- "Do you see that small outcropping over there? Those are the ruins of Arrakeen, a very old Ophuchi settlement. Within those ruins is another cave with even more cryptic messages and symbols."
- —Sarus tells Annikin Skywalker about the ruins of Arrakeen in 22 BBY[src]
Arrakeen was an ancient Ophuchi settlement in the Dune Sea on Tatooine, near the sanctuary that housed the Ophuchi Clan. The settlement was a series of ruins by the time of the Invasion of Utapau in 22 BBY.[1] As of that same year, the ruins had a source of water above ground as well as some vegetation,[2] despite the two decade long drought that had overcome Tatooine in the years prior. Sarus, the leader of the Ophuchi Clan in 22 BBY, traveled to Arrakeen as a boy with his father, where Sarus learned about his destiny from then-Ophuchi leader Darius.[1]
[edit] Behind the scenes
The ruins of Arrakeen were first mentioned in the fan fiction novel Star Wars: Episode I - The Chosen One by author Brandon Rhea. The name of the ruins was chosen in reference to Arrakeen, the capital city of the planet Arrakis in Frank Herbert's novel Dune, as well as the resulting sequels.[2]
