"I've always failed to see why so many with power choose to abuse it"
—Bergen Nelson

Bergen Nelson was a powerful Jedi who was influential mainly in the years after 40 ABY. He was born on the isolated planet of Arthe in 5 ABY, along with other future Jedi Notanoj Khan, Limache Lesson, and Maichel Nahk. He heard tales of a strange space-traveler that had come from another galaxy three years before his birth and, with his friends, always had aspired to find the galaxy which the stranger had come from. As he grew on the more primitive world of Arthe, he discovered that he was very intelligent. This made be known by slang on his planet as a nerd. He found other "nerdy" friends on his home world and began to seem destined for a place of power on the lone planet. However, they discovered the parts of the space traveler's ship. Together, they built similar parts and eventually created a snubfighter with a hyperdrive. Bergen flew it to coordinates that the traveler had left behind, which happened to be the coordinates to Coruscant. He arrived in the galaxy in 21 ABY.

He represented the planet of Arthe, which was soon initiated into the Galactic Republic. During this time, Luke Skywalker met Bergen and sensed his high Force-Sensitivity. He brought Bergen to the Jedi Temple where he instantly formed a competition with another apprentice named Ramk Lermill. As trainees the two competed for the attention of Luke Skywalker, both aspiring to become his apprentice. After time, it became clear that Bergen was the more talented. However, as Luke began to assign apprentices to masters in the reformed system, he chose Ramk as his own, assigning Bergen to the special outcast Jedi Brenge Solnon.

He developed a close relationship with his master throughout the years as he fought alongside him during the Yhuzzan Vong War. During this time, Bergen trained well and his abilities grew. Brenge commented that he almost grew in Force ability. After surviving the war after joining his master's personal squadron, he was easily promoted to Jedi Knight. Little occurred for him until the year of 42 ABY, when his home planet was suddenly taken over.

Thus began the infamous War Against Darth Pathos for which the Galactic Alliance was vastly unprepared for. As Alliance planets began to fall to his armies, Bergen pleaded to the Jedi to engage him or at least convince the Alliance to fight back with full force. By this time he was a Jedi Master, and therefore his opinion was taken into great consideration. However, the Jedi opinion was worthless to the Alliance under Daala's rule, and the Jedi did not have nearly enough forces to combat the armies of Pathos. So Bergen promptly left the order and invited certain people to join his vigilante group. His friends in the Jedi Order immediately left and joined him, as did some others who thought like him. With the help of his former master, he formed a small militia. For the main fighting force in the group, he banded together his friends, Jedi, and other pilots and dubbed them Geek Squadron.

They combated Darth Pathos in various battles, with Bergen leading the squadron. Eventually, their vigilante group grew and gained support from different planets and sources. After various occurrences in war, including the betrayal of his best friend, the Alliance and the Jedi united with Bergen to stage a strike on the world of Arthe, which eventually ended with a final duel between Bergen and Pathos. Bergen had become a very talented Jedi, near the level of and Grand Master. He was eventually able to incapacitate Pathos, but left him to die as he attempted to bring the building down upon them. Pathos was eventually stabbed by his own apprentice.

After the war, Bergen was made a master on the Jedi High Council, and still participated in missions with the perfected roster of Geek Squadron. He eventually married fellow squad-mate and Jedi Anin Donrel. It is unknown when he died.

[edit] Biography

[edit] Early life

"He loved to know things, but even more loved to understand things."

-Bergen's mother

Bergen began life as the son of two teachers in the isolated, slightly primitive (compared to the larger galaxy) world of Arthe in 5 ABY. Only in the last century the planet began exploring space. Bergen grew up living a normal life on the planet, and began participating in the education system in his hometown and was realized to be very talented, in all academics ranging from intelligence to creativity. However, he also seemed to isolate himself from most of his peers with the exception of a few who shared his admiration of knowledge. The young boy also proved to be idealistic and heard tales of the Space Wanderer who had come to the planet three years before his birth. Showing an ambitious side as well, Bergen vowed to find lands outside of the small star cluster the planet Arthe was in.

