The Abandoned Sith Temple was a building on Coruscant that had served as a place of religious dark side worship for members of the Third Sith Empire during the Great Sovereign Crusades when the Sith controlled the planet. After the Galactic Republic took back control of the planet and forced a weakened Sith Order back to Korriban at the end of the war, the building remained standing, as it had been originally converted from a large office building and the Republic intended to restore it.
The Jedi Order, however, did not agree with restoring it as they believed the taint of the dark side was too strong, so they recommended destroying it. The Coruscanti officials could not come to a decision and the building was eventually forgotten about. After thousands of years, the few square kilometers around the building became abandoned, which contributed to the building’s loss from public and political memory.
By the time of the Invasion of Utapau, the abandoned temple had become a meeting place for the Order of the Sith Lords. After he survived his duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi on Utapau, Darth Maul met with the Dark Lord in the temple for instructions on the war that had erupted on Utapau only days earlier.
