Amne Selrieen Palpatine
The Star Wars wiki of fan invention.
Lady Amne Selrieen Palpatine was a figure of mystery. She was born twenty-two years before Chancellor Palpatine came to power and her death is presumed to be at some time following the rise of the Empire. As Palpatine's second and last wife, her death was never confirmed and her whereabouts are unknown, but she served as his First Lady for his entire tenure as Chancellor of the Republic. She was born a merchant's daughter, educated as a schoolteacher and by the age of 22 was the most recognized female human in the Republic. What is known is that at the time that Palpatine declared himself Emperor, his wife and only child had already gone missing. Speculations abounded that she had been captured by rebel factions, as had happened in the months before the Clone Wars, but the Rebel Alliance has strenuously denied all reports to that effect. It is therefore unclear if she is still alive or if her husband arranged for her disappearance. She was survived by her father, one of the provincial governors of Alderaan; and her sister Valeria, a noted Alderaanian composer famous for her Rebel sympathies. Amne’s story is contained in the epic Wife of Deceit by DarthIshtar on boards.theforce.net.

[edit] History
[edit] :Early life
- Amne Selrieen was born as the first child of Jos and Mila Selrieen in Crevasse City, Alderaan. Her father was a merchant who frequently made trips off-world and her mother dedicated herself to raising first Amne and then her sister Valeria, who arrived when Amne was eleven.
- Her father was born on Naboo and considered that to be his true home, so when the time came to give his firstborn a name, he chose one from Naboo.
[edit] :Adolescence
- "Amne had first met Cos Palpatine when she was still young enough to be going through the ‘awkward phase’ that had lasted much longer than her friends’. He had already made for a name for himself in Republic politics as a negotiator with what one holoshill described as a “manner so blunt that it might as well be a duracrete wall.” Her father, a Naboo by birth, an Alderaanian by choice and a nomadic merchant by trade, had taken a liking to the man who was unafraid to bluntly get the right thing done.
- '"For her part, Amne had been somewhat in awe of the man. In spite of the fact that he was nearly thirty years her senior, he was nonetheless a captivating and accessible man who treated all of those in her household with respect. It was not to say that he dealt with Vali other than to endure her perpetually sticky fingers and to avoid stepping on her, but unlike many of Father’s guests, he was kind to her." ~Wife of Deceit: In Love and Truth
- Amne cultivated a friendship with one of her father's friends, Cos Palpatine. He would come to the house when on diplomatic missions and was one of the first adults to treat her as an equal. He encouraged her interest in politics.
- Three years after their first meeting, he sponsored her application to the University of the Republic on Coruscant. She was accepted and chose to pursue studies in political science and teaching. She was frequently invited to the Naboo Consulate or Senate sessions and began a more profound friendship with the Senator from Naboo. During this time, her father was appointed as Ambassador through his political connections.
- Upon completing her studies, she was offered a teaching position at a private academy on Coruscant. She accepted the position and was scheduled to begin in the fall as their new Social Studies instructor.
[edit] :Wife of Deceit, Book 1: In Love and Truth (The Phantom Menace era)
- "My father told me something once. It was when I had just been made a Senatorial aide and was about to begin a long life of association with the extremely powerful. He said, ‘Court the noble in spirit as you would a beautiful woman for you may someday want them to lead you. Court a beautiful woman as you would a noble spirit, because more often than not she will be one and you will one day want her to guide your children.’" ~Cos Palpatine, Wife of Deceit: In Love and Truth
- Amne returned to Alderaan for a last summer at home before beginning her teaching career. During this summer, Senator Palpatine approached her parents on the matter of a mutually advantageous marriage. In spite of the 29-year age difference, Amne felt strongly enough about their friendship to accept the arrangement. He formalized the engagement at her family's home.
- Upon returning to Coruscant, the future Lady Palpatine was moved into the Naboo Consulate. Scandal attended their engagement, since most journalists looked with suspicion upon their relationship. They continued to court each other in spite of public disapproval and set the wedding date for late in the Fall. During this time, Amne finally realized her love for the man she was to marry. She also began cultivating a friendship with Senator Bail Organa, the newly-elected representative from her homeworld of Alderaan.
- Their engagement period was marred by conflict. There was, of course, the attack of the media as well as one unnamed assailant who went after Amne herself. On the other hand, Palpatine was caught up in the events that led to the Trade Federation's occupation of Naboo. The former conflict led to Amne leaving the Consulate until the time of the wedding and being assigned bodyguards.
- The wedding was an elaborate affair, held on Coruscant. Immediately following the reception, Senator and Lady Palpatine left for a honeymoon to Chandrila. While there, however, he received word that his world had been blockaded by the Trade Federation. They returned early so that he could handle the emerging crisis and act as his world's advocate in the Senate.