He was able to convince the few of his friends to attempt to create a way to find other worlds. They investigated the ruins of the Space Traveler's ship and found some old parts, including the instructions for a hyperdrive system. After one year of working to understand the complexities of the technology and then applying them, they drew up plans for a snubfighter with weaponry and a hyperdrive. A year and a half later they had built the starship. The team of four (Notanoj Khan, Maichel Nahk, and Limache Lesson) used a random integer generator on a calculator to determine who would be the first to try to travel to coordinates they found on the hyperdrive plans left by the Space Wanderer. Bergen won. He left his home planet after saying his goodbyes, plotting the coordinates and hoping.

[edit] Finding the Galactic Republic

Fortunately, the coordinates were precise and the handmade hyperdrive was fully functional. He arrived at Coruscant after two frightening days. At his announcement to security officials that he was from an unknown planet, they brought him before the New Republic President, Borsk Fey'la, after they had him pass through many tests. Despite these test, Fey'la still believed him to be out of his right mind. Luckily, Luke Skywalker was visiting Fey'la and was able to see into Bergen's mind and discover that he was telling the truth. Using the memory in Bergen's ship's hyperdrive, they found the coordinates to Arthe. Fey'la ordered a small fleet to head there.

While the Republic tested his tales, Bergen studied the history of the galaxy that was new to him. He had enjoyed history immensely on his homeworld, and soon became familiar with much of the past of the galaxy he now resided in. He was enthralled by the Jedi, intrigued by the wars and different tactics used, and realized the injustice that had plagued the galaxy even under Republic rule. He also studied more about the technology of the galaxy and the techniques of ship flight.

Eventually, the New Republic fleet made contact with Arthe and offered to make them a part of the Republic, with Bergen representing them at first. The planet accepted and Bergen formally signed them into the republic and gained them a seat in the senate.

Soon enough, Arthe accepted the various technology the galaxy had to offer and elected an official representative. The Republic also sent them a sizable defense fleet to protect and monitor the system.

Now Bergen did not know what to do with his life, as it seemed that his climax had just been reached at the age of sixteen. He practiced flying, at which he became quite talented at. He also studied galactic law and the law systems of other major planets, planning on one day becoming a representative for Arthe some kind of politician. But then, opportunity struck when he was visited by the Jedi Master Luke Skywalker.

Skywalker explained that when they first met, a half-year ago at the chancellor's room, he had felt a strange powerful presence enter the room. Luke was near positive that it had to be Bergen, for it was not the guard that escorted Bergen nor Fey'la. So he at last had decided to pay the newcomer a visit. He asked permission to test Bergen for Force potential, to which Bergen who was enthralled by the Jedi and was eager to join their ranks, accepted. Luke tested him by attempting to invade his mind, and was thrown back halfway across the large room. Luke invited him to join the Order, and Bergen accepted.

Right before he left for Yavin Four, he was visited by his old friends who had finally managed to come. He told them what had happened, and though they all expressed happiness, they were filled with jealousy. Limache was merely disappointed that he was not able to experience these things and become a Jedi, though he admitted that he might not have been able to accomplish what Bergen had. Maichel was jealous that he was not being offered the power of a Jedi. But Notanoj was the most furious, as he and Bergen were in constant competition. Though it was never discussed between the two, one always had to be better at something than the other, or at least have a balanced amount of things that they were better at. Being the hero that came from a new planet and now becoming a Jedi obviously made Bergen the superior in his eyes and the galaxy's. Bergen left his friends after a day with them, and left on less than adequate terms.

[edit] The Jedi Order

Bergen had a peaceful journey to the Jedi Academy on Yavin 4 and welcomed by many of the trainees who had heard about his acts and were glad to know him. He was quickly trained in the basics of the Force and of lightsaber combat by Luke Skywalker and other high ranking Jedi along with other trainees. He would be some of the first to go through the revived master-apprentice training style as before Luke would train a whole class. However, they were put to work to discover their skills and level of ability so they could be assigned to a master that would benefit them. The trainees were taught basic force powers, the morals of a Jedi, the history of the Jedi, and lightsaber combat by various knights as Luke observed them. For the other part of the day, they were allowed to practice their skills and spar with one another in practicing rooms.

