The term crewer referred to the enlisted crew members of any starship large enough to warrant such a distinction; typically, these were medium- to large-sized freighters and most types of warships. Though military forces such as the Republic Navy used the term as a catch-all for any non-commissioned personnel, it was also a specific rank given to junior enlistees. It was further subdivided into three ranks: apprentice crewer, given to those just entering the service; crewer, which was earned after several months of active service; and senior crewer, which signified that the holder was becoming more competent with shipboard duty.

Crewers who served for some time could then earn promotion into the petty officer ranks, which served as the Navy's counterpart to the Army and Marines' various grades of sergeants. Because they did not hold commissions nearly all petty officers, no matter their rank, were nearly always lumped together when describing a ship's complement of crewers.