- By Cos' request, she was in attendance at the Senate session where Queen Amidala made her plea on Naboo's behalf. Amne was horrified by the apathy of the Republic's leadership, but suspicion of her husband's hand in the vote of no confidence. When Senator Fang Zar offered his nomination to Palpatine, she supported the nomination on the principle that he would champion justice and bring an end to the current conflict.
- Three days later, they had just been informed that Senator Palpatine had won the race for Chancellor when word came from Naboo that the Trade Federation had been vanquished. The Chancellor and his First Lady traveled to Naboo almost immediately to help with the reparations and to honor the sacrifices of his people.
- At this time, Amne was assigned two Jedi as temporary protectors. Master Amia Sahur and Padawan Zia-Ri Marakesh were asked by the Council to spend the first week of the new Chancellor's term evaluating the security and establishing a good relationship between the Jedi and the new leader of the Republic.
- It was on Naboo that Amne met Padme Amidala for the first time. Amne and Cos returned to Coruscant immediately after the victory celebration.
[edit] :Wife of Deceit: Taken For Granted (Attack of the Clones era)
- Dooku straightened up with all the bravado of a towering thunderhead. “Chancellor,” he growled, “we will not long be a handful of systems and there is no question that is not the interests of a few that we have in mind. We established the Confederacy in order to rescue the systems which you and your Republic have so negligently and casually cast aside. You may scoff at our efforts at this moment, but you will soon wish that you had been more mindful of our demands.”
- Cos waited for nearly a minute before speaking again. In that time, Dooku did not yield or even settle down a little, but that infamous Jedi patience at least prohibited him from insulting the Chancellor further. At least the Neimoidian was appropriately silent this time.
- Amne, for her part, had agreed to not speak unless she was directly involved in the conversation. It was not that she had nothing to contribute, but this was not her battle to fight. She was simply here so that she could advise him later.
- “I casually cast nothing aside,” Cos said at last, his voice low and dangerous. “Go back to your...allies and tell them that we are willing to hear their grievances. As I said before, we are quite interested in welcoming back the dissenters and we are fully committed to reconciling our differences. If you deign to threaten myself or the Republic which I lead again, I will extend far more than a hand of friendship.” ~Palpatine and Dooku, Wife of Deceit: Taken for Granted
- Ten years into their marriage, all was seemingly well. Palpatine had been reelected as Chancellor of the Republic by one of the largest margins in history and his wife was four months into her first pregnancy with twin sons.
- The Separatist crisis came to the forefront at this time, proving to be the most divisive issue of their marriage thus far. Palpatine firmly maintained that he only intended to pursue diplomatic ventures and all of his meetings with Separatist leadership supported that claim. Bail Organa, a member of the Loyalist Committee and friend of the First Lady, brought it to her attention that Palpatine was covertly making preparations for the eventuality of war.
- Amne, outraged, challenged her husband to refute the claims. He insisted that it was his duty to prepare for all contingencies and that he had no interest in going to war. She believed him conditionally, but several days later, Palpatine supported a vote on the Military Creation Act. When questioned on her reaction to that, Amne expressed confidence that Palpatine would realign his priorities and pursue peace again.
- She returned to the Chancery Mansion to find that her husband was waiting for her. He struck her across the face for having opposed him publicly and having made him look as if not even his wife believed in his intentions. She refused to speak to him for the next three days until they finally reconciled.
- Less than a week later, she was bound for a conference on Corellia when several of her guards turned traitor and took her hostage.
Here ends the canon information that has already been released. This page will be edited as more is revealed.
[edit] :Future
- Nothing is clearly known at this point about how Lady Palpatine met her end. In the prologue of each book, we are given a glimpse into her eventual fate. Book 1 begins with her 'exit interview,' which is to precede her execution. Book 2's prologue is set earlier in time and describes how she was tortured for information by repeatedly freezing her in carbonite and then bringing her back from the brink of death.
- In Dogs of War, Bail Organa speaks with Thane Selrieen, Amne's father. It is noted in the narrative that the Thane had no love for the Empire because his eldest daughter disappeared during the transition from Republic to Empire.
- Amne's sister, Vali, is a notable composer from Alderaan who was off-world when the destruction happened. At the time, she was working on her Symphony No. 4, "V'lAmnias". "V'lAmnias" is Taiald for "to the unforgotten," but it is believed that the choice of wording is an intentional tribute to her lost sister.

[edit] Behind the Scenes
- On July 19, 2008, Amne won "Best Original Character, Female" in TheForce.Net's yearly fanfiction awards.
- The character was inspired by the West Wing fictional character Abby Bartlet, when the author wondered what sort of First Lady Palpatine might have had.
- In this case, the image came before the character. DarthIshtar was looking for a regal-looking redhead and found the image used above. Amne's initial characterization was based entirely off of the author's perceptions of that image.