It soon became apparent that Bergen was a prodigious trainee, he knew most history from his readings on Couruscant and quickly was able to perform Force techniques with ease. But his favorite pastime was the art of lightsaber combat. He soon became quite adept and would always be able to defeat any trainee he challenged. Occasionally he would attempt to spar with an apprentice. Sometimes he won, when he did not, he practiced harder.

Soon enough, Luke announced one day that in two weeks, he would assign apprentices to masters. Everyone aspired to be chosen as Luke's apprentice as he stated that he would be taking one. But most admitted that their were only two main contenders for the honor, and both were fully aware of their chance, Bergen was one, but an apprentice named Ramk Lermill was the other.

It had been clear to both that they were the most elite of the group of trainees. Ramk was the only one who could come close to the rate of improvement Bergen had. Both spent much time practicing saber combat, but they never faced each other, both fearing defeat at the hands of the other. Competition to see who was the better was formed between the two out of their human nature rising in their teenage years. While most agreed that Bergen was the most adept in the Force. The question came to whom could handle a blade better. When Luke made his announcement that he would be taking on an apprentice, both knew that the question would need to be answered. They finally agreed to duel.

For this first duel between the two top trainees, a large audience of their peers gathered to watch the two fight. They engaged each other with practice saber with skill. Both were hesitant to show a weakness so they rarely attacked, but when they did, it was quite a spectacle. Neither fighter gained an advantage, until the end of the fight, where Bergen suddenly forced Ramk onto the defensive and pressed him back. But just when it seemed that Bergen would win, Ramk started to swing his lightsaber in a crude form I style, attacking with raw power like a madman. Bergen was taken aback at Ramk's primitive yet strong maneuvers. When he attempted to block one of his adversary's attacks, his lightsabr flew out of his hand. Ramk was declared the victor.

Knowing that he could have won the battle if he was not so unprepared for such an attack, Bergen was ashamed. However, this made him train harder to be prepared for any of the forms that could be used against him. He worked to study the forms of combat used in the past and now and eventually chose to learn forms II and V. Using simulators to work at them and testing them against live opponents honed his skills. He fought simulations of the other forms to be prepared for them. After a week of training, he deemed himself ready to combat Ramk again and challenged his rival to a duel. Ramk arrogantly accepted.

The two dueled again, and gathered a large audience once more. At first, they were at a stalemate again, but soon Bergen used his knowledge of form V to gain an advantage, never letting Ramk attack. Ramk finally broke free with his anger fueled form I attacks , but Bergen countered with form II, seeking out Ramk's many weakness and clipping him on his limbs many times before finally disarming him with a flick of the wrist. Bergen had won their second match. Leaving Ramk fuming. Both agreed to have a third final duel the day before Luke's announcement as they were both aware of the others desires.

Bergen improved his skills as Ramk tried to learn something other than the foolish form I, finally deciding that he preferred form V. The two met and noticed that Luke was watching along with some other knights as they were impressed with the ambition and ability of the two. They fought, each with tremendous skill for their age and experience. Ramk used his new skills in form V to surprise Bergen early on, but Bergen countered his skill of form II to dodge and stab at the places Ramk left undefended with his attacks. Both received many wounds from the other, but Ramk soon became tired and lost control, in this state Bergen was able to disarm him. The third match was over, and Bergen had come out as the victor that everyone now believed would receive the privilege of being Luke's apprentice. However, with his victory, Bergen's rivalry with Ramk disappeared. Ramk accepted his defeat but acknowledge his own skill. The two made amends for their tense rivalry and eventually became friends as their apprentice years went by.

