander around the tunnels and shafts trying to find food, but in vain. As Kuun lay starving to death a short time later, he was approached by one of the Dark Jedi masters who he had seen earlier before beginning the training course. The man identified himself as Darth Persia, who had been observing Jorus from the beginning of the training course.

Persia used the Force to sustain Jorus and keep him alive. He then explained himself and his intentions of eventually killing Jaden Korr and taking control of his Order. He then told Jorus to join him as a Sith apprentice. Although Jorus agreed to join the Sith, Persia was unsure that the Kel Dor hadn't accepted only so that he survived. He then quickly devised a plan to ensure that Kuun had indeed turned completely to the dark side. Persia spotted a nearby student and immobilized him, recognizing the young man as the student who stole Jorus' supplies, almost leading to his death. Holding him in place with the Force, Darth Persia encouraged Jorus to strike the thief down in his anger. The Kel Dor did so, to Persia's delight. Persia applauded Jorus' actions and told him to venture into the caverns and kill five other students to prove his strength. If he succeeded, he would have proven himself strong enough to become one of the Sith.

Jorus agreed and did as the Sith Lord told, tracking down and killing five other apprentices with little difficulty, and in the process, learned to cast Force drain by feeding off of the last student to keep himself alive. He had gained the power through instinct alone, with no training whatsoever. This astonished Darth Persia, who then accepted Jorus as his apprentice. Confident that together they would conquer the galaxy, Persia endowed his apprentice with a new name: Darth Imperious.

Service to the Dark Order[]

Imperious Lok

After completing his initial training in the Dark Order under Darth Persia, Imperious had learned to channel his fear of failure into concentration and focus. Afterward, Jaden Korr sent the Kel Dor on various missions throughout the Dark Order War as a special operations agent, usually working either alone, with several other Dark Jedi, or with multiple squads of stormtroopers. Imperious proved himself quite competent during missions. He was one of the only two survivors of the Skirmish on Ryloth, and later he single-handedly infiltrated Lok Revenant outpost on Lok and recovered a datacard containing important reconnaissance information. Between missions, Imperious received additional training under Persia. This did not go unnoticed by Jaden, who did not want one of his order's most promising students to be under Persia's influence, which already encompassed much of the organization. Before long, Imperious had become one of the strongest and most successful Dark Jedi apprentices in the entire Dark Order with his skill only outmatched by the Dark Jedi masters, thanks to the training from Darth Persia.

Power Shift[]

In the year 15 ABY, the New Republic uncovered Jaden's location on the Imperial-controlled planet of Bakura, overseeing the production of the dark trooper factories there. Hoping to put a swift end to Jaden, who had been responsible for various war crimes throughout the Dark Order War, Supreme Commander Dagmar Morlev of the New Republic led a fleet of warships to Bakura to capture or kill the Dark Jedi, ending the war once and for all. Jaden instructed Darth Imperious to coordinate the battle with Darth Persia aboard the Order's flagship while Jaden stayed inside Salis Omega, a fortified ground base on the surface. As the battle raged in orbit and the Republic deployed an enormous ground assault force, Darth Persia decided that since he had already gained much influence in the Dark Order, he had reached an ideal time to take control of the organization. He dispatched Imperious to the planet with orders to kill Jaden. He was also instructed to, if possible, take the Scepter of Ragnos, which was an ancient Sith artifact that had belonged to the Sith Lord Marka Ragnos. Jaden had taken it from Tavion Axmis, who was the original leader of the Cult of Ragnos before Jaden killed her and reformed the cult into the Dark Order.

After landing inside Salis Omega, Imperious confronted and ordered Jaden to turn the artifact over to him. Korr refused, infuriated at being given orders by one of his subordinates. Imperious then revealed his master's plan to use Jaden to build a fleet which would then be taken by the Sith, intending to goad his opponent into attacking less effectively. Jaden was enraged by the revelation, but the exchange was interrupted by the appearance of Jaden's old master, Kyle Katarn, who had tracked the Dark Jedi to Bakura and was listening in on their conversation.

