The term corpsman referred to those who served in the Republic Navy as front-line medical care providers, either aboard warships or on planets. Similar to medics in the Army, corpsmen were responsible for providing primary first aid to wounded or sick Navy and Marine personnel and seeing to their transference to a vessel's sickbay or a dedicated field hospital. Corpsmen were trained to deal with battle wounds ranging from light injuries to severe combat trauma, typically while under fire. Because of this, they only carried sidearms, and under normal rules of warfare were forbidden to use them unless directly attacked.

Within the military structure of the Galactic Republic, corpsmen were attached to Marine units as well as those of Navy troopers, and were typically assigned at the squad or platoon level, depending on circumstances and need.