The next day, Luke assigned apprentices to master whom he believed would suit them well. Eventually all were paired off except Ramk and Bergen, and Luke was the only master left. Luke announced that Ramk Lermill would be his apprentice, that Bergen would be receiving tutelage from another Jedi named Bregne Solnon who would be arriving to the planet soon.

All were shocked as everybody including many of the Jedi Knights expected Bergen to become Luke's apprentice, and none had ever heard of Brenge Solnon. Bergen left for his quarters in wait for his new master, slightly disappointed. Soon enough, Brenge Solnon arrived and surprised Bergen with his appearance. When Luke explained that he was a Jedi Master before the Fall of the Republic, he had expected an older, gruff man. But Brenge appeared as a dashing man in his thirties. At Bergen's request he explained that it was an age preservation technique he had designed to disguise himself during the Jedi Purge and the subsequent years. He also gave Bergen a short demonstration of his own abilities. Soon enough, Bergen was no longer disappointed.

[edit] Apprenticeship

It was soon clear to Bergen that he and Brenge shared many similarities in personality. He learned of Brenge's past experiences in the Old Republic and his times as a Sith assassin that eventually reformed and went on to deal a major blow the Empire by stealing ships and destroying others. Bergen was intrigued to learn that Brenge was officially not part of the Order and didn't plan on becoming a member. He had learned during the Clone Wars and the Dark Times that he preferred doing things his own way and therefore planned to do so. He revealed that he had been instructed by Luke not to encourage Bergen to have the rash personality that Brenge did, but believed that Brenge could teach Bergen techniques that the old Jedi Order had that Luke had yet to discover, this would make Bergen a valuable asset to the New Order. Brenge also explained that Luke had been trying to convince him to join the Order for a long time, and having him train an apprentice was about as close as he would get.

Brenge was instantly impressed with Bergen's skill with a saber as well as his quick mastery of Force techniques. He began to teach Bergen the complexities of saber combat and worked him to learn all the forms. He taught Bergen many knight level Force abilities of the Old Order, consisting of many not known to Luke. By 24 ABY, Bergen had become as adept as a normal master in the arts of the blade and knew powers that Luke was not aware of. At that time, Brenge requested to teach Bergen darker powers and of the Dark Side itself. Luke was troubled by this, as he knew the threat that Bergen would pose if he ever did turn to the dark side. To test Bergen, Luke had Brenge send him to Korriban, where there had long been rumors of another dark group building there. Brenge would send him there alone, as Luke was confident that Bergen would be able to defeat any dark-side adept he would meet. Brenge reluctantly accepted, for though he had faith in his former apprentice, his years had shown him that the most talented could fall to the Dark Side or to a blade.

[edit] Korriban mission

Bergen was at first, frightened by the dangers the mission had, but was reassured by Luke's confidence. He traveled in his personal N-17 fighter given to him by the Republic. As soon as he arrived, he could sense the dark powers that resided on the planet, both dead and alive. He landed near the entrance to one of the situated where he believed he felt the presence of other life-forms there. He got out and headed towards the entrance. Sure enough, he saw three guards with a dark force aura about them. He ambushed the unsuspecting guards and was able to slay the first with the element of surprise. The other two he astounded with his abilities and, though they were skilled as well, slayed the both of them. He contacted his R7 unit and ordered him to send a message to Luke that there were indeed dark-siders on the planet. He then entered the catacombs feeling the dark side around him.

He traveled through a maze of halls, careful to avoid any enemies, until he came upon a room with five dark-siders. Knowing that he would not be able to defeat them all at once, he applied his Force abilities. He grasped the mind of one of the weakest foes long enough to make him throw his lightsaber at another, cutting him in half. The other three instantly attacked the supposed traitor who had no idea what he had done, and soon had killed him. Bergen jumped out from his hiding place and attacked the three. He pushed one into a chasm and was able to cut a leg off of another enemy. He dueled the last one briefly before being able to overpower him. There were now two different paths he could take, and took the one where he heard voices in the distance. After a short hallway, he came upon two talented Dark-Side adepts and was forced to duel them both head on. The fight was arduous, but after a while, Bergen was able to defeat one of the two. However, the other quickly unleashed a quick shock of Force lightning which surprised Bergen and sent him flying into a wall. The Sith closed in, but Bergen Force pushed him away and threw his lightaber like a dart, impaling the Sith.

