The Clone Wars was a large-scale galactic conflict fought between the Galactic Republic and the Mandalorian Clans during the final days of the Republic. The conflict traced its origins back to the Invasion of Utapau when the Battle of Utapau broke out between the droid armies of the Trade Federation fought against the forces of the Utapau Security Forces, the Gungan Empire and the Jedi Order. The three forces were able to defeat the droids, but were nearly overrun by the Mandalorians before the then-newly commissioned Grand Army of the Republic intervened.

[edit] Origins
The origins of the Clone Wars were traced back to the Invasion of Utapau, a conflict between the Trade Federation and Utapau in 22 BBY. The conflict began after Senator Malus Palpatine and Queen Sabé Arcadia supported successfully passed Galactic Senate legislation that prevented Galactic Republic corporations such as the Trade Federation from using slave labor outside of Republic jurisdiction, thereby hurting a large part of Federation commerce and workforce. With help from Lord Maul, in the hopes of repealing the law, and for a degree of revenge, the Federation blockaded Utapau, choosing the planet because they felt it was relatively helpless.[1]
After days of failed negotiations on the part of Arcadia, the Federation cut off all communication on the planet and began landing their invasion force.[2] It did not take them long to control most of the seemingly peaceful planet,[3] though while the Federation droid army was moving the citizens of the cities and villages into internment camps that they had built,[4] Arcadia was able to escape where she eventually made it to Coruscant,[5] albeit after a detour on Tatooine,[6] to formally request assistance from the Galactic Senate.[4]
While Arcadia was off of the planet, HoloNet news reports suggested that thousands had been killed by the Trade Federation and millions had been displaced.[7] The Federation also converted underground factories into droid foundries to produce additional battle droid soldiers, and they began to search the swamps of the planet to destroy the settlements of the Gungan Empire.[8] During this time, numerous Galactic Senators debated with Chancellor Valorum and other Republic dignitaries about using force against the Federation, as well as preparing for a possible invasion of the Mandalorian Clans after evidence was uncovered by Jedi Master Mace Windy regarding a potential plot by the Mandalorians.[9]