Kyle vs Imperious

Imperious duels Kyle Katarn on the catwalks inside the base.

Katarn ordered Jaden to surrender to the Jedi. Furious, Korr attacked, beginning a three-sided duel, which eventually reached the roof of the facility. Imperious held his own against Katarn and Jaden, eventually succeeding in stunning Korr and taking his scepter. He then used the weapon to channel blasts of dark side energy onto his two opponents, nearly overwhelming their defenses. However, he soon began to lose control over the dark side energy, and his attacks rapidly dropped in accuracy. Korr exploited this weakness, throwing his lightsaber at Imperious and cutting his left arm off. The Sith then completely lost control of the scepter and was knocked out by the subsequent explosion of dark side energies.

Katarn and Jaden continued their duel, leaving the scepter behind. In orbit, Darth Persia was unable to sense his apprentice through the Force, due to his unconsciousness. Fearing that Imperious had failed in his mission and was killed by Jaden, the Sith Lord ordered the surface of the planet to be destroyed in order to prevent Jaden's escape. Just before the bombardment began, however, Imperious managed to regain consciousness and recovered the scepter. Katarn and Jaden, who were still engaged in battle, were unaware of this and therefore made no attempts to stop him. The vulnerable Sith, knowing he would stand no chance against either of them in his current state, fled to one of Salis Omega's hangar bays and fled the planet's destruction in an Imperial shuttle. Kyle Katarn escaped, but Jaden did not. Although he was angered at being nearly killed by his master, Darth Imperious presented the scepter to Persia. Pleased, the Sith Lord put the artifact in his quarters for safekeeping, before later having it transferred to a storehouse on Eriadu. After the incident, Imperious acquired a mechanical replacement for his arm, and continued to serve Darth Persia.

Because Darth Persia's impressive military accomplishments had gained him the confidence of most of the Dark Order's leaders, the Sith took control of the Jaden's coalition with almost no opposition. Although a small group of loyalists refused to join Persia, they were quickly eliminated in the First Battle of Eriadu. Following this, Darth Persia declared war on the New Republic after forming a new Sith Empire. Darth Imperious would serve in the Dark Order War until its end, typically sent on missions by Persia as an assassin and military commander.

Personality and traits[]

After Darth Persia saved his life, he became the only person to truly have Imperious' loyalty, which puzzled Jaden somewhat, as he did not want one of the other masters in his organization gaining more favor than him. Imperious rarely questioned Persia's orders, but usually was secretly making his own means of working around Persia's plans, should he see them as unsuitable for the situation. During his apprenticeship under the Dark Lord, Imperious was always nervous and afraid of losing his master's respect, which Persia used in turn to build his trust.

Darth Imperious also studied history under Darth Persia on occasion. After hearing about the Mandalorian Neo-Crusaders of the Old Republic era, Imperious took to occasional study sessions of Mando'a with Darth Persia. However, Imperious' low attention span led to his failure to successfully learn the language.

Powers and abilities[]

Chitchat

Jorus converses with another student shortly before his arrival at the Jedi Academy.

While he was killing the other students in the Thule Caverns, the power which Darth Persia used to revitalize Jorus had worn off, causing Jorus to return to his state of near-starvation. In a response, Jorus automatically killed the last student using force drain without making a conscious effort, or even having any prior knowledge of the technique. The experience was unpleasant for Kuun, and since leaving Thule, Darth Imperious found that occasionally, he would suddenly feel a hunger for strength in the force. He would have to satisfy this hunger soon via manual use of force drain or some other technique, or the power would trigger automatically, directed at the nearest life form. The power was also known to be triggered when Imperious was severely wounded or in near-death situations.

Like other Sith, Darth Imperious was proficient at casting Force Grip and Force Lightning. He also trained himself in other techniques not usually used by Sith, including Force Blinding and Force Stun, which he frequently used to harass his opponents before killing them.

Behind the scenes[]

The word "Imperious" means "arrogantly domineering or overbearing". The author understands that Imperious' background is rather stock, but doesn't think that a different origin is necessary for the character.