After the duel, he continued into a small chamber with a tomb, before it was a female dark-sider. They both stood on a narrow hallway, and Bergen immediately confronted her, demanding her surrender. She laughed at him and sent a bolt of lightning at him, Bergen easily blocked it with the Force, prepared for the attack. Impressed, she tried to seduce him to the dark side, which failed as Bergen was very determined and had become adept at arguing similar to his master. He defended the Jedi's side enough to make her realize that it was hopeless to try to convince him otherwise. She sensed his power and attempted to seduce him physically. However, Bergen was very immune to this and began to combat her, immediately gaining an advantage with his superior knowledge. The female Sith had allies though, in her own assistant who attacked Bergen from behind, giving him a scratch on his back. Bergen quickly recovered, though, and fought the both of them at once. During the battle, the female Sith demonstrated her ability to attack with lightning multiple times, Bergen was able to resist, as the lightning was relatively weak. With both talented Sith attacking him at once, Bergen was forced onto the defensive, and his defenses were rapidly waning. With a surge of energy he kicked out at the second Sith and cut the first on her right shoulder. Then, he reached out with his hand and sent furious bolts of blue energy at the both of them. sending the second into the chasm and the first onto the ground wheezing. Bergen was surprised at the power he had and that he had used such a dark power. But he returned to the mission as the exhausted female Sith got up and tried to combat him again, Bergen easily disarmed her. He threatened her with his saber and demanded to know who was in charge, she resisted, and Bergen lifted he into the air over the chasm. She taunted him for disobeying his Jedi ways. He began to lower her, and she pleaded for mercy and revealed information on the purpose of the dark side users and their leaders whereabouts. Bergen, satisfied, let her down and commanded her to leave. as he walked away, she grabbed her saber and prepared to throw it, but Bergen sensed danger and quickly pushed her back. She, being weak and having no resistance to attack, was flung off the hallway and into a pit beside it to her death.

After the fight, her words struck him. He had just seen his power in dark form. He could unleash deadly lightning bolts from his hand. He could control minds. He could lift people and throw them around with a flick of his wrist. He pondered briefly on his right to do such things, wondered why he could and others could not. He only though briefly before remembering his task at hand.

He continued down the path told to him by the deceased Sith and traveled through another series of hallways until he came upon a narrow bridge. On the bridge was a female Twi'lek brandishing two red sabers. Bergen instantly combated the Sith and the two dueled and Bergen was nearly overwhelmed by the Jar-Kai technique. But while under pressure, he unthinkingly let loose lightning that sent the Twi'lek flying back. Bergen lunged at her again and dueled her to a stalemate at which point she fled. Bergen continued on and eventually confronted two powerful dark-siders with double-edged lightsabers. It was difficult to fight the both of them at once, but what they had in melee power, they lacked in force ability. Bergen was able to exploit this weakness and was able to disarm the Sith, while forcing himself to not use any darker powers. After a long battle he was successful.

However, he then heard the hum of ignited lightsabers and a female voice screaming in a room above him. He quickly ran to investigate the sounds and sped up the stairs leading to a long hallways where three people stood. Three were holding red lightsabers; and one, a female, was holding a green saber. The presumed Jedi was being overpowered by the three Sith, but continued to fight back. Bergen immediately rushed to her aid as he disarmed one Sith with the Force and immediately began to duel a second. Both Jedi made quick work of their opponents, but by that time the third had regained his weapon and took the saber of his fallen comrade and attempted to duel both opponents at once. This was a futile attempt and the two Jedi easily defeated him. The female Jedi held her lightsaber in a defensive pose a as did Bergen, until he was able to see into her mind and learn her allegiance. He turned off his weapon, and she eventually was convinced that they were on the same sides. After brief conversation he learned that her name was Anin Donrel, and that she was an apprentice that had arrived on the planet with her master because of his signal to Luke. Her master had gone down a different path. They agreed that they should continue together instead of risking danger.

