"Coruscant was a word that would forever be synonymous with the Galactic Republic...."
Shadows of the Jedi: The Legend of Ussej Padric Bac

Coruscant was the political hub of the galaxy for thousands of years. Most historians agreed that it was the most politically important world in the galaxy. At various times, it was the capital of the Galactic Republic, the Sith Empire, Galactic Empire and the New Republic. The vast majority of Coruscant’s wealth was due to a number of the galaxy’s trade routes making its way through the planet. These trade routes included the Perlemian Trade Route, the Corellian Run, the Metellos Trade Routes, the Koros Trunk Line and the Leisure Corridor. The planet’s hyperspace coordinates were (0,0,0), essentially making it the very center of the galaxy.

Coruscant was the site of many important events in the history of the galaxy. The Galactic Charter was signed by Jonathan Bac and other founding members of the Republic in what later became the Galactic Senate building and the Great Jedi Bendu Pyramid, which later belonged to the Jedi Order until the Great Territorial War, was built soon after. The fierce confrontation between the minions of Xendor Taral and the Jedi Bendu also took place in the capital city. The world later became home to the Jedi Order, as well as Darth Viea, Darth Nefarius and Darth Sidious during the three Sith takeovers.

The actual, planet-wide city of Coruscant was known as Galactic City and, later, Imperial City. Other nicknames for the city included Republic City, Coruscant City, City of Spires, New Republic city and the City of Angels.
