Ethanol

An ethanol molecule

Alcohol referred to any number of beverages brewed throughout the galaxy that contained varying levels of ethanol (C2H5OH). A being who would routinely drink to excess to the point that the behavior would disrupt their day-to-day functioning was called an alcoholic. To become intoxicated was termed as "being drunk."

Alcohol was usually made through distillation, brewing, and/or fermentation and could be produced using a variety of ingredients, from various grains to fruits and berries, and in unusual cases, solid rock and bacteria aided by a certain type of planetary atmosphere. Some beverages would ferment during storage and thus become alcoholic. Some types of alcohol were aged in specialized casks in order to produce a specific level of quality. Distilled alcoholic drinks were sometimes referred to as hard liquor. Types of alcoholic beverages included, but were not limited to, ale, beer, bourbon, brandy, champagne, cider, gin, liqueur, liquor, malt, mead, rum, tequila, vodka, whiskey, and wine.

The liver, if that species possessed one, was one of the primary organs for processing alcohol, however, excessive alcohol consumption could damage it. While in a being's bloodstream, the drinks could have an effect on that being's cognitive and behavioral functioning, depending on how that particular being processed the alcohol. The symptoms of intoxication included:

  • Slowed reaction time and weakened motor skills
  • Lowered inhibitions, which could lead to sexual violence
  • Impaired cognitive abilities, such as memory and concentration
  • Slurred speech
  • Increased confidence
  • A false sense of warmth

Excessive amounts of alcohol, which was dependent on species, could also cause a being to lose consciousness. Various species would process alcohol differently, and thus would be affected in other ways. For example, Devaronians and Zeltrons possessed two livers, and thus could process higher amounts of alcohol. Alcohol would often provoke a depressed mood in Gands.

After a being's body processed the alcohol, usually overnight, a being could suffer a temporary condition called a "hangover." Symptoms of a hangover included headache, nausea, dehydration, and sensitivity to light and sound. The severity of the hangover was usually proportionate to the amount of alcohol that the being had consumed prior, though some species would have long hangovers despite the amount.