Instantly, an interesting relationship was formed between the two. Anin formed a competition with Bergen as she wished to prove to him that she did not need his help in the previous battle. Bergen eventually found himself attracted to her for a variety of reasons and wished to prove his skills. Either way, they rarely talked as they continued through the catacombs.

They eventually came to an area where the Dark Side aura was almost tangible, they knew they were close to something evil. But then they heard a loud growl. Silently, they came upon a long bridge over another chasm that led served as a perch to a rancor. Neither wanted to fight the rancor, but they had to pass and there was no other way, so they went to battle it. Only later did it occur to them that they could have used stealth. They both ran at the rancor and were able to cut it with their lightsabers. It quickly became enraged and pounded on the ground, sending them different directions. The rancor charge at Bergen, who jumped over the beast and landed behind it. The rancor then charged at Anin, who threw her lightsaber at it, only making it more angry. The rancor grabbed the girl and began to lift it towards its mouth. But Anin pulled her lightsaber back and hacked at the beast's arm, forcing it to drop her. Meanwhile, Bergen realized that their weapons were not doing much against the creature. So he developed a plan to trick it. While the beast was recovering from Anin's blows, Bergen threw his saber and rotated it continuously at the rancor's midsection, wounding it. The rancor immediately charged at Bergen, who back-flipped further from the monster across a broken part of the bridge, and used his saber to annoy the rancor. In a combination in animal rage and stupidity, the rancor charged Bergen again. Bergen smiled as the foolish beast fell through the gap and into an 80 foot deep pit and it ran at him.

Aninhad a wave of admiration for him briefly at his courage, but shook it off as they had to continue with the mission. They quickly healed themselves and continued across the bridge and into the next room where two other strong Dark Jedi stood vigil at a door. Both were armed with two ligthsabers and immediately assaulted the tired Jedi, who each confronted one. Each of the Jedi fought a hard battle, but in the end both triumphed over their opponents with a combination of saber skill and force ability.

But as the battle ended, they heard what sounded like a war cry and the hum of lightsabers. They turned and saw the Twi'lek Bergen had earlier faced off against. Using the element of surprise, the Sith attacked Anin, gravely wounding her. Bergen, enraged, drew his weapon and relentlessly used his skills of Form V to batter her defenses. With his anger fueling his attacks, he became a dangerous force. The Twi'lek tried to fight back, but Bergen was too fast and talented. With a powerful vertical slash, he cut the left side of her body off, killing her.

Their fight had lead the two into the next room, which turned out to be a large chamber with a monument over a tomb in the center. Though Bergen wished to go and help Anin, a shrill voice called out to him before he could turn back, and when he heard the voice, he knew that he could not leave. It was a female voice that called out his name, it managed to be high and menacing at the same time. He traced it to be in the center of the room and was somehow compelled to walk towards her. When he was close enough, she turned around. She looked demonic as her face was painted with different colors and her face had a ghastly expression. She addressed Bergen and admitted her surprise that he had managed to kill many of her warriors including her own apprentice. She told him that his life and quest would end here as he was no match for the power of the Dark Side she held, and she would not waste time tempting him with the Dark Side as she knew better than to do such. Bergen called her insane, but she cut into his talk and commanded him to spare her his meaningless talk. She drew her weapon and ignited the duel.

The two dueled with skill, the strange Sith was fueled by the Dark Side energy residing on the planet, and Bergen was tired of many duels. Soon, the Sith was able to gain the upper hand in the fight. But as things looked desperate, the vision of Anin lying wounded flashed in his head. With renewed determination he sent bolts of lightning at her, sending her backwards. He lashed out at her recklessly, briefly surprising her. But the Sith soon began to exploit the weaknesses of his reckless attacks. As she began to gain advantage again, and Bergen grew more and more tired. Bergen disengaged and began to breathe heavily and closed his eyes. He thought of Anin, of what would happen to her. But as he thought of her, he was reminded of the Jedi, of what he had done, and of what he was supposed to do. He opened his eyes, drew his lightsaber, and opened himself to the Force, letting it re-energize him. He entered the duel again, using his knowledge of saber combat to gain an advantage, he used is knowledge of the Force to keep him going. He fought brilliantly surprising his foe with his abilities. With his energy back, he was able to disarm the Sith. he held her at lightsaber point and offered to turn her in. But in a fit of insanity she yelled and impaled herself on his weapon. With his foe vanquished, he rushed back to Anin.

She was lying on the ground with a bad cut on her back, without consciousness. Bergen mustered all of his abilities and began to heal her the best he could. With much toil he was able to temporarily seal the wound, stop the pain, and help her regain consciousness. She was still weak, but Bergen helped her back to his ship, as all enemies had been defeated or were scattered and did not disturb them. When they returned to his ship, he brought out as many medical supplies that had been stored there. With those, she was able to return to medium strength. The both of them crammed into Bergen's fighter and they flew back to the place where Anin and her master had landed. Various other Jedi had come as well and separated to fish out and other dark-siders. Bergen stayed with Anin till they all returned, helping other Jedi that returned earlier to heal her cut, which they eventually. When all the Jedi were present, few had actually faced and Sith, Bergen left with them in his personal fighter and headed back to Yavin Four.

[edit] Continued Training

"After he returned from Korriban, he was a different person. He was wiser, stronger. He had come to know things that it took me a decade to fully understand."

-Brenge Solnon, describing his apprentice of Luke Skywalker

After Bergen returned from the mission, Luke expressed his astonishment that Bergen had completed the mission with such success. He offered to make Bergen a knight then, but Bergen declined, believing he still had things he could learn from his master. When Bergen finally returned to Brenge, he told his master of the different things he had experienced. The feel of the Dark Side, and the power it offered. But he continued to say that he had wondered where he stood to hold such power to control other people. Brenge was proud that he was on the verge of mastering responsibility with the Force and determined that Bergen was ready to learn of the Dark Side.

He began to each his apprentice dark powers he had learned when he was under the service of Emperor Palpatine. Bergen learned to master basic dark techniques such as lightning and grip. But also was taught like corrupt, crush, plague, and mind-affecting abilities. He also taught basics of Sith Spells. Those powers that he was not taught to do he was taught of, and how to prevent or fight them. However, to Brenge, knowing powers were not enough, he could sense the growing darkness inside of Bergen as he learned these new abilities, he struggled to control them.

During this time, Bergen grew friendships with Ramk Lermill, and later Anin Donrel. Bergen frequently practiced his saber abilities with him, and eventually they came to respect each other. This respect turned to friendship and they both became the most admired students in the academy. They were stereotyped to be arrogant (as they were at that period in their lives) by many masters and were therefore poor examples of trainees. However, many of them were forced to admit that the two were as talented as they claimed to be. Unknown to the masters, they were not as popular among their peers. Though they were considered talented, they did not fit in with others. They were admired and commended for their abilities, but somewhat rejected by others. It was unknown whether it was others or them, but a barrier was formed. Bergen and Ramk chose to study the history of the galaxy and practice their powers against each other, or play a game of holochess, while others chose to flock and socialize.

Anin did not forget Bergen, who had saved her on Korriban. What had once been her personal competition, turned to an admiration of the talented Jedi. Eventually, this formed into a kind of attraction towards Bergen. She befriended Ramk and Bergen, who welcomed and were surprised at the female company. The three of them formed a strong friendship that would reemerge later in life.

[edit] Test and Trials

Finally, Brenge decided that Bergen had learned all he could from him, and decided to give him a personal test. He called Bergen the sparring room one day, and ordered his apprentice to fight him. Bergen hesitantly drew his lightsaber and approached his master, expecting that it was a test to see whether or not he would attack. He was surprised when his master came at him with Vapaad style combat. Bergen defended the best he could against his master, but was soon driven back. As he began to lose, he was reminded of Korriban and was tempted to employ his dark side powers. He ignored his thoughts, however, convincing himself that he would never attack his master like that. He instead remembered his extensive lightsaber training and battled back his master with equal skill, yet failed to gain an advantage. Again, he knew he could use dark powers to distract or cause his master just a bit of pain, and allow him to win. He imagined the honor he would receive if he was able to defeat his master already. But again, he shrugged of those thoughts, knowing that this fight was not a competition, just a test of skills, he met his master at a stalemate. Then, Brenge sent a blast of Force Lightning at his apprentice, knocking him flat. Bergen was appaled that his master would cause him such pain during a test. He boiled with revenge and began to justify using the dark powers as his master had. But finally, he knew that it was simply irresponsible to use powers like that, and that his justification to do it because his master had was faulty. He reentered the duel with his master with improved concentration, and with an impressive Makashi based feint, disarmed his master. Brenge stopped fighting and applauded his apprentice. Congratulating him and saying farewell, as he informed his apprentice that he was more than ready for the trials.

Bergen soon took the trials and passed easily, impressing the masters. After he had completed the trials and became a Jedi Knight, Luke approached him with a holo-recording from Brenge. It contained a congratulations for passing the trials, a congratulations for being an already great man and Jedi, but also a warning. Though Bergen's master commended him for maintaining control under extreme circumstances, he also warned his apprentice that he foresaw tougher time in the future, and to make sure he treated all beings, no matter their alignment, with the same respect Bergen had treated his master with. He warned Bergen that the lure of the dark side is not something you can only face once and conquer, but rather an enemy that will continue to battle you throughout your life. He ended his message saying that he was proud to have known Bergen and hoped that the Force would allow them to meet again.

Luke immediately assigned Bergen to a mission to Manaan to settle a disturbance there. With caution, Bergen entered into his career as a Jedi Knight.

[edit] A Jedi Knight

As a Jedi Knight, Bergen would fight in the Yhuzzan Vong War and the Second Galactic Civil, and participate in various missions for the Jedi Order. He proved to be a talented diplomat and negotiator like his master, often settling many conflicts on planets before they escalated into a planetary war. During the wars, he emerged to be one of the greatest fighters in the Jedi Order, slaying many Yhuzzan Vong. He eventually was nearing the point of a master near the end of the Second Civil War. However, Daala was then elected as the new President of the Galactic Alliance.

During this time, it was discovered that his friends from Arthe were also Force Sensitive. Notanoj was eventually trained by Ramk.

On various missions, he met such people as Xam Nelduen, a pilot for the Galactic Alliance, and Ynto "Pickle" Hjelm'fey, a Bothan Smuggler. He worked with them on various missions, and both were fantastic pilots. He learned much from them and eventually practiced to become a very good pilot in his own respect. He felt that he would meet them later in life.

Bergen was a large fan of Galactic History and was annoyed how people in the galaxy were dumb enough to let history repeat itself during the Second Civil War. He further enraged when they elected the further Imperial Admiral Daala. Though he was not biased as she was a former imperial, he was biased because of her Jedi controlling views. He grew suspicious of how a once dreaded enemy could so easily be elected, and began to investigate the election.

After his secret observations, he was angered that he found no evidence of an unfair election, and that the people had elected Daala. As her reign continued, he grew to like her even less, as much of the blame for the galaxy's events fell on the Jedi, who had been the ones to save the Alliance. When she began to arrest Jedi, it was the final straw for Bergen. He had been nearing the rank of master, but left the Jedi Order as he felt it was worthless to be a master in an organization controlled by the government. He turned his lightsaber in and simply left.

[edit] Nerd Squadron

Bergen's leaving of the Jedi Order was followed by many, including Kyp Durron and Bergen's friends in the Order (Ramk, Notonaj, Efil, and Maichel) after Luke Skywalker exiled himself. Bergen had gone to Ilum, found another crystal, and built another lightsaber and began to travel the galaxy, doing good where he could.
